@35:00 ish… is it the case that in the Dunning-Kruger effect that there is a tendency for self-assessment of competency to go down as your expertise in the subject goes up? I thought it was that people grossly overestimate their competence in unknown fields but this is quickly corrected as they begin to learn how little they know or can do but that this self assessment quickly tracks actual competency.

The argument about people in hell continuing to sin makes sense, as long as some people actually do eventually leave. Sure, some people continually reject God, but tons of people, when given the direct evidence of God's existence, so many people would change their mind immediately. The reason I "sin," is because I don't believe in God or sin or eternal life or any of it. I have my own ethics. If I died and woke up in hell, I'd immediately become a believer and try to change. I literally can't believe in God as I am now, like my mind just won't let me. I can't just make myself believe in something that I don't believe. If God exists, he gave me this mind that can't believe in him. Once I was in hell, that would obviously be pretty convincing evidence and I could easily believe then. If I'm punished for eternity for that, then I really hope that kind of God doesn't exist.
@LarryRuffin-vy7hx2 жыл бұрын
When you say your mind won’t let you believe in God, are you referring to the Christian Conception of God (or Islamic) that does include beliefs about Hell, or just a Theistic or Deistic conception of God? Like a Neccesarily existent Creator of the Universe who has all the Omni-properties? Because you could believe in that sort of God without believing in Hell.
@wet-read2 жыл бұрын
@@LarryRuffin-vy7hx I personally find deism to be little better than theism on this score; many of the same questions could be asked of such an entity. I am not convinced some or all of the omni properties exist or could exist, and some seem to me to contradict each other.

Joe, it’s me, Meow. If I donated to a charity of your choosing, would you ever do a 60-min phone chat with me on why Christian Universalism is a better option than both ECT and annihilationism? It has been in the works for many years now, and is going to be as exhaustive as it can be, summarising scholarship on a variety of areas. Cameron...... Great show as always. I think a show with you and Joe together would be fantastic. However, when you are speaking my friend I find my attention drifting from what ought to be the case, i.e. grasping the ideas you are discussing, to counting the number of times you say "like". Some friendly constructive criticism, your use of the word "like" I suspect as a pause mechanism to gather your thought is tedious to be kind. It seems generational. I'm 53 so I am a bit older than you. Your generation and after have adopted the "like" pause and substituting the word "feel" instead of "think" to, I think, its detriment. (Pun Intended!) God bless my friend and well done otherwise..........

@Syed Sye, thanks for your thoughts, it’s helpful to see how you are thinking through the teachings of the Koran. From a Christian perspective, I would say that it is important to distinguish between the effort of working hard to do the right thing and chose the right way, from the grace and forgiveness that God offers in Jesus, which is not earned by us, but received as a gift. We do strive to do what is right and to do no wrong against God or man, but because we have already wronged God we cannot come to him to demand that we be treated according to our works. If so, then there is only condemnation. No spouse, if they have been unfaithful can use their good works to excuse their disloyalty. They must address the disloyalty and appeal to their spouses mercy. However, like a wronged spouse, God has come to us even before we come to him, and has offered us forgiveness. In the Mosaic teachings Israel was told to offer sacrifices to show we were guilty, but that God accepted our offerings as a confession of our sin, and he would meet with the high priest at the mercy seat to accept the blood of the sacrifice, which represented the whole of the repentant sinner’s LIFE, which was being offered in submission to God. But it was made clear even to Abraham (Gen. 15) that the sacrifice was not earning merit with God through obedience, but was actually showing our acknowledgement of our wrong. And the sacrifice was not just about what we were confessing, but it also shows what God was doing for us in forgiveness. Divine forgiveness is not without cost, and God declared to Abraham that even though forgiveness was costly, that God himself would do what was needed for men to be made right with him and for his promised blessings to come true for both Jew, Arab, and Greek. He would forgive in mercy and not on the basis of man’s own righteousness and good works. This promise made to Abraham was fulfilled by Jesus, who was one with the Father in being and purpose, yet united to us in our nature and as our high priest. For only God can forgive sins, and only he could act as our high priest. Animal sacrifices would not do, for it is God himself, who offers himself to us when he forgives (2 Cor. 5:19). It is for this reason that we believe that Jesus died not just as a prophet, but as God’s very representative, as God himself on the cross. This is how we are forgiven by the great act of God himself in his King (Mat 18:23-27), whom he has made to be Lord over all, because he was willing to be the servant of all. Even to be humbled to the point of an undeserved death of a wicked man (though he was not wicked). This he did to show the cost of forgiveness for him, to redeem us from under the curse of the law. It is a curse not because the law is bad or because we should not strive to be good, but because we are never good enough. We always need his gracious forgiveness. Always, and if we accept this, not because we are good and have worked hard, but because we see our need before his perfect purity, then he is pleased to make us his children. So then our hard work to be good is not to earn our status as children of God, but to act out our adopted status because of his mercy. We strive to please him because he has already loved and forgiven us (John 3:16, 1 John 4:19). God is willing to forgive all, whether Jew, Moslem, or Christian or atheist, but they must believe that he: 1) exists, 2) he is good, 3) he is a rewarder of those that seek him, 4) that we do not seek him in our own good deeds but on the basis of his good mercy, and in faith. We trust in him and his forgiveness. This is what it means to believe in Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God (this title means the Davidic King, not a being that God physically procreated. Such is impossible because God is Spirit and has no body, but God being a Spirit and all powerful over nature may write himself into his story of creation as a man, even as the King of this world) This faith will often times make one a bad rabbinic Jew or a poor Moslem, if you think that we please God only by striving to be obedient, but faith in divine forgiveness makes one into a deeper follower of Jesus, one who intimately knows that all rests on God’s mercy and provision for us. I would offer that for your consideration, and in contrast to what you have gleaned from the Koran. May God help us to see which is his way. Pray for me, I shall pray for you. God must give us the light.

For religion to grow (trap gullible minds) it needs to find gaps that their assertions can inhabit without being tested, and as a result you will find religious folk changing their approach into ways that their assertions are less exposed to critique.
