The thing about most of his key moves leading to HKDs is that when he was much worse, it was clear that he struggled to access his win condition. As the devs started giving him more ways to access his win condition, he felt better and better. Backdashing on wakeup used to be really effective against Pot because most of his moves would soft knockdown instead and send you full screen which was bad for him.

So my opinion, should grapplers be top tier?: Well ideally Grapplers should have the opportunity to be as playable a play-style as Speedsters and Zoner. They definitely should NOT be bottom 1 I think the reason grapplers are so hated is because rushdown is a popular and universally loved play-style for the most part. The basic design philosophy of grapplers is that they have poor mobility to make up for their damage, health, and pressure. And when it comes to rushdown vs grappler, well poor mobility isn’t such an issue when your opponent wants to come to you Though I’d argue that complaining about Zangief being top tier in street fighter 6 is absurd since Ken, Rashid, Cammy, etc, all essentially become Zangief in the corner, thanks to throw loops. And since Gief has worse mobility and corner carry than those guys, he’s the least of your problems. Meanwhile, Manon and Lily are still in the gutter paying for the sins that the aforementioned 3 get to get away with for free.

When a big body, Zangief-style (big normals, huge grab range, very slow, etc.) grappler is top tier, it's *usually* because they have some absolutely absurd reward *or* something unrelated to their grab game that makes them busted. AC Pot, for instance, has unblockable loops. UNIEL 1.0 Wald had a timerscam infinite. DBFZ 1.0 let A16 end any combo in a HKD and into a 4-way mixup and doesn't actually move any differently from other characters. Normal big body grappler things are rarely what push one to top tier.

A big part of the issue is the small stage. The same way more health lets grapplers make more mistakeson defense, more screen space allows other characters to make more mistakes in neutral. Tager and Waldstein arguably have better fullscreen options than Pot but the larger stage means they can't immediately capitalize on them from fullscreen. Even when they work they you'll usually have a bit of wiggle room. Unless you were already pretty close to the corner you can still escape to your preferred spacing after a lost interaction or two. Lose two interactions against Pot and you're probably cornered or dead.

The case with grappler is that they NEED the psychological help after certain skill level. Because people won't commit mistakes freely. At certain level, if a grappler is top tier, a good grappler player (know how to make good mix-ups, use the fear factor and has a good neutral) will give you the feeling that is fucking strong. But... That is something that happen with ANY top tier character. The only one difference I see is that people only see "One move, a lot of damage" and automatically is spamming that the character is unfair. Same happen with zoners. Zoners need to stay calm, know how to act, how to keep you at distance and make you lost the patience. But people just think "LMAO noob is spamming and winning against me character is fucking unfair". Sadly, that part of the community is the loudest one and therefore the one with most visibility. Do you wanna know that grapplers are ACTUALLY strong and almost unfair. Goro Daimon, specially in KoF 98. And King in Tekken 8, that mate is literally broken because grabs in that feel weird.

I think the problem with that is, since grapplers are typically high-health & high-damage characters, the risk reward is instantly skewed heavily in their favour. If, even with that innate strength, a grappler has an objectively good tool-kit, gets rewarded with system mechanics (passive meter gain) and has their weaknesses slowly eroded (bad against zoning and bad mobility).. well, then we're at a point in time where playing against one feels like a soulslike boss, except a human gets to pilot them. I'm not saying Pots and Giefs don't deserve to have good tools, but archetypes are meant to have weaknesses so maybe don't overdo it. If Axl doesn't get to have shmix and pressure, why does Pot get to have an armoured, full-screen HKD into his win-conditon?

This is exactly it. People don't like polarized matchups because they don't want to play a _matchup_. They want to play their character the way they always do. Zoners and grapplers force you to interact with their game plan or lose. That means playing differently, and little timmy twitter doesn't want to do that. He wants to be able to run at his opponent and press all his favorite buttons and win, whether that opponent has an armored command grab or not. When he runs into the specific part of the screen that the grappler risk/reward kills you for existing in and dies, it's not his fault for being there. The grappler is simply unfair.

Dude im sitting in my bed thinking about a bunch of random shit and suddenly the most clear epiphany popped up in my head its something ive known for a while but never vocalized but like dude. I hate grapplers. Straight up. I play as a grappler character in games and im like "wow this is so easy i get all this damage for free." Its a spit to the face. You spend all that time learning combos n shit but grapplers dont gotta do any of that... they get a shortcut... they get training wheels... i watched a video of tournament Guilty Gear and saw a Potemkin destroy another high level player...and i felt angry... it doesnt make any sense... i dont know either of these people, but the second I saw Potemkin get selected I instantly was rooting for the other guy. No respect for these characters. Its heartbreaking. Potemkin, Zangief, Tager... all frauds. The only respectable grapplers are Bullet and Alex... everyone else... pathetic... id rather fight 100 Slayers before allowing a single Potemkin to disgrace my screen with his presence. I cant believe I used to look up to these characters. Before I picked up the controller I mistakenly believed that grapplers were the underdogs... the ones that had to work harder then everyone else. What a sick joke. This mass delusion that grapplers are "bad" disgusts me to my core, moreso than the actual characters themselves. This belief is so normalized that even grapplers themselves believe it, making them all the more disgraceful. Its disgusting, i'd pity them if I could even consider them worthy of any emotion other than repugnance.
