I once went to a wedding where one of the guest’s was blind and had a guide dog. Dog acted EXACTLY like Mr. Maple in and out of the harness. In the harness, 100% business (although I noticed him side eyeing the steak the waiters brought out), and made himself discreet by hiding under the table while his handler ate. There was a big open field at the country club where the reception was with a seating area outdoors. She (the handler) went outside with the rest of us, sat in a chair with a glass of wine, and released him from the harness. And he immediately ran towards the kids playing tag, wanting to meet everyone, play with them, just be absolutely adorable. When it was time to go, she called his name, he spent maybe 10 seconds letting himself get pet goodbye, then walked back and got back in his harness and was back to work.

Back when I was in college, I knew a girl who was totally blind, and had a guide dog. I was genuinely curious about whether or not the dog, a very adorable golden retriever, knew the difference between working or not, so she demonstrated, and that cute little golden boi immediately laid on the floor and asked for a belly rub. Of course I obliged. I got to pet him for around two minutes, then it was back to work, and the change from not working, to working, was instant. Golden retrievers are such great dogs.

When my daughter was young, we were walking through a mall with my aunt. My daughter excitedly says "oh look! A dog! " It was a service dog, and I doubted my aunt knew not pet it, so I said to my daughter "see the harness? He's working, so we won't disturb him". My kid is like "I know" and my aunt is like "wow, I didn't know that". The lady heard and came over, and explained that the dog is off duty when it's harness is off, and took it off so we all got to pet the dog. It was a great learning opportunity. It was so sweet of the lady to do that. Obviously, I would never expect that, and would never ask to pet a service dog. Not everyone wants to talk to a child or anyone for that matter, and I'm sure this lady didn't have time to do that every time someone saw the dog.

I'm not certain how the ADA compatible association works in the UK, but in the US, it is possible for folks with autism to get a dog as a support animal. Maybe you can look into that! Dogs are great for helping people fell more calm, diminish anxiety, and much, much more.
@merkinidgit10 ай бұрын
@@amyralls6218To be allowed the access of a guide dog/service animal the dog has to fulfill a specific function for the handler that the handler cannot do for themselves. There are legally-protected psychiatric service animals but they are not emotional support animals, which do not have legal protections in the US. PSAs can recognize and alert the handler to early escalation of emotions before undesired behaviors occur for example. If the autism is accompanied by emotional dysregulation, a seizure disorder, or certain cardiac issues, the person might benefit from a service animal. Certain diabetic people also might benefit from a hypoglycemia alert dog. But we don’t need more ESAs making life difficult for people with functional limitations who require a service dog. Imagine literally relying on your animal to save your life but instead having an untrained dog distract and threaten your “life-line”.

I love seeing this. My parents and I helped train and socialise guide dog puppies (their first year is socialising and basic training from volunteers that have the pups for about a year, then they go into kennels for more in depth training with guide dogs). Only one of our 6 failed, as she had multiple ear infections during her training. She went through everything but had to be pulled out because of that and having skin irritation flare ups. We kept that one, but it’s lovely to see the other side when they are with their blind owners. It was so hard to give the puppies back but seeing this makes the heartache worthwhile. two others went to be brood bitches, and the other 3 girls passed with flying colours.

Currently im a volunteer for a foundation for guide dogs and assistance for kids with ASD. And I can confirm that they know when they’re working or not, they are a whole different dogs with their “Uniform”. Of course there are some things that they can’t do but just as Paul say they are just like another puppy. And I’m pretty sure that one of the reasons and its a really important thing is that we as volunteers we treat them in a kinda different way when they are working or not, and the world around does to. I mean that they know that with them uniform other people cannot touch or distract them but when he is not working, this can be done. (For those who might not know, the first year it called Socialize, and its period of time of 12/15 months when the dogs go everywhere to get use to and once they go to their future user can be comfortable with the environment that is surrounds them.) Sometimes we have dogs exchanges so they can adapt to new routines. For example im a med student and I go to the gym but I don’t work, in the next exchange it’s probable that “my dog” goes to a volunteer that has an office job.l

@MatthewandPaulOfficial10 ай бұрын
Paul here to answer this one! I prefer that people can see it. I will sometimes use my white cane for something very simple like walking from my chair at Starbucks to the counter with the napkins which might be just 2 feet away.... in those cases I don't actually NEED the cane for that distance, but I use it as a signal to others that I am visually impaired. That way, if I get to the counter and can't find the napkins RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME (which is often the case), someone is more likely to help me. So that's one example of how using a white cane is helpful in unexpected ways!
