My major concern is that Labour have very much locked themselves into this course of action. They've consistently promised no tax rises and no spending cuts, and reaffirmed that promise after the election. So the only way for them to raise funding is to stimulate economic growth. If they pull this off it'll go down as one of the biggest economic turnarounds in our country's history. But if they fail and need to raise taxes or introduce austerity measures, nobody will ever trust Starmer again. I suppose we'll wait and see.

It also acts as a way for the AG to be in a way independent of government / cabinet but especially the labour party. Under last few AG's who were also Conservative MPs they acted as cover for government / party when they were up to something dodgy by saying things they were doing were legal when they were not or finding sneaky workarounds to make dodgy acts not appear so..... With Hermer being brought in like this, not being an MP for the party I think he will being a more "your not going to get away with that here" approach and will not have to yield to party politics.... Many governments have shied away from that, because those top-level roles in the departments and ministries are basically "lobbyists" and "administrators" for those departments and ministries. They obviously have some responsibilities on the subject matter, but their main role is getting things done within their department - and that is a skill politicians usually have, as they know how to, you know, do politics. So we have to see how this goes - I hope they can have more of an impact and don't drown in the administrative graveyard that you can find in the minefields of whitehall.

In Northampton, the roads are outright dangerous due to the lack of maintenance. Within a few days of Labour being in power I noticed more and more potholes being marked and eventually repaired. Coincidence I think not

I think Starmer is essentially a technocrat and that´s fine, as long as you have some balance in the cabinet. The problem is his cabinet is largely full of Keir Starmer clones, the only ones that are interesting are the prisons minister and the science minister. I think it´s dangerous to fill a cabinet full of people who 100% agree with you. I think this government will be more competent at running departments etc than the Tories (not hard to achieve), but Starmer doesn´t get that you can´t solve all problems just by running departments more efficiently. Like other Liberal democracies, the UK has a number of huge crises, the first and foremost being wealth inequality and it´s contributing greatly to political instability. The other one is whether or not we want to have a pause on muliticulturalism or whether we want it to continue. The UK won´t cease to be multicultural and I think most people don´t want a total cease in all honesty, but there is definitely a debate as to if we´re becoming too diverse and having some fragmentation. I tend to be on the more liberal side of that debate myself, but we can´t just wish the issue away, like Starmer wants to, it has to be tackled. I don´t think Starmer really understands or cares about these problems and it could be his undoing. He doesn´t deal with opposition well either, he just tends to shut people down or kick them out of the party if they disagree with him.

I suppose you could say that Kier is a product of the situation the Labour party has found themselves in. They want someone who runs a tight ship by not allowing dissent within the party and someone so utterly boring that they will likely not get involved in scandals. I actually think it's a pretty good strategy for getting into and staying in government.

@@pepela8214 well, they kind of won 2024 by default, the Tories had screwed up so badly that no opposition party could fail to lose that election. The thing is if Reform hadn´t have run, Starmer wouldn´t have won a landslide, he may have even had to do a coalition with the Libdems. Likewise, structural stupidity is a real thing and it´s what happens when you have no ideological diversity. I.e the Tory party went crazy, largely because Johnson kicked out all the Remainers and all the liberal Tories. I have a feeling the same thing will happen to Starmer´s Labour if he just has a cabinet of fairly hard Blairites and doesn´t consider any ideas from further left.

​@@talideon The assumptions are not baseless. 1)My first paragraph is true, essentially there´s nobody in his shadow cabinet who isn´t from his faction of the party. I suspect he thought even Thornberry might give him some opposition. Even Blair had people like Clare Short and Frank Dobson in his cabinet. There is no ideological diversity at all. That´s not "an assumption", that´s a fact. All these people have histories you can easily look up. 2) That´s how Starmer has operated during his election campaign, he´s very reluctant to deal with fundamental questions about how the country should actually look. It´s not part of how his mind works. That´s not a problem if he has people in the cabinet who gets that, but so far he´s filled the cabinet with people who think like him. 3)He doesn´t deal with opposition well. Blair and Brown, whatever their faults, didn´t just shut people down who disagreed with them. They knew how to make their case. Starmer very much does. Plenty of party activists have challenged him publically and he just stared at them blankly and then had them expelled. 4) He may well get re-elected and I suspect he will be better than the Tories, but that might not be good enough in 2029 and the election results show he has a big potential challenge to his left as well as his right. That´s not "baseless", that´s based on information from last election results.

Incrementally like everything else, as for Israel it is our greatest ally of democracy in the middle east though losing the propaganda war at current. It is against British and overall democratic interests to prevent Israel attaining needed arms. Not to mention such aid is bargaining power giving influence and in return usually for a myriad of technology made in Israel. If your interests align with Russia, China, Iran and North Korea perhaps you should revaluate them.

​​@@Lemon10.5 Gonna be difficult no? Britains east coast got some of the most rapidly eroding shorelines in europe cus a lot of it is composed of glacial til (soft rock very easy to weather). The Netherlands managed it because the flooded area was inland therefore they could dam it up and then go for reclamation. Defending one area causes problems later on down the shoreline sediment system.
