What happens when you open an "uncirculated" box of pennies from the bank?

The easiest way to determine if there are any copper pennies in a roll is to spend $17 on a gram scale that measures to 2 decimal places. Carefully open a roll of all new pennies. Then weigh them WITH the wrapper. Typically an N.F. String roll of fresh, new pennies will weigh between 127.1 and 127.7 grams because they are all zinc and each penny weighs 2.50 grams. But if there is even 1 copper penny in the roll it will weigh more than 127.9 grams because the copper pennies weigh 3.11 grams. I have found this method surprisingly accurate in determining if a roll is made of all new pennies without opening it. You may find your rolls of new pennies are off from what I have found by a gram due to the wrapper. So do a few tests before you open a roll to find what the typical weight of an all zinc roll of pennies is in your box. Then if you find a roll that is an entire gram over, there is at least 1 copper penny in the roll and the heavier it is, the more it will have.

Circulated coins most likely end up in uncirculated rolls when they switch from rolling circulated coins and don't clear all of the coins from the machine before loading the hopper with uncirculated coins. Another possibility is someone tossing some circulated coins into the hopper when running rolls of uncirculated.

It may sound weird, but a Lego Separater tool,, has really helped me open my rolls up. It's quick and no damage to coins or myself after hundreds of boxes..

Yes they are depending on the coin if it's in proof or mint condition they tend to go for more. Look for the ones with good leaves and letters, look closely at the numbers and letters for double die press impressions. You find wheat pennies with errors and if you get them graded by pgs and there is where you get your coins appraised. It costs money to make money but after it's graded it's ready to sell to the closest bidder or you can set you own price without grading it then you take a chance at losing value. That's just from what I've learned

I bought a roll of 1969 "S" pennies from the Federal Reserve, but when I opened it, I found a 1969 uncirculated "D" penny mixed in. This makes me suspicious that the coin broker may have repackaged the roll using Federal Reserve wrappers after searching through them himself. It seems odd that a Denver-minted penny would end up in a roll that should only contain San Francisco-minted ones. Call me cynical, but I can't think of another explanation for this mix-up.

Quinn you should know by now that the Canadian 1967 bird cent is a Rock dove. I also like it because I was 7 years old in 1967 and collected my first rock dove as a child. Being from Michigan we get lots of Canadians. In the last 20 years I’ve probably amassed 10 rolls of the rock doves

I found a really good DD 69s a couple years ago. Its a very obvious DD on the date. Pretty cool. Been harder to get boxes since the "coin shortage". But lately has been better. My best box ever about 4 years ago must have been rolled from the change machine that customers use cause it had 106 wheats and 12 Indian heads. I was so excited I ran back to bank and begged to buy all they had. Oh that box was also mostly coppers. Half of the next box I got from them was good but it tapered. I'm still pissed at myself for not getting nickels, dimes, and quarters. Who knows what they had turned in. But was still a fun box. The 2020 hindsight kicked in later lol

And too, I metal detect, and the 82 and newer pennies deteriorate fast once they hit the ground. The zinc is crap, and they are a nuisance to metal detectorists. All other countries quit making pennies, and we should too. I have saved every copper penny I have ever dug, and i'm going over 400 lbs now. 2021 Quarters are actually better.

I remember getting a box full of 2021 cents and used it to buy some CDs at a record store. To me that whole box (which I searched btw) to me was worthless in terms of collectible value. Pretty cool hunt! I found a blank planchet in 2018 in a box of new rolls. I carefully put it in a flip with a coin from the same roll. I also look for other errors like clips, misaligned die, off center strikes... It's a bummer getting a box of new coins, but I make the best of it. Keep the videos coming!

I have some advice on those crossing the Delaware quarters. The way things stand they are likely to be a one year only coin design. Putting back a few rolls of them uncirculated would be a great idea as collectors will be wanting them in uncirculated condition at a later date. Next year is the beginning of the new quarters celebrating famous women and not only will the reverse be dedicated to certain women, but the obverse will have a ‘new’ effigy of Washington on it as a younger man that was originally in consideration for the 1932 Washington Quarter. If I remember correctly it will be the one designed by Laura Frazier.

Hate to say this but i really think you are wrong. There is no way doing this box is worth it ESPECIALLY if you are a new collector it takes at least two hours to do a box, and 10-30 minutes to call a different bank and get another box. Its also much easier to get a box when you have one to trade.

Have you ever found a 1983 penny over 3 grams? They changed the penny in the middle of 1982 so any left over copper would still be dated 1982? I did find a blank penny metal detecting. I don't remember what I did with it.
