Disclaimer: I don't own any part of this video, it's a piece from a Netflix Original called Midnight Mass.
Just particularly loved this conversation, as it reflected my beliefs one to one.
Thanks to Zoe for transcribing it in the comments below as follows:
"Myself. My self. That's the problem. That's the whole problem with the whole thing. That word: self. That's not the word. That's not right, that isn't ... That isn't. How did I forget that? When did I forget that?
The body stops a cell at a time but the brain keeps firing those neurons, little lightning bolts like fireworks inside and I thought I'd despair, or feel afraid, but I don't feel any of that, none of it because I'm too busy. I'm too busy in this moment, remembering.
Of course. I remember that every atom in my body was forged in a star. This matter, this body is mostly just empty space after all and solid matter? It's just energy vibrating very slowly and there is no Me. There never was. The electrons of my body mingle and dance with the electrons of the ground below me and the air I'm no longer breathing, and I remember there is no point where any of that ends and I begin. I remember I am energy, not memory, not self. My name, my personality, my choices all came after me. I was before them and I will be after and everything else is pictures picked up along the way. Fleeting little dreamlits printed on the tissue of my dying brain, and I am the lightning that jumps between. I am the energy firing the neurons and I am returning. Just by remembering, I'm returning home. It's like a drop of water falling back into the ocean of which it has always been a part. All things a part. All of us a part. You, me, my mother and my father, everyone who has ever been, every plant, every animal, every atom, every star, every galaxy. All of it. More galaxies in the universe than grains of sand on the beach and that's what we're talking about when we say God. The One. The Cosmos and its infinite dreams. We are the cosmos dreaming of itself. It's simply a dream that I think is my life, every time. But I'll forget this. I always do. I always forget my dreams.
But now, in this split second, in the moment I remember, the instant I remember I comprehend everything at once: there is no time, there is no death, life is a dream. It's a wish made again and again and again and again and again and again and on into eternity. And I am all of it. I am everything, I am all.
I am that I am."

We’re all made of the same subatomic particles as everything else. As with all the life forms which were made of preceding lifeforms, we’re made of preceding lifeforms… and one day we’ll make up other lifeforms. Chemical and quantum reactions doing what they’ve always done… and will always do. In a sense we’ve always existed and will always exist. The dream which thought it was real. “We live in a universe whose conditions are right to make molecular machines such you and I.” And “We’re made of star stuff. I grew up in a Christian cult that told me I would be resurrected after I died, they said it would happen so quick you wouldn't even know you died. I left the cult 3 years ago and since I've struggled very hard with my concept of death especially recently. When I got to this part of the show, I cried my eyes out and anytime I think of this monologue I cry again. It's brought me peace. Instead of imagine my bloated corpse serving no purpose, missing out on life and leaving my loved ones, I now feel like I'll be going home. I won't serve a purpose, because I am that purpose, I am everything.

Indeed it is a great monologue, It is a soothing, warm and welcome idea of what it is to die, to fade back into energy ..... the energy in which we thrive and in which we became aware . The same energy from the stars where we all came from. To go ' back' into it, to make it whole again.

It's hard to find people that assimilate life, death and purpose in the same way as I do not only because I'm surrounded by a religious family but because it is just hard to find people that are logical and that find beauty in the cosmos and what we are as human beings. So much blur, fanatism and uneducated hateful people fuled by social media and prejudice that it seems worthless to express oneself.... And then comes this gem of a series. What a masterpiece. The hole thing. But specially this monologue. What a beautiful, peacefull, logical poem. I am obsessed with her delivery and I completely relate. So good. "We are the cosmos dreaming of itself"

3-4 years ago I would have probably scoffed at this, thinking I knew all the answers. After stumbling onto the path of Buddhist/Hindu philosophy, this resonates so much with me. It's spiritual beyond words, realizing we are in this cosmos, we are of this cosmos, and most importantly, we are the Cosmos. It's easy to forget and think of ourselves as separate from everything else. But the moment we come back to realizing that everything is one and connected, there's a sense of elation and goosebumps. It's always a pleasant surprise to encounter little gems like these ♥️

We are energy, no this physical body. We are part of the universe and life is a constant repetition. Although, I know the real me didn’t want to come back, why we have to come back? Maybe because we are energy flowing around, we find a pregnant mommy who caught our energy. When humans understand what we really are, this planet would become a better home to live .

The Hindus, Buddhists, Toltecs and other cultures were aware of this truth and have shared it and taught it for 1000s of years. But this monologue hits so deeply. I have had experiences with psychedelics and even deep meditation that were exactly the words she spoke. On the one hand it helped me to appreciate this experience and puts me right in the moment and every little happening is noticed, with no need to be "doing" anything or be anywhere else but where I am. While on the other hand it makes it challenging to be in this world with the societal structures that are in place. With all the ignorance, hatred and war, mostly over material things and ideologies. If this truth went to everyone's core, nobody would be fighting over anything anymore. Not over land and resources. Not over money. Not over religious and political ideologies. Rather than the shared nightmare it has become. It would be a shared dream and a beautiful one.

