What has happened to Toyota India? Storytime in Malayalam.

Toyota, one of the largest car manufacturers in the world started out their innings in India with a well engineered product- the Qualis. This was followed up by the blockbuster Innova, and the invincible Fortuner. But other than these two utility vehicles, they have completely lost track of every other segment they have tried, with the Corolla, Etios and Liva being discontinued.
Although they were deep into diesels, up till 2016, Toyota didn’t have a diesel engine plant in India. The Innova and Fortuner D4D engines were imported from Thailand while the 1.4 diesel for the Etios and Altis were imported from Japan.
The brand now exists in the small segment with rebranded Maruti products as the Urban Cruiser and the Glanza. We talk about what happened to Toyota, how they ended up in this state and the probable way forward.

Great content on Toyota.. One thing I wanted to point out is spiraling cost of premium cars --- Yes Cars are getting Expensive is a fact... Other than Inflation one has to consider is USD/INR Equation - as most of these have imported technology and the premium players have lot of components shipped into the country.. Yes Excise Duty has come down for SKD & CKD over time... A small illustration... Merc 1996 E220 was 21-24L & in 2021 E200 is 63-67L meanwhile USD/INR has moved from 30-32 to 70-74 during that period..... Car Price is up by 3.2X while USD is up 2.3X.. Volvo 2008 XC90 was 45-47L & in 2021 XC90 is 90L-110L (90L being the comparable model) meanwhile USD/INR has moved from 40-42 to 70-74 during that period.. Car Price is up by 2.1X while USD is up 1.8X.. W222 2014 S 500 was 156-160L in 2014 & W223 S450 is 217-220L meanwhile USD/INR has moved from 59-61 to 70-74 during that period.. Car Price is up by 1.40X while USD is up 1.2X.. The Cars have been updated for features and technology too over this time so much of the car price being higher Vs the currency fluctuation is justified. Hope to see a video from you guys on this cost increase and feature addition to cars over 25 years.... an E class is good one to illustrate it as it has been the long standing model in India...

I really love the mid 2000s Toyota range in the MiddleEast. The Avalon, Aurion and of course the LC100 and FJ Cruiser are my favourites. Especially the Avalon (third gen). Even the Echo was super cute! Another Toyota vehicle I really love is the Previa. I remember even in 2007-08 or so, the third gen had electric controls for opening rear doors and all. And was so frikkin comfy too (rear bucket seats). It is crazy when we realize that around the same time, they had just the Qualis and later, the Innova in India.

Yes it was very sad to note that Toyota is avoiding india.. Through their tie with maruti they are experimenting & studying Indian customer demand and interest in the expense of Suzuki R&D.So I strongly expects some surprise moves like they did in the case of Qualis.Maybe another KANBAN strategy is under process.
