That method - or at least the traditional suicide mortise and tenon joint it is based on - the point of failure is the wood. So the joint is as strong as the wood itself. It's nice to see modern takes on old methods, but you really want to think twice or thrice before applying this one. Having a permanent joint means zero repairability. It also can potentially be a point of failure. Most wood joints are designed to allow for seasonal expansion/contraction. Do this to every single joint on your project and there is a chance the expansion could be restricted to a point the the wood starts splitting... particularly if softer/fresher timbers are used.

This technique is used in woodworking with mortice and tenons, you taper the mortice slightly to allow the tenon to spread. The advantage to using the wedge is control over the direction of force on the mortice piece so it won't split. With the screw because it's round it puts force out in all directions which is why the wood split. Once a mortice and tenon is put together you'll never get it apart again.

Same principle as the wedge in fitting a hammer head. With dowels, I would put the glue in the hole first. If you put it around the side of the dowel, it will always get pushed back out. With glue in first, only the excess gets pushed out.

As long as you are going against the grain your ok , go with the gain and you will compromise and split the wood you are trying to repair , nice tip , music & video !

Have you ever seen Japanese blind dovetails? They’re a similar idea, applied to mortise and tenon joints. Many piano lyres use wedged round tenons, but the other side is exposed, unlike these blind holes.

I like this idea. Also if you like, you can poke a small and shallow hole in the end of the dowel, and use a small carpet-nail or finishing-nail or toothpick instead of a wedge 👍

Dowels don’t really need to be hard to extract, do they? I thought the purpose of them was to contain the lateral load between two pieces of wood. I do like your solution of adding a wedge, but why?

This is using a dowel as a faster. Plenty of applications, stool legs, floating tenon, you can head the dowel and use it as a nail. Centuries old technique.

@@kibukun There are actually times that this isn't a great idea. Wood species brittleness and grain orientation need to be considered. Where this is appropriate, it is quite strong. There really is no "need" for glue, but it makes things much faster and easier.

Just drill a smaller hole or a bigger pin and hammer it in... literally the same thing but the entire pin is secured not just the bottom...

Для свежего отверстия под шкант, конечно, но при ремонте мебели, когда старое отверстие разболтано, отличный метод! Можно использовать стандартный шкант, а не делать вручную чуть больший или рассверливать под больший стандартный диаметр шканта.

if would be interesting if this was possible to both sides, so the rod could be used to join 2 parts together without glue, but it will splinter.. glue at least in one end I suppouse.

I think it's too complicated for practical use, but still interesting to experiment with. The 10 mm hole seemed too big or the dowels were too thin. Usually you should have a friction fit that is so tight, that you have difficulties getting it out again even without glue.

This works just like the Jigoku Kusabi joint used in Japan. The major difference is that the hole for jigoku kusabi is a different shape, larger inside than the mouth of the hole, so when the peg splits it is locked in place and cannot be removed.

Creo que funcionaria con cuñas de madera de alta densidad y los clavos internos en forma de cono solo así creo que funcionaria, también a la tabla base con un punzón media caña sería bueno hacerle algo de espacio de diferencia almenos de un milímetro o dos en el fondo de la base para permitir un poco la expansión del chazo de madera

But the edge spreading effect is only occurring at the furthest end when pushing it in. It doesn't hold up to any force pulling it out at which time the edge would be inclined to shrink as you pull. The only reason it's creating holding force while in the hole is because you're expanding it to fill the hole you initially drilled too big. Lol. Drilling holes small enough that you need to mallet the dowel into (plus glue) will give you the correct hold and without splintering and compromising the dowel. Those broken dowels might appear to be holding a straight pull but now try bending the spline - you've broken your dowels into toothpicks.

Ну в целом прикольно. Я изготавливаю мебель без использования металлических крепежей. Всё на столярные соединения. Встал вопрос как ручку к дверце прикрепить. Просто паз и туда её было не комфортно. Просто на клею - не наш метод. Тоже тогда догадался до внутреннего расклина. Лучше любого шурупа держит. Хз какой смысл так на счёт шканта заморачиваться. Он ведь позиционный в первую очередь. Площадь склейки кромки будет много сильнее шканта.. Ну и чтобы не было трещин нужно отверстие просверлить в шканте. Тогда трещина на дырке и закончится.

Лучший самый бережный результат даст, сверление отверстия под саморез 2-2,2 мм и затем ввернуть саморез, можно смазать мылом или густой смазкой типа Циатим.

I am from a little village, and as long as I know we used wood as an anchor for concrete or silicate brick walls. And recently, I did the same with foam brick wall. What we do: drill a hole, put there a stick, and drive a screw in that wood. Holds really hard.

before plastic coats, it was common used wood for driving screws into concrete/stone. In Poland I find it in old houses, but it's still very useful if you know this trick

@@komentattor good for antiquity house repairs. Than also you can stright use squared pegs to rouned close sized holes. As I I think some old houses made by the first settlers used that methoid. For the wood pegs.

before commercially available sleeve anchors or tapcon screws were available, drilling for dowels and nailing into them was standard procedure for fastening to masonry or cement. I don't know if anyone deliberately wedged the dowels this way, but considering how axes are hung i wouldn't be surprised

Not sure about that. You have to split the wooden anchor to do it, which makes it more fragile. With glue you should not need this complicated way I think

The dowel with wedge is in alot of older quality furniture. Bonds well without the need for glue and lasts for ever potentially. Well until the rung breaks.
