I think the reason why we like to go to sleep late is because our day is so busy that sleeping is like ending your free time. So we stay up as late as we can and end up not getting enough sleep.

I've actually witnessed how dreams begin a few times. The best way I can describe it is that my brain falls in some sort of subconscious state where I'm imaging these *thoughts* or *images* (like random shapes or whatever) as if I was going through my memories and it all seems normal and natural whilst I'm falling asleep. However, I've had this process interrupted a few times where I've *snapped out of it* and instantaneously forgot what I was seeing and couldn't remember what it was in the same way as we can never remember the beginning of our dreams. I am convinced that this is how everyone's dreams formulate

Yet research shows later morning starts for teenagers and later end of day aids concentration and focus and the reverse is for junior kids where early starts work better and early finishes. So lets start school at almost the same time as every adult needs to start work. I wonder if any country would consider changes to work days and school hours depending on Winter-Summer. Since living near the equator means similar daylight/night hours- does sleep research show it works better as citizens are seeing darkness and daylight at the same time

Yeah I think that's what happens to me too! and then sometimes during that in between stage, I'll "wake up" or just become fully aware of my surroundings again. And it's weird, because when that happens I immediately feel lighter, not physically, but it feels like some sort of invisible weight has been lifted off of me. not sleeping for a second for more than 2 or 3 days have strange effects on your mind and body, unexplainable things you can feel, is like your in the 4th dimension spiritually....... but it is difficult to sleep normally when you are already very old maybe this is the reason all people are going to die...... i wonder what is like if people doesn't sleep and yet they are all healthy and their body and brain will heal automatically. the brain has the power and function to recall or remember so we have to sleep to put our brain and body do the job. thank you to "the economist" for sharing this informative video.

No human can go without sleep or a very small amount. Those who work all night as you say either die early, suffer long term health issues or end up unable to concentrate during the day. It looks like competition but its not really, its presenteeism. Even those who do night shifts are shown to suffer long term health and brain "damage", even if they are in theory getting 8hrs sleep in the day.

I am 68 y.o. I have never slept more than 4 or 5 hours a night my whole life. I am in great shape. One reason maybe because I learned, at a very early age, to control my dreams. As a small child I suffered from terribly, horribly bad dreams. My mother would yell at me for screaming in the night and tell me to stop screaming and waking her up. I started to play the dream over in my mind. Asking, how do I change it? What can I do to stop it from scaring me? How can I be my own hero? As I lay there thinking what to do, I would fall asleep again and then change the dream. It took several weeks or months before I could control my dreams without waking up, but I can still do it even today.

i believe when we dream that our minds drift off into memories, situations that our mind wants us to see or reanalyse also for example, when you have a dream which effects you emotionally it seems to me the mind is saying basically look at how you react to things that dont matter or arent even real which then gives you insight in waking life

There was actually a time where when I was in the middle of sleeping I had a dream but not just any ordinary dream it's called lucid dreams it's where I think you move around your dreams I witnessed it and it felt amazing lol it felt like I was in another dimension and world but I kept on waking up cuz I felt like it was in the real world (my dream) so I kept waking up and sleeping and everytime I go back to sleep my dream resumes and I move around freely again. It was the best experience I ever had ever it happened when I was 5 or 6 or 7

Anyone ever had a bout of sleep paralysis during a day nap? I was riding in the back of a car with some friends and apparently fell asleep but immediately woke up only to find myself paralyzed. I freaked out because I couldn't feel myself breathing and felt like I was dying-which of course was just a panic attack. I remember my eyes were open too but that was all I could move. When it wore off (within about 20 seconds) I took a huge breath and everyone turned around with a confused look haha.

I have. It's extremely terrifying, especially when you're alone. I usually try to yell out for help but my voice is never heard. I usually only get that when I'm extremely tired and have bad dreams which makes it worse since my eyes are the only thing I can move and I have to force them open to avoid falling asleep again. No one else in my family has apparently had it either which concerns me since my parents think I'm crazy when I describe it lol
