@TheTreyBombay7 жыл бұрын
It is still a lubricant for non mechanical driven fuel pumps. The older 1950's and earlier era it did not matter, as those were generally a rubber diaphragm. But the new style electric pumps need lubrication by the fuel, and even more importantly cooling from the fuel.

Hey Rob, I just wanted to add on what you said at 3:25 about losing brakes and steering as soon as the engine dies. While it is true that the steering will get heavier right away, the brakes won't for that exact reason. With vacuum style brake boosters, the check valve that keeps the brake booster from pulling air back in also holds vacuum in the system so that in the event of an engine failure, you still have a few pumps of assisted pedal action. Still an awesome video and something that I've wondered about myself!

SI0AX if you live where there's snow you'll actually get rust from the gas tank in the ground. Or you have an older car you can't help the tank going bad over time. When you run out of gas the return line instead of spraying under the gas line it sprays above the gas and stirs up trash in the tank and makes it get sucked into the system usually there's a filter before the pump.
@shadowthehedgehog47375 жыл бұрын

Distance till empty is an estimate of the max you can go before needing to find a fuel source. not distance until complete shut down. A lot of vehicles in the 1990s had a extra low fuel lamp or check gauges lamp for when the gauge showed 2 to 4 gallons left. The whole point is they are trying to do everything possible to keep people from running the vehicles out of fuel. Including the safe range they estimate you can go on the fuel left.

Your car's fuel economy system assumes you won't be foolish enough to run the sump (fuel) pump dry. there's a liter or two in the fuel lines between the tank and engine, but running your lines dry will cause damage to your car. This is where that extra ~20 miles comes from.

I was driving my 67 gto when i ran out of gas. Because it was a stick I left it in gear so the power steering pump was still being turned by the motor until I came to a stop. And the engine kept making vacuum so the power breaks kept working. It did come to a stop real quick due to the engine breaking. Hardest part was getting fuel to fill the float bowls on the carb. Killed the battery cranking the motor. Mechanical fuel pump.

When your engine dies you don't run out of power assist you have about 1-4 stops for the brakes and a couple steering wheel movements before your accumulator which stores extra fluid runs out.
@RecklessRegal7 жыл бұрын
GM didn't give you any grace period intentially. The range to empty is an approximation based on the average fuel economy and how much fuel is left in the tank. Actual fuel economy may not match average fuel economy over those last bits of fuel, and thus you get a range. I owned a CTS-V just like in this video, and saw anywhere from 40 to 100 miles to E when the low fuel market comes on at 50 miles to E.
