I was a motorcycle tech and service manager at a couple of multi-line dealerships in the Houston area between 1992-2005 and can tell you that the worst damage from hurricane storm surge is when the salt water gets into the frame through the steering head and swing arm mounts, it starts to cause rust to form within a couple of hours after being taken out of the salt water. Next to that is when the salt water gets into the engine or oil tank, oil is lighter than water so most of it floats out and it instantly causes bearing rollers and cranks to rust. The fuel tanks take a serious hit too. If you can't get everything washed down with fresh water and dried out with alcohol immediately you're screwed. Even PWC's along the Gulf Coast need flushing as soon as they come out of salt water, that stuff is the worst.

I'D THINK A COMPLETE REBUILD IS THE ONLY WAY BUT IS IT WORTH IT ? WHAT DO YOU THINK ? I'D LIKE 2 KNOW
@thedogsbutler70462 ай бұрын
@@dwayneglover914 You can fully rebuild it (including cylinder re-sleeving/fresh valve seats), re-wire it, and it's not at all worth it. Even if you can afford to spend twice the value of the bike to save it, it's still not worth the time it takes to do the rebuild. All of the cast aluminum in the video will be covered in a white powder in a month or two, that white powder is aluminum corrosion. Cast aluminum is porous and salt water penetrates those pores, that corrosion affects the structural integrity of the aluminum.

Most likely the bank or ins. company sends them to auction like co-part. These bikes are better than a bike in a crash. Sometimes wiring harness and flushing the hell outa the motor along with your time and these bikes can be restored

i dont think you understand salt water vs steel/copper/aluminum/iron/plastic/paint
@cableguy6843Ай бұрын
@maddog7999 no understand it just fine, I'm not saying all can be saved but some can. I've seen cars restored after flood and a bikes wiring is not as complicated. Sometimes people luck out and if the bikes engine was on the proper stroke no water would get in ,wouldn't you agree? These bikes are not submerged for years.

Soon after Milton, I saw in a video where the water was at their front door so I'm sure they received water damage. Nothing on their web page but they did make some statements on their Facebook page. One big difference for North Carolina is that they are dealing with fresh water, not the salt water storm surge shown in this video.

It's sad to see... but thankful that the people were able to see another day. The bikes come and go. On the bright side, someone who does their own work may be able to pick one of those bikes up and do something special with it. When I saw that trike, I said that's the one. If I could get my hands on that, it would become a tribute bike at the end of the day. Already did a tricked out Sportster for the 'Battle of Mogadishu'.

Ya know in watching this very sad story at the lose of those bikes ,it made me wonder being that every one knew it was a comin ,would it have saved them if the owners had gotten large bags and i know dealers might have them as the bikes are covered in a bag or plastic cover when they are crated,so if one was to cover it in one of these bags then swaddle the bike in it tape its tight, then wrap it in more plastic several times ,basically cocoon it in plastic , i mean i saw a video of gas stations warping the pumps in plastic to protect the electronics ,so why not give it a go, basically put it in a bubble ,i know i would have given it a shot with my 2 babys.

They put them in a container and ship them to Lithuania, Europe like all wrecked HDs. In Lithuania they ‘repair’ the bike or make one bike out of two or three. They put the ODO back and ship it to other European countries as good bikes without a salvage history. This is a very disturbing thing. Every 1HD bike is trash in Europe and even European dealers do not trade in 1HD bikes… go figure

Most insurance companies are no longer selling flood salvaged vehicles period. There was a lawsuit that happened recently and so now they are no, so sorry, so sad. Don't care if its a project and you give all kinds of documentations of not responsible. It will be all insurance companies by 2025. Thank those that bought a KNOWN flood vehicle and sued because electronics were bad or a battery went bad on it. Ruined it for everyone else because some flood vehicles aren't bad bad and can be saved. Especially if not on a coast line and its just fresh water. But alas....
