What happens if you unplug Component Video cables?

Component Video uses 3 RCA connectors colored red, blue and green. You may be forgiven for thinking that these carry red, blue and green color signals, however this is not the case. The green connector (Y) carries the luminance signal, the red connector (Pr) carries the red deviation from the luminance and the blue connector (Pb) carries the blue deviation from the luminance.

You would see more interesting results if you tried this out on an old CRT tv, the lcd is converting it to digital and giving an error when you do something completely wrong, but the older crts don't have digital logic to check if they are getting a valid signal (besides some of the later HD sets and 100 hz sets in PAL regions) and would try to display the signal even when you had no luma signal. You would most likely get a red and/or blue image that distorts and moves erratically across the screen without the green/y/luma cable connected because that one also carries sync data telling the tv how quickly to sweep the beam across the screen and when to go to the next line

The cables are intended to be used to carry a composite video signal and stereo audio, but they are just electrical cables and can be used to carry any signal. I once used an audio cable with 2 of those connectors to carry the composite video and audio signals from my NES to my TV.

What if you connect composit video cables into component?
@Odswietny
@Odswietny 7 ай бұрын
1:25 The delicate lines you see on the screen when you touch the end of the Pb/Pr cable of Component Video are likely caused by interference or signal degradation. Component video cables transmit analog signals, and any disturbance or interference introduced into the cable can manifest as artifacts on the screen. When you touch the cable, you might be introducing electromagnetic interference or disrupting the signal flow, leading to those lines appearing on the screen.

All text from the .txt file. "Component Video uses 3 RCA connectors colored red, blue and green. You may be forgiven for thinking that these carry red, blue and green color signals, however this is not the case. The green connector (Y) carries the luminance signal, the red connector (Pr) carries the red deviation from the luminance and the blue connector (Pb) carries the blue deviation from the luminance. I don't have any Component Video cables, so I am going to use Composite Video cables instead which have the same connectors but are different colors. I am going to use red for red, white for blue and yellow for green. When all 3 Component Video cables are plugged in correctly, the colors on the TV look normal. If I unplug both the color cables and leave only the luminance cable connected, the TV goes grayscale. This is what happens if I plug in Pb but not Pr. This is what happens if I plug in Pr but not Pb. If I touch the end of the color cables, it makes faint colored horizontal lines come up across the grayscale image. If I touch Pr the lines are red and cyan, if I touch Pb the lines are blue and yellow. What happens if I plug the color cables in the wrong way round? Blue turns red and red turns blue, green stays green. What happens if I unplug the luminance cable but leave the color cables plugged in? The TV says 'No Signal'. This is what happens if I plug the luminance cable into the Composite Video port and leave the color cables plugged into the correct ports. This is what happens if I have the luminance cable plugged into the Composite Video port and unplug the color cables. What happens if I plug the luminance cable into one of the color ports? The TV says 'Mode Not Supported'. This is what happens if I plug the color cables into the Composite Video port while the luminance cable is plugged into the correct port. This is what happens if I plug the color cables into the luminance port while the luminance cable is plugged into the Composite Video port. What happens if I plug the color cables into the audio ports while the luminance cable is plugged into the correct port? Nothing while in the menu because there is no audio. If I switch to live TV which has audio, there are colourful horizontal lines across the grayscale image."
