In your residency as an ER doc, are you independent? Or do you have to work alongside an experienced ED doc?

In every residency there will always be an attending that is responsible and oversees the work of the resident. Legally, that has to happen. Senior residents in our ED pretty much manage the patients on their own. The attending is there to oversee and help when needed. & they must see every patient that the resident saw.

Did you always know that you did not want to do a fellowship post residency?

Yeah. With EM, if you sub specialize most times you still just end up working in the ED. People often do fellowships if they’re interested in academia or want to be the director of something (EMS, ultrasound, etc). I’m not interested in that. I found that the training I get in residency is adequate enough without having to do a fellowship

@@WhiteCoatChronicles That makes a lot of sense. I am a rising EM PGY-2 but super unsure as to whether I want to do a fellowship or not. Hoping 2nd year will provide me with the clarity I need to finally make a decision.
