Measuring the swingweight is equivalent to measuring the inertia of an object. inertia is weight multiplied by distance to the point of rotation. If you put an overgrip on the handle of the racquet, you add weight, but the distance is very small, therefore the swingweight does not have to change. greetings from Chile.

Indeed, the machine actually grips about 10 cm up the racket handle, in the middle of the overgrip, so there will be just as much weight added above the pivot as below.

It’s not surprising that the swing weight do not change. It’s physics. Let me clarify: 1. Swingweight depends on moments, or what we usually call in car terms, “Torque”, it is the force about a pivot. 2. Since your machine is holding it at the pivot, any force that is on the pivot will not affect the torque. The further the force is from the pivot, the higher the Torque 3. Torque is calculated by force x “distance to pivot”. Therefore adding 1g at the 12oclock is the same as 5-8g just at the handle, because it’s further from the pivot 4. In reality, we hold our tennis racket at the handle and swing it, so our overgrip will be completely on the pivot (our hands is the pivot). Therefore, there WILL BE NO SWING WEIGHT CHANGE. 5. For calculation purpose, it’s 6gx0cm to the pivot, so 6x0=0 So yes, the grip changes your balance and overall static weight, but it have no effect on your swing weight. You have tested this for the leather grip too.

Absolutely. Indeed I would guess that they design the SW pivot to grip at about the typical point of the top of a hand, so they are giving you a reading that corresponds to what you'll feel. They could have designed the pivot grip just to hold the tip, or hold the entire 20 cm of the handle area, but that would not correspond to an average feeling (unless you're considering a Nadal FH, or 2HBH). What is interesting is to consider what SW really is. Is it the actual feeling of swinging the racket? Or is that better a combination of SW, static weight and balance? For example, does it feel the same swinging a 340g racket with 330 SW, as swinging a 310g racket with 330 SW? I think to quantify the feeling of the racket you have to calculate something like SW/Static Weight x Balance Point, because if a racket has a high SW and high BP it feels much more hefty than one that is very head-light with the same SW. Overall I would say balance has the greatest feeling difference, in the typical ranges one finds, and that is where getting a stock racket that is on spec is very important too.

Very useful vid - thanks for posting! Assuming a 68.6cm (27 in) racket and the numbers provided, I get the following: Base racket: mass=315.5g, bal=32.8cm, SW=314, distance from SW pivot point to balance point (call it "y")=22.8cm, recoil weight=150, polarization=0.48, MGR/I=20.7. Racket with overgrip: mass=321.5g, bal=32.4, SW=314, y=22.4, recoil weight = 152.7, polarization = 0.47, MGR/I=20.8. So while it's minor, the recoil weight (which fights against rotation recoil at contact) goes up, despite the balance moving down. As such, weight in the handle gives a bit of extra weight overall, leaves the sw effectively unchanged, and with the higher recoil weight provides a bit of additional stability at contact. This stability, while perhaps small, contributes to a minor increase in power (since power is lost in recoil), comfort and control. As an aside, while I've never been fully sold on the MGR/I calculation seen in many forums, when I tune my personal rackets, I do tend to land pretty close to 21.

But what did you learn here? That your racket's weight and balance changes when you put weight on one end? I really hope you already knew that. What we should come away from this video knowing is whether this is good or bad in general, or if it even makes a difference. The swing weight was identical, so will a rec player even notice the difference, will it have any impact on their game at all? Maybe it can improve your game for some players by possibly increasing control. Without actual on court data none of this means anything.

I believe that the swingweight is measured 10 cm from the end of the grip. Even in the machine used, we can see that the pivot point is not at the end of the grip but some cms ahead of it. So most of the overgrips' mass goes below that point. Maybe that's the reason why the swingweight didn't change (or didn't change enough)

Great analysis Harry. How about seeing if you can replicate the specs of a stock racket by taking a light version and modifying it following the difference in specs? For example, take a PS97L (290g) and add about 17g to the handle area (leather grip / overgrip / butt-weight etc), and about 8g to the hoop (say 3g at 9 & 3, 2g at 6), then see if it feels like a PS97. The 8g in the hoop should add about 11pts SW, and the net 9g in the handle area should reduce the balance by about 0.7cm / 3pts. I sometimes wonder if the difference in racket models is thicker amounts of graphite, or if the manufacturers just use the same hairpin and wrap a few bits of lead to get to the different models.