My cat was losing his battle with cancer while I watched this series in bed with him. This whole series was extremely cathartic for me during a truly desperate time. My cat passed shortly afterwords and I have to come back to this periodically to feel connected to him, that moment and our lives together. A beautifully written and preformed monologue. A series that handled grief so perfectly in its perfectly messy reality. I’ll love you forever Ragetti.

I have friends and relatives, both Catholics and Christians that would watch this and not get it or relate to it at all and they would think it was offensive and sacrilegious. They couldn't even begin to comprehend or consider the deepness of this, much like some of the characters in the series. The dogma is so ingrained in them, whereas this explanation is so much richer, rewarding, and satisfying than anything I could ever get from a bible or a sermon. It's comforting on so many levels, this version of the eternal.

It’s so interesting you bring this up! I was literally thinking the same thing. When I go to mass Erin’s monologue always brushes my mind. It really is a deep speech and personally as a Catholic I feel like it resonates so much even though the church and others would say otherwise.

I’ve done DMT a bunch, and I’m not saying it’s like dying, but the whole “remembering” this is 100000000% similar. “ Wait….I’ve been here before. I was just dreaming before waking back up here….what was I dreaming about? I can’t remember (my name, identity, anything). Doesn’t matter. It’s nice to be back. I can’t believe that I couldn’t communicate with shapes, warmth, and colors in that other life….speaking seems so primitive. How did I forget that this was real, and ‘that’ was just something I dreamt? I can’t remember your names because I’ve been dreaming so long, but I remember you, and heard you cheer when I woke up here….” This speech instantly made me think of getting a grrrrreat, giant rrrip and waking up from this dream.

Only you are right, only your views and only your religion. Do you see a problem with that line of thinking? No, you probably do not, because your way is the only way because after all, YOU do know. YOU know it, YOU feel it, YOU'VE read it, YOU believe it, YOU could not possibly be wrong.

@Northern Wolf I am very familiar with Dawkin(s), Chris Hitchens and many other atheists. Just because you found god doesn't mean anything. It's just you. Constantly throwing bible verses out and calling people liars is never a way to convert or convince people. Just because you found it doesn't make it true, it never will. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I don't go with what feels good. I read it, didn't change my view at all. All of this talk of fear yet you say love. Just more of the contradictions bible believers always make excuses for and twist to fit the lords mysterious ways. No accountability whatsoever. The bible just another way to control people and tell them how to live and what to think. I am not buying it. I am smarter than that, but hey if you believe it, that's a good thing for you, just don't spew all that out to other people and condemn them and call them names for not believing that sounds awfully arrogant to me and that is a human emotion, not one that should be godlike.

I have had so much pent-up emotion from grief over the last few years, and I've realized I never allowed myself to feel my pain. They say, you just got to keep fighting, and put on your best face. I’m not religious but this one monologue had me in tears. Hearing this speech instantly brings me back to rehab. We were told to find a ‘power greater than yourself’. I kept searching for a God. Someone who could hear me. Hear my prayers. This speech reminds me of when I found out that my own higher power is just…everything. We don’t know what happened before we lived, so why be scared when we die? Great show, great concept.

If anyone is interested, the explanation Erin gives in Midnight Mass is similar to gnostic/hermetic cosmology (and many other emanationist and ancient belief systems). If you liked the messages from the show, you should check them out. They are surprisingly both simple and complicated, but will likely resonate with most people, regardless of religious or atheist. What is more interesting is why they aren't more popular. And what is popular, in their stead. Who are the Father Paul's and Bev's of our world? We've gone through many forms of government, societal development, religious doctrines, etc. Could there be Father Paul's and Bev's for all of them? Have you become their followers without even realizing it? What about the supernatural element? The demon? The 'special blood?' No one believed until they saw for themselves. Would that be too late? The hand washing allegory the doctor made was very relevant. We believe we are certain about the extent of XYZ, but we are limited to Earth and a few hundred years of real scientific advancement. There's a lesson there too. What else could there be that we "can't see" but is still very real?

At the time of his death, to hear him say "I did my best" and he sees Tara-Beth whole - I was in tears! Grown man... I suppose Lisa's line at the end makes us think that the Angel is dead. If we go by modern lore about such things.

I love this. I am a radical individualist when it comes to how I wish to be treated by others on this planet, but I am such precisely because I know that each one of us is the whole of the ... universe? ... cosmos? ... pluriverse? (my prefered term) ... for ourselves ... Each one of us is "the cosmos dreaming itself". And no god is necessary for this, not any "laws", not even natural "laws", only the dreaming and its habits which can change at any time. And, yes, "I am all of it. I am everything. I am all." And in this moment, I am me, me as eyes, ears, skin, tongue, nose, brain to take in all the beauty, all the wonder, and, yes, all the horror, all the pain, that is life and love and being ...

The most beautiful part about this monologue is that it’s just simply the truth. Some people may listen to this and think it’s cheesy or cliche, but they don’t realise that this is the reality that we all face. So us being here in the comments and being totally obsessed with this… that’s as real as it gets. And it sucks that some people don’t resonate with it because the irony of it all is that… they do whether they want to or not.
