Thank you so much for watching! Hope you enjoyed it!
If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make weekly "comedy" videos every Sunday evening. As an American living in London I love noticing the funny differences between the cultures and one of my most popular video series is my British VS American one. I'm also known for making terrible puns so sorry in advance. Hope to see you around, and I'll see you next Sunday! :)

No no no!!’n First past the post is NOT a plurality voting system. You do not get to express preferences in first past the post, you get to put one cross in one box and that it that.

This is only half right!! First past the post IS a plurality voting system. A 'plurality' means that the candidate who receives more votes than any other candidate, but NOT necessarily a majority, is elected. That's how FPTP works. Under FPTP you can't express second or third preferences, but that has nothing to do with 'plurality'.

First past the post is absolutely a plurality voting system, the person with the plurality of the votes wins. Expressing preferences has nothing to do with a plurality systems, a preferential system is be definition majoritarian and not a plurality system. I think you’re getting confused between the definition of a plurality voting system and the definition of pluralism, something which does not exist in a plurality system.

The 40 hr work week is out dated. It was created when it was expected that someone was at home doing all the housework and taking care of children (in the case of families). Now, we can't do that (I feel no matter where you are in the world). You can't live on a single income if you have a family. Even single parents work multiple jobs and sometimes the kids get jobs as soon as they're able because of expenses.

Something that shouldn't exist: school uniforms not allowing girls to wear trousers. Edit: A couple of people have mentioned boys not being allowed to wear skirts, and I 100% agree that uniform shouldn't be gendered either way, it's just in my personal experience i know more girls who'd rather wear trousers than boys who want to wear skirts, so it sprang to mind first. Also thought I'd mention that while a lot of schools have changed the rules, way too many haven't imo. I go to school in an area with two mixed schools, a boys school, and a girls school all about a two minute walk away from each other. One mixed school has strictly gendered uniform, the other doesn't gender the uniform, the girls school only allows skirts, and the boys school only trousers. Like I say, all schools should have non-gendered uniform, not just some.

@@user-xf4ls5el1w Repeating your point isn’t answering my question. What’s sexually suggestive about a skirt? Unless we’re talking skirts that are too tight or too short. In which case I’ve never heard of a school that doesn’t actively try to make girls wear longer skirts. In my old school pencil skirts were banned because girls only wanted to wear short tight skirts that go halfway up there thighs (which the school was actively trying to prevent). The only skirts allowed were long frilly ones (I don’t know the proper terms). Because of that almost all the girls started wearing trousers because if it wasn’t skirts that were inappropriate then they didn’t want skirts. So I resent the idea of you trying to suggest the idea that Uk school system is systematically paedophilic just because your trying to push an agenda or because you simply havnt thought about it much. I know it just seems like an innocent comment but it’s just factually wrong. Unless of course it isn’t in which I’d like to know more and to be educated. Which was the purpose of my last comment in which you simply repeated your point without elaborating whatsoever.

Removing the "child-free" stigma! I'm 44, have been happily married for 18 years and we don't have, and definitely don't want, children. So I've had people assume one or both of us are infertile, been told we're selfish, I've been told I'm broken because I obviously don't have a "maternal instinct", had people sympathise because there's "obviously something wrong with our marriage"...the list goes on. Oh and most of the above comes from complete effing strangers 😡 So yeah I'd love people to stop thinking we're weird or broken because we don't want to have kids! Cos we're not!!

