We think many of you have experience with oversprouting seed potatoes, and this leads to several questions. Are my seed potatoes still good? Can I still grow using these seed potatoes? How do I plant oversprouted seed potatoes?
In this video, we removed some of the longer sprouts from our seed potatoes in order to see how it would impact the seed potato itself. Additionally, we planted the sprouts that we removed from the seed potatoes, and we provide you with an update on those sprouts as well.
This will be the first of two videos on this topic, as we will also show you what happens when we grow potatoes in buckets without a mother potato attached.
We hope you enjoy this garden tips video about growing potatoes at home!

Nearly exactly what I was looking for. Really struggled to get an answer out of google till i found this video. My potato stems look a bit less sturdy so I’ll go with fully buried. Thx for the info.

Mine was completely by accident. The sprouts were all 3 inches or longer when I pulled them off the potatoes and left the sprouts in a bowl outside by the composter. It rained that evening and I honestly forgot about them until I went looking for my bowl later in the week, next thing I know they all have roots and are growing like mad! Planted them in fabric round planter bags and had a pretty decent yeald. Don't know what breed they were but they had red skin and white flesh. Very tasty.

Oh man, I'm glad this popped up in my suggestions. I had this exact question about planting just the sprouts a few weeks ago, but I was having trouble finding information. Web searches are basically useless these days. I tried planting a few sprouts by themselves, but haven't seen any results yet. They might have been too small.

I did this last year and got good results, I did it with russets and I got 3-4 medium sized potatoes from each and that was in an area that gets 1/4 of the day in shade. This year I'm doing multiple varieties in multiple locations.

@TheSupreme436 Thank you for sharing your results. @Firevine, I know what you mean. I tried to find some videos about this too before I started our own experiment, but there was next to nothing out there. I am glad we could try to help. :)

This is what people do with sweet potatoes. So, I am guessing that it will also work for regular potatoes. I love your experiments. Keep them coming.

The biggest difference would be that potatoes are in the nightshade family and sweet potatoes are in the morning glory family, so maybe the results will be different, but we'll see, and we will definitely report out. :)

I save potatoes in a large Faraday bag. It's porous, allowing some air flow, but blocks the EM spectrum, including light.

If I had a question to ask, it would be… How can I keep my stored potatoes from sprouting too early? I do want to have sprouts in the spring, but I got sprouts way too early!

I have an over sprouted purple potato and a bunch of regular. Idaho type potatoes that are over due for planting. I’ll do what you did, and try to plant everything. Good wishes to you !

This spring I accidentally broke off a few sprouts and decided to plant both the potato and the sprout. Both actually started growing. Unfortunately we had that deep cold hit again in late March, early April. The potatoes survived and are growing fine but the sprouts died. I’m interested in seeing if they would have produced a potato

I had some red Norlands from last year that had grown enormous sprouts. I broke them off and left the potatoes in a bag intending to toss them but a couple of weeks later I found they had more sprouts. I’m saving them to grow a bit more and will plant them. I wondered if those shoots were edible? I’ve also saved the ends off some store bought potatoes to plant. I remember my mother doing this many years ago. Very interested to hear the results of your experiment.

I imagine the shoots contain a good deal of solanine, though I am not certain, so I don't think I would attempt to eat the sprouts, but yes the plants grow more sprouts, so definitely try planting them, and we will let you know the results of our experiment in a few months. :)

Here’s a question: when you plant different varieties of potatoes in close proximity, will they produce hybrids the following year?
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 2 ай бұрын
Great question! My understanding is that nightshades don't crosspollinate. But that would be very interesting if we could make that happen. We can get hybrids of sorts if we grow potatoes from potato berries though, and that makes for some fun experimentation.

Have you grown a large potato like the big Idaho "baked" potatoes if so where did you find the seed potato from?
@GutenGardening
@GutenGardening 2 ай бұрын
Yes we definitely have. We have purchased the seed potatoes from our local nursery before, and this year we are growing Caribou Russet potatoes from Wood Prairie Family farm (though we haven't tried that variety before this year). You can get 5% your order from there if you use our link in the description (if you want to try that out).

This should be an interesting experiment, my guess is the broken off sprouts won’t have large potatoes, due to the sprouts won’t have a large of energy stored in them. Hopefully I’m wrong and they will grow regular sized potatoes.

If I had to predict the results, I suspect something similar. I am interested to see how it plays out in that regard. I also wonder how large the plant portion itself will grow to.

I saw a guy do it on another video. He put the sprouts in solo cups. When they were ready to be planted in a larger pot, he did. When he harvested them, they were only growing in the area of the original cup, not throughout the larger container. I thought it was interesting.

Is the Molly upside-down??? Will probably grow like that anyway. I've been saving eyes for a couple months just to try this. Somehow I can't bring myself to "kill" anything that might be "alive" and grow😂 (yes, its psychotic)
