Adding lead tape changes the feel depending where lead tape is placed. Better to drill a hole in the hosel and stuff , poly stuffing (cushion filling). The poly stuffing spreads out evenly within the club head cavity. ie doesnt significantly change the COG of the clubhead as lead tape or 'melt' does

Just came across your stuff on KZbin. Enjoyed the video about frequency of the driver after cutting it down. Would you share where I could get a frequency machine like yours??

Hi Ryan another great video. Not to repeat the first comment on this thread but adding to it; Does Rifle use the CPM or Frequency measurement when they categorize their shafts (e.g.; 6.0, etc..) And how much of a change in frequency is needed to go up or down one flex? Thanks again!
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
There are lots of factors, but overall each full flex is designated by a number, but I would say each flex if roughly 1.5-2 frequency points each. Ive even built some clubs that are for players at very low speeds that are negative frequency.

What you think, order a shorter shaft - 9 grams heavier (that equals 1 point) so that's less tape you'll have to add to the head. And order one with a heavier tip And stiffer at the tip. Oh boy...then you can add tungsten weights or powder mixed with glue into the shaft tip. Then add lead tape to the sole or top or where ever you want to adjust the cog !

So what would you do to avoid this if you had to cut it down? Cut from the tip section to maintain, combo of both?
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
As explained above you would have to tip trim to maintain the flex. This is why building from scratch rather than changing an existing club allows you to dial in every variable. Is this noticeable for most golfers, probably not to be completely honest. BUT it does explain why some players would notice a difference after doing this to a club.

Great video. I keep on learning. My question is; what does the difference in frequency do to the driver and how it performs (ball flight, trajectory, spin rates)?
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
Most believe that softer typically equates to higher flight and more spin but thats not really the case since there are WAY too many factors in a players swing - delivery, tempo, attack, that can alter the final numbers.

I’ve always wondered if the length of the person swinging make a difference? In other words a golfer 5,7” should have a different swing then a golfer 6’4” in terms of club angle and speed. Is there are measurable difference or are all golfers the same?

I got fit for a Callaway Mavrik. I always choke down on my drivers for control. I want to order it cut down an inch from Callaway. Will Callaway adjust the frequency and swing weight to what it would be at the standard length?

I'm confused. CPM and frequency are typically used interchangeably. In the chart, both lengths have a 270 CPM but different frequencies. How's the frequency number calculated and what's different?
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
The length is part of the calculation and factors into the formula- in this case shorter means softer
@maxnewman9395
@maxnewman9395 5 жыл бұрын
@@ryanbarath1916 That might be part of their frequency calculation, but that doesn't mean that it performs differently. That calculated frequency doesn't have a well defined connection to anything real (feel, spin, etc). If you want to provide some context, test the results on a launch monitor at two different frequencies. I'd wager that because this shaft has the same cpm at the 2 different swing weight matched lengths it will actually feel very similar... Besides the obvious difference in length.

@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the shaft but if head weight is adjusted to keep swing weight where it was before being cut down, you would probably need to tip between .5 - .75"

If i decide to do this to my driver, how would i tell the club fitter what to do? I guess its different between each fitter and their experiences. Would the driver feel/swing different when you cut it down? Thanks Ryan! Love all your videos, keep it up!
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
To maintain the same frequency of the shaft you would have to pull it, tip it and then get to final length by cutting it. Its a long process vs just cutting it down. It also depends on the shafts and if you want to keep the swing weight the same or not, but this is just one example of how changing one variable on a club can have more effects than many people would assume.

So what would the frequency b elf you didn’t add all the 12 grams to the head?
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
its was roughly 7 cpms higher but that it at a calculated swing weight of around C7, which would keep the frequency close to the original value. But for the player the clubs would feel a lot lighter.

Today I got a new driver and cut off the grip and cut it down to be 42.5 after I regripped it. The new grip I put on it though is a mid size grip so it obviously weighs more then a standard. Could I potentially be fine with the swing balance given that the new grip could be making up the lost weight from the 3 inches I cut off?
@billjones8542

Hey Ryan, I recently had my smoke 6.5 70g chopped down to play 44 inches. It seems to be really stiff now. Would it be a better idea to have started with a 6.0 flex given that it has stiffened up the shaft as much as it has?
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
Andrew Smith if you add weight back to the head to get it to the pre-cut swing weight then it should feel much closer to what it was flex wise

Hey ye the club builder mentioned this, the only option was to hot melt which I didn’t want to do as it was permanent. If I put a lighter grip on will that add flex?
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
Andrew Smith i would suggest trying lead tape to get an idea if you like the weight back in the head before hotmelt. Using a lighter grip is just tricking the scale since the club head isn’t getting any heavier

Did the shorter driver shaft become STIFFER or MORE FLEXIBLE?
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
more flexible because of the mass added to the head to maintain swing weight

Very interesting. I just bought a cobra f6 4-5 wood baffler which comes with a 20 gram and 2 gram head weight and switched out the 2 gram for another 20 gram. I am going to cut the shaft 2.75 inches. If the club started at D3 with a stiff shaft, and I add enough lead tape to make the swing weight D3 after the shaft reduction, based on your video the shaft will play more flexible. Instead, can I add slightly less lead tape to have the club play at D0 to maintain the stiffness?
@ryanbarath1916
@ryanbarath1916 5 жыл бұрын
@@shaunm80 As soon as you ad mass to the head, if you don't tip the shaft than it will play softer. The easiest way to think about this would be if you added the extra 18g by swapping out the weight but instead of cutting down the club - you just choke down the 2.75" instead. Its a lot of mass to add without tipping to keep flex BUT it could end up being a real winner either way. This is why a fitting is so important when finding shaft flex,. Thanks for the question.

@@ryanbarath1916 Instead of tipping the shaft, what if you added some mass under the grip? Say one of those grip-end counterweights or a poor man's weight in the upper shaft - a cork with a fishing weight (I don't have all your equipment)?