This is one of the shitiest things that still happens in developed countries around the world. I get some people are old-fashioned numpties that still insist on nuclear families and others are concerned about how that would affect the economy, but honestly... there aren't many couples who remain without children their whole lives, so it's not going to fuck the economy if a few people opt out of the baby-making - darkness knows how many orphans are doomed to a life of feeling somehow inadequate or how many children have to suffer biological families that don't know the first thing about looking after children, why would you sacrifice the children for that anyway? If children aren't wanted in a family, they shouldn't be forced upon them by society, unless society feels like making both the children and the adults miserable for no sane reason. Anyway a couple can have a fulfilling relationship without children. You are not broken, damaged, wrong, or inhuman because you do not want children. Your body is something you control and you are the only one who should have power over it. No one should decide this for you. We live in a civilised, developed world where we have a CHOICE. We have FREEDOM to choose how we want to live. And, as long as it doesn't harm anyone - and I don't see how NOT having children would harm anybody - a person should live how they choose. You do not need to be infertile to not have children, because this is the 21st century and people shouldn't have to explain themselves to anyone about these kinds of things. You're not selfish for not wanting to have children. Hell, maybe you're doing society a favour not having a single child and they just don't know it. Not like all children are angels, or all children will end up having great and productive lives regardless of their home environment and whether or not their mother had a maternal instinct. There are plenty of mothers who clearly don't have a maternal instinct, and you could still have a maternal instict that you just use it a different way. (Perhaps to raise pets, or teach children, idk.) But even if you didn't have a maternal instinct, that doesn't make you broken. It's not a disability, disorder or illness. The world could have one less Monet, or surgeon for your decision but it could also have one less criminal or NEET, so the impact of one couple not having a child or children is usually pretty minimal. I would also not consider it "sympathetic" for people to assume something is wrong with your marriage because of this. I'd say it's rude, presumptious and ignorant more than anything. People should be made aware that everyone has different goals in life and for some, having children just isn't and won't ever be one of them. The same way that some aren't interested in the opposite sex, or sex in general, or dating, or public displays of affection, some people aren't interested in children. That's it. That's all there needs to be to it. Strangers shouldn't assume anything or ask personal questions to begin with. It's annoying when they pry like that. I'm sorry you've met such shitty people. Hopefully if the woke crowd brings anything good into society it will include less pressure on people to have children.

The complaint about pennies costing more to produce than they're worth is a little bit ignorant, as I'm pretty sure small-value coins have *always* costed more to produce than their stated value. The reason it doesn't matter is because they're spent over and over again. Coins represent value as long as they're in circulation, so if you had a choice between making a coin cheaply and making a coin that will survive in circulation for a long time, you should opt for the latter.

Even people who live out in the middle of nowhere would struggle if cash wasn’t a payment option. Banks either don’t open in some rural areas or they are in the process of closing because having locations there is costing the banks more money than they’re bringing in from those locations.

@@dylandajhharwood5566 Many communities (rural, low income, industrial areas, places with high populations of immigrants and people of color) typically are under banked, meaning there are generally very few banks available. Banks in the United States have a long and racist history of scamming and abusing low income, so many people simply don’t trust banks. Banks consider low income areas “high risk areas” and will refuse to operate in those places. The post office in the United States used to also double as a public banking option, acting historically as the best banking option for low income residents. You could avoid fees, cash your pay check, pay your bills, etc., until that option was taken away. Additionally many immigrants are extremely limited in banking options, and many undocumented immigrants are paid in cash only. Lots of low income workers make a huge amount of their earnings from cash tips as well and can avoid that income being taxed if it kept out of a bank. Hope that explains a little bit!

On FPTP, it’s perhaps worth adding that although there was a referendum to replace it, that was a stitch up. The choice was between two majoritarian systems, the other being AV. This despite the Jenkins report having recommended AV+ for the UK. Ideally, we need STV, AMS or similar to get a Commons where seat counts are broadly in line with voter patterns, but where local representation (for a given value of local) still exists and where we don’t fall into the rabbit hole of list MPs you cannot oust. And for that to happen, Labour needs to come to terms with having to work with others (for which it would be in power very regularly) rather than being isolationist (which mostly leaves Labour the biggest loser, yelling from the sidelines).

He was so drained after 10-12 hrs a day plus commuting. They also found that there was a lot of looking busy and not actually doing anything going on because the company wasn't organised enough to plan the work that needed doing properly. It could have worked as a shorter more efficient work week with 4 x 8hr or 6 hr days if the planning by management was done better. In Scotland we have no Sunday trading laws. And some supermarkets open 24hrs. Tv license is worth its value so I don't mind paying for it. We also got rid of the half penny in the 80's. In Scotland for Scottish Parliament we have a mixture of first past the post and the single transferable voting system and local elections are totally single transferable votes just like the old days when UK was in the European Union. The Conservatives were dead against UK parliament changing to either proportional representation but had to ask for referendum as the were in coalition with the Libdems and it was part of the coalition agreement. If I remember correctly we in Scotland were to busy voting in both local and Scottish Parliamentary elections at the time to not care about a referendum on the UK parliament. But I do remember thinking that those against change was basically saying that UK citizens were too thick to understand a new voting system despite the fact that only England at the time was the only one who solely used 1st past the post.

