The reason why the npc despawn I think is because the depths aren’t connected to the overworld. The chasms are just portals wich you can travel trough but npcs can’t.

With Calyban, I believe she cooks for you once a day or every so often and the results may vary. I also discovered that you can shoot the canon Barta is stationed at and keep getting her into trouble. Certain NPCs can be forced onto a platform if you glue them together under them. Other NPCs are permanently tethered to the ground in the code and can't be picked up in this way. Even further, some NPCs like Purah can be picked up but only if they are in a moving state (like when Purah moves under the awning when it rains)
