On one hand the person who says that is supporting the idea that because it's of the past it should not matter, on the other hand apparently they consider that it matters enough to need to hide it. However lie detectors *are* very difficult to beat, it takes a lot of training and willpower to actually beat one -- while this still isn't good enough for it to be used in some thing like criminal justice, it is good enough for something like this.