In terms of cash vs card and contactless, the ease of contactless makes me uncomfortable becuase I struggle to conceptualise that as spending money. Card payment with pin is a bit better and cash makes me really see that I'm spending it. That said, I do still use contactless because it's still easy.

"It's better than the US system" Both systems are fundamentally broken at their very core and are honestly pretty undemocratic when you look into them in any detail. At least all our constituencies have equal weight with each having about the same amount of people rather than there being more weight to your vote if you're in a state that has fewer people thanks to the 2 free EC members each state gets? I guess? On the other hand the US system has an elected upper house rather than an appointed one, so it's the swings and roundabouts of shit election systems. At least the Welsh and Scottish systems are better? (FWIW, if I could rewrite UK democracy to my dictate; I'd abolish the monarchy, keep single-member constituencies but replace the way we elect MPs with a condorset system - Likely MAM specifically - and implement PR for the lords while increasing the power of the upper house to make it proportionate to that of the commons.)

In my country shops used to be open on Sundays but some years back we had a referendum on whether or not we wanted the shops to be closed on Sunday (fully closed, btw, none of that 4 hours crap) and most people were in favor, because despite it being "an inconvenience," we sympathise with retail workers and wanted them to have at least one guaranteed day off per week. So no, I don't think we should abolish that, in fact, more countries in 2021 should have that system.
@TheCrazyFreak
@TheCrazyFreak 3 жыл бұрын
@@Alcogod But that still requires _someone_ to work on Sunday/the weekend. And if you mean that someone _only_ works then and not during the week... It'd be great if that could work, but unfortunately no one can survive financially by only working weekends. If they also work during the week, however, the same problem arises that was the reason the law got introduced in the first place: that employee works every day of the week with no days off.
@TheCrazyFreak

@@Alcogod Hmm, I suppose that would be a solution, yes. I'm not a fan of the 5-day work week anyway. I do really like your idea, however, and hope it becomes reality one day.

Retail services exist for the consumers of those services. If the consumer is willing to pay for what it costs the business to provide the convenience of having the shops open everyday, then it should be open everyday. Sunday should be treated like any other day. There are many ways to make it work without the workers being overworked.

Charges are all dependent on who owns the cash point/payment machine. Few, if any.banks will charge you to use their machines, even if you don't bank with them, but the ATMs in the local corner shop or whatever are owned by a company, and leased out to the shop, and charging you is an extra income stream for them.

I never really get the argument against the TV Licence. The licence is there to pay for the live transmission of BBC channels and funds their services (the TV channels, the radio stations, iPlayer, their creative output, etc) all for only 96p a day. It's a lot of content for a reasonable price. You pay the fee to get these services which are ad free (that's where other channels get the bulk of their funds through ad revenue). If you don't use the services then don't pay. But I think it's a bit ridiculous to say "who watches TV in 2021?". Well, millions of people do. Just look at the recent record breaking success of Line of Duty as an example. People of all ages use these services, but just because some people only use streaming or KZbin, doesn't mean others don't use and value the services provided by the license. But if you do want to use the service you pay the fairly minimal fee, it's only fair. (NB. I'm a 20 year old before anyone says I'm just an old man who doesn't get streaming - I use streaming services to)

I get landlords need to know you're able to afford your rent every month but when the minimum salary isn't even a studio flat down here how do people expect single parents and young people to not live at home or have to go on some sort of benefit? If you take cash out of the equation then companies that produce bank cards (both debit and credit) or handle money transactions (worldline) are going to become monopolies, set the prices they want for you to have and use your card, and have tons of info on you that they can sell (which they do already with what they have).
