I'm a scientist myself and knowing that sometimes, unfortunately, testing on animals has to occur is one of those things I have to live with. Morality in the sciences and the ethics of science, especially in biology, is one of those thorny issues you just... kinda have to face with science. I love animals and would never needlessly place an animal in pain, but sometimes it's the lesser of two evils. If there really is no other way to make sure something is safe and people's lives are saved, then to me it's a necessary evil. But if there's a better option, then there's no need for it. Cosmetic testing on animals, for example, is a needless thing when we can literally test for things we know are dangerous with other options. Something like a vaccine or medicine though, is acceptable as long as the animal lives an okay life otherwise. Like how surgeons have to do harm in order to heal you, sometimes in order to learn you have to do harm to another creature. It's why we have laws and ethics codes.

I work in medical device design, and so for me animal testing is a necessary evil to make sure anything the doctor puts in your body won't have a horrendously bad reaction. However, there are alternate tests being developed that could take the place of some of these animal based tests. Seeing the history of the pregnancy test makes me even more hopeful!
