I don't believe Ivanchuk managed a plus score versus Kasparov. However, Boris Gulko did achieve this. Kramnik would also have been close. Depends how one determines which were Kasparov's prime years and, I suppose, whether one takes account of games played at non-classical time controls.

The way I see it, he can't make a significant counterattack down 2 pawns and with his Queen and Rook tied down like that. Also, he's not going to lose much rating against Magnus.

@@mikeg2538not even close to a tie. Magnus is up two pawns with a past pawn and and really strong knight outpost. The evaluation shows it and at this level it’s an easy conversion for a win for Magnus.

Do players get to choose or bring their own pieces? It would appear that some of the black pieces are a bit smaller. Check out the size of the pawn spheres at the top. The rooks of each color also appear different…or is this some illusion?🧐

I'm a newbie chess player and my answer might be wrong, cmiiw. They're thinking hard, predicting opponents next move and thinking what they're going do about it. They basically have this imagination match in their heads. And the hand to support their head gives a little comfort I think. And it's to keep tradition alive why they write down their moves. Ofc they digitally record their games.

Impossible to remember each move of each game, although players like Magnus have excellent recollection. They wrote the moves to keep a record of the game so it can be preserved and studied by everyone.

As you get older, I think you realize putting a lot of time in the chess is not worthwhile. I have found that reading and working out are much more satisfying. Just my opinion.