The swing weight didn’t change on that machine because of the way that machine measures. The center pivot point of the machine is almost at the midpoint of the handle. So adding weight below that point will be a counterbalance lowering the SW (for that machine not the true theoretical SW). weight above the pivot will increase the SW per that machine. The center of mass of that overgrip on the handle is just barely above the pivot point and apparently wasn’t enough to change the SW reading.

Putting weight in the handle doesn't significantly change the racquet weight forward of the fulcrum point of the swing weight machine. That machine is analyzing the energy required to swing the racquet mass in front of the fulcrum point. That is why you don't see a change in swing weight. All you have done is changed the balance which gives you a different sensation because it is now more head light. but you are still moving the same amount of mass in front of your hand's grip.

try adding 15g to your racket. get some #16 rubber bands and tie them to your racket. it should take about 20 bands for 15g. as Harry says, as rackets get heavier, weight is added towards the grip and not the head. it's hard to tell what you may gain from more weight because there are variables like where you prefer to add the weight or maybe your preferred balance is not preferred at a heavier weight. anecdotal, but i recently moved up about 30g to a heavier racket and i felt more power and stability in my serve. less pain in my serves because i was swinging too hard with the lighter racket. much more stability and comfort in my groundstrokes. i'm barely 3.0 so i'm no expert. also, i'm sure there is a max and min threshhold for everyone. i went from 10 oz to 11 oz so i'm in the middle.

Does it assist the average club player? Jury's still out on that one. Maybe it helps 4.5 and above where they swing the racquet faster, but doubtful with players under that skill level.

Almost if not completely irrelevant. With or without after 30 minutes of playing weight will change do to absorption of perspiration. Most players 4.5 or under will not be affected above that level players usually play with a heavier racket. Just minuta.

Balance swing weight what does this all mean??
@chuckfriebe8433 жыл бұрын
Swing weight is two things 1) the way the racquet feels when you "swing" it and 2) the inertia that is exerted upon the ball when actual contact is made with the ball. What also affects this inertia is how fast you swing as well. So the swing weight provides resistance to the inertia of the moving tennis ball. You may hear the players at a Tennis Warehouse review refer to the "plow through". This is to what they are referring.

@mfmukhtar7863 жыл бұрын
Adding grips, or even overgrips doesn't add anything to the swingweight because you are essentially adding the same mass to both sides of the pivot point. This guy literally did a video a while back where he switched out the normal grip with a leather grip (leather grips are on average 10 g heavier) and found no swingweight change. He was surprised back then too. I'm surprised he forgot haha

End of the day, it’s up to Harry how he wants to present his stuff in the videos. I prefer traditional units, but learned over time to be equally comfortable with metric. It’s just arithmetic and hardly difficult.

@miguelbarahona66363 жыл бұрын
I think it´s easier for racket customization, to work with grams. Adding 5 grams is the same as adding 0,176 oz of lead, but I prefer measuring 5 grams. Metric system is very easy and logic.
@paulgowler518110 ай бұрын
So basically it makes almost no difference. At the rec level I bet not a single player could feel that difference, especially since the swing weight is identical. I bet even pro baseline players would find it difficult to tell thr difference. Probably only feel players who volley and dropshot a lot could tell the difference. If you make a video like this, you need to be results-oriented. It doesnt matter how much the numbers change unless it has a noticeable effect on the court. Otherwise this is a bit of a pointless video. If you want to know how to do a test, go watch some Essential Tennis videos. For example, the video that Ian did on comparing different types of balls, he didn't just say, oh this one is extra duty so A will happen, this one has a cheap, thin latex so B will happen. He got two players in to blind test them and give live feedback about how the balls felt off the racket, how lively they were off the court, how easy kr difficult it was to generate pace or spin, what the impact was on the wrist, elbow and shoulder. I just think the video was a bit of a waste of time because we didnt learn anything of value. If tour goal is just to get views and thus get paid, fine, but if your goal is to inform and educate you audience I really think you need to focus more on the end result, ideally with a blind test
