We showed you our first use of Split-Fire's Wood Chipper behind the Summit TX25. That's a 25HP tractor. Today we have it connected to our 73HP Kubota M4d-071. We want to see if it chips any differently and we're looking to find it's maximum diameter. Is it the 3.5" listed on the machine, or can we go bigger?! Watch the video to find out how it fared.

The max diameter is going to be dependent on how hard the wood is (... shush). It might take a 5" pine just fine, but stall out on a 3.5" hickory. And whether it's dead standing wood or green wood will also make a difference. Lastly, at some point the infeed plate itself is going to be the limiting factor.
@GoodWorksTractors

Haha, yeah well they still do give it a max rating. But, all fair points for sure!

The one major flaw I see with this design is the chute position. First of all it is stationary. Second it throws to the rear. Other chippers I have seen allows the user to rotate where he wants the chips to go. Huge plus! A stationary chute is fine in a large open area. But when you are in a tight situation where you cannot move the chipper to the position you want it is a big minus. A rotating chute solves all of these problems. Nice chipper. But not the best design. IMO.

I will NEVER again operate a wood chipper that does not have a power feed mechanism. The safety issues around having to push or drop wood into a self-feeding chipper have given me nightmares. I have seen wood get sucked by machines, and that wood has has broken limbs that have snag people causing injuries. I have also seen wood kick back out of self feeding machines and hit people. A power feeding machine is not perfect but the benefits include a reverse feed control to manually prevent it overloading the tractor. I cannot recall if we have a Land Pride or Woods. Please stay safe.

Quick tip jack knife the UTV to the trailer b4 chipping that rear screen looks like a great target for a chunk of wood or even nail or stone embedded in the wood if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all so wouldn't take the chance

It also makes a HUGE difference what type of wood your chipping. My drum chipper on the back of my L5240 (~50hp) can easily take much larger juniper or black willow than live oak. Probably 2-2.5x as big and still feed well. It also makes a difference how large the chute is near the blade. That's a physical barrier. All that said, that looks like a nice chipper.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Жыл бұрын

Super fun video Courtney! The additional height of the blocking makes a huge difference on it's ability to fill the trailer better. Green wood typically chips easier than dry wood. Occasionally you have to let the smoke out of stuff like this...might need to upgrade to a wide cog tooth timing belt. Sometimes you have to push the limits to see where the true boundaries lie.

@hotgore

Chipping is much easier to deal with than burning, unless you have a massive pile of large wood. Not having to deal with a big smoking pile that you have to push up all the time, worry if it is too wet to burn or wild fire danger is really nice. For smaller stuff it is less time to chip it vs burning for me.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Жыл бұрын
I agree, I burn a decent amount too. It is annoying to watch the wind, watch the pile, make sure it's out when it needs to be out, not burn down the woods, etc. But, also works well sometimes.

There should be a pto stop switch on the rear fender of the tractor. When seconds count the off switch in the cab is too far away…
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would be fancy, but probably a cost that most tractor mfg's think wouldn't be utiltiied enough. The chipper does have a switch built in...you just need to wire it into your tractor. I'll do that once I decide which tractor I'll run it on normally.

@@GoodWorksTractors this is where all tractor manufacturers should standardize on a wiring harness extension to the rear of the tractor to hook up remote kill switches. So that no mater what brand of attachment or tractor, you could connect it up. They were able to standardize on the 540pto shaft, this should be easy enough.

@@GoodWorksTractors Folks I want to take just a second to tell you about our channel sponsor, Rim Guard. They're a liquid ballast solution they line up with exactly what we do here on Good Works which is talk about tractors and tractor safety. We see it as simple as this: if you own a tractor you need Rim Guard. In fact some tractors include it as standard out of the factory. Liquid ballast is simply weight. Alright? And this weight hides inside your tires. It stays there all the time. It's a safety concern because tractors are almost always too light and too tippy out of the factory. The #1 attachment used by every tractor owner is the front end loader. So when you pick up something heavy on the front end the back end wants to pick up off the ground. Rim Guard liquid ballast helps keep your back end planted to the ground. But beyond safety it's going to help maintain traction because if those rear tires, those power driving tires are on the ground, you have traction to go where you need to. You're going to operate more efficiently. Because if those rear tires aren't on the ground, you're not going to pick up as much as you need to or take it where you need to go. Rim Guard is all natural. That means it's safe, it is the heaviest all natural product on the market. It's not going to freeze, it's not going to corrode and it's available at over 1,000 dealers nationwide To find a dealer visit rimguardsolutions.com to make your tractor safer today.

At 7:02 you reached inside to try and remove your wood, That's a huge NO NO! Just shut down the machine so nothing is moving. I would hate to see or hear that you or somebody got hurt. That machine pulls those trees in fast and it only takes a quick second to get sucked in from the branch catching loose clothing or even your gloves. Please be safe everyone.

Neah, my hands are literally "feet" away from where the action happens. It's a visual trick. If the hopper were 10' tall, you'd still get people that say the same thing vs if it's 4' tall or 1' tall. It's all about how far away you are from the blades. Use common sense, that's what I do :)
@jeffbihlman6687
@jeffbihlman6687 Жыл бұрын
I cringed as well when he reached in. Even thinking about gloves or sleeves getting snagged on some of the cut off branch bits sticking out, very easy to catch on to clothing and pull you in. Seems like the E-Stop would be best located on top of the hopper just in case you need a last second way to kill the PTO. If you're chipping by yourself and getting pulled in, you aren't reaching the E-stop where it was shown. Looks like an awesome machine though. Chipper plus their log splitter would be nice to have, appreciate you Courtney testing both of those out recently!
