Mary Tudor has gone down in history as the Catholic tyrant "Bloody Mary." There’s certainly cause for such a brutal nickname: she executed hundreds of Protestants during her short reign. But there’s so much more to Queen Mary's life than her ruthless reputation. From her deranged childhood to her chilling romances, this is the untold story of England's very first queen.

I can’t help but feel sorry for Mary. Her mother was the only person who truly loved her. Her father was unbearably cruel to them both. Imagine having to go through life that way.😢

Elizabeth would NEVER have married Philip: (1) He did treat Mary poorly. (2)Hecwas her sibling's ex, who even admitted consumating that marriage. Elizabeth's claim to legitimacy was that Catherine if Aragon was not a true queen as Arthur's( unconsumated) ex. It would have put her legitimacy in question. (3) He would have pushed for Catholicism. (4) He wanted more power than a consort. (5) The English already didn't want him. He was a terrible choice fir Mary, & probably a worse one for Elizabeth.

If you want to count how many Catholics Henry eighth killed. If you just can't the pilgrimage of grace in which? A lot of the people surrendered being told that they would survive if they surrendered and then all the prisoners were executed. That's more than mary killed just from that one incident. In his couple of year reign, the number her brother killed the number of catholics he killed was staggering, And though Elizabeth started out seeming tolerant. Just as Mary started out being tolerant, Elizabeth killed a ton of Catholics toward the end of her reign. So the. Reason Mary comes off with see. Terrible nickname is because. After Elizabeth, the country went forward as protestant and protestants wrote the history. And to report the one catholic, even though her protestant predecessors killed way more catholics than she killed protestants

It seems her half sister, Elizabeth had quite a resumé of executions as well. It would seem she started out well but it eas a slippery slope. There were plenty of Catholics ended, partly due to the tensions between Elizabeth and a later Pope. She never married but did have men of interest. When some of them moved on they were punished.

Maybe that she was tolerant of Protestantism in the beginning of her reign until her false pregnancy, which she interpreted as punishment for not supporting the Catholic Church as the True Faith. Then she began prosecuting and persecuting Protestants as heretics to prove her faith. That is the period that earned her the nickname Bloody Mary.

I'm 68, and have had my nose in history books reading about this family since 5th grade, and have wondered why she'd burn SO many people to death...it's always struck me as a huge over-reaction. Your video enlightened me to the fact that she blamed the Protestant religion ITSELF - thus, the members instead of her Father - she took it out on the RELIGION - instead of blaming her FATHER. I hope I've explained what I mean - it was a jaw-dropper, all of a sudden she's not a rabid nut, but a rabid nut getting revenge. Thank you for the insight.

History is definitely written by the winners, and Mary's side ended up as the big loser, hence her reputation. Henry's reformation had been unpopular with his common subjects, and he put down uprisings with brutal violence and mass slaughter. But most people don't think of Henry's head count, they only think about the head-chopping of the wives. Elizabeth killed more Catholics than Mary had Protestants, although she's remembered as "good Queen Bess". Admittedly, of course, Elizabeth's reign was much longer than Mary's. Mary, like her mother Katherine of Aragon, had once been very popular. Mary lost her popularity in part because of the Spanish alliance and the loss of Calais. The majority of the population had not been afraid of a restoration of Catholicism under Mary, as this video implies. In fact, Mary invited the papal legate Cardinal Pole, (of royal lineage himself), to reconcile the kingdom to Rome and re-establish the Church. Unlike her tyrannical father, Mary refused to accept the pretension that was was the supreme head of the church in England. She also promised she would not re-capture the properties Henry had usurped from the Church which he had used to buy political loyalty from the nobility. According to resolutely Protestant historian Froude, the return to Catholicism under Mary was greeted nationwide with relief and approval, if not outright rapture. England was not spiritually a Protestant nation until well into Elizabeth's reign, probably because of the persecution of Catholics and the disastrous Spanish invasion. As this video touches on, Mary's formative years were emotionally destructive and deranging. She and her mother had been savagely disgraced and humiliated by Henry, and thus had an even closer bond to each than is usual, but they had been cruelly separated. Katherine, the daughter of monarchs and the aunt of the Emperor who domains encompassed half the known world, died of malnutrition and neglect after years of abnegation and confinement. Mary was devastated, and she was now truly alone. After capitulating to Henry by signing an acknowledgement that all of Henry's actions had been proper and just, Mary became consumed by guilt and self-hatred until her last breath, believing that she had betrayed everything her mother had stood for, and had with singular bravery and self-possession had never surrendered.

It is indeed. Most of the Nation would have preferred to return to Catholicism. The only ones who didn't were the powerful nobles who benefited from stolen property from the Church. Mary was possibly poisoned by King Philip. Abdominal pain is very typical of poisoning (arsenic was often used), and brings about a fairly swift and agonizing death.

In regard to Philip: The black legend still does work after all those centuries. He might have been the less fortunate ruler (his Empire being in decline already) but he was a much nicer man Than Henry. And he is reported to being very civil with all of his wifes - even with Mary and especially in comparison to Henry (the bar being very low here). The marriage with French princess Isabel - the one he married instead of Elizabeth - was a particularly happy one. Lucky Philip. He was devasted by her death and the 2 girls (!) remained his favourite children. The letters to them reveal a very tender and loving father. Even his last marriage - again for dynastic reasons - was a fairly good one and Ana's death left him devasted. He wrote to one of his daughters:"This night will haunt me forever, even if I live up to a thousand years. He refused to remarry then bc. he had several sons out of his last marriage. Little did he know. His (private) letters are really interesting to read. However, I am not sure they have been translated into English.

Guess you didn't listen well. Fat old King Henry murdered up to 57,000 people, nearly all Catholics, for refusing to apostasize including his dearest friend, Saint Thomas More. Illegitimate Queen Elizabeth went on to murder many, many more Catholics. Cromwell, too, was a total freak. Poor Mary may have been unhinged, but she came nowhere near the Protest-ants vastly larger BLOODY death count. Get your History straight.

Do you think Henry the ace wives found him attractive? I think the only one who did was his first wife Catherine of Aragon and for the record she was a little bit older than Henry. The only reason Henry married her is because she was really married to his older brother and he died and so they made Henry marry her. Also, Henry, the 8th had pursued and Berlin's sister and had conquered her sexually and then grew bored with her and started to pursue and Berlin who didn't want to go down the same road or sister did. That's what the play that they made into a movie. Anna of a thousand days was about. Jane Seymour seemed to be okay with Henry but she was a wannabe social climber. She wasn't as innocent as people make her out to be. Henry's chairman wife didn't find him appealing at all so she made herself unattractive so he leave her alone. She did not want to end up the way Anne Boleyn had ended up. And she thought he was pretty disgusting to look at.. Catherine Howard was basically a teenage girl when Henry the 8th married her. He was 49 years old and he was not a young 49. He didn't look like the modern guys of who are 49 years old today who go to the gym and a gym rats. He was a fat old syphilitic man who looked a good 25 years older than what he was. Henry's last wife, Catherine Parr ,was a nice woman but had Henry not died, she probably would have gotten the ax too. At his death Henry, the 8th was so rotten with syphilis that he burst open from the disease before he could be buried. He had dementia due to syphilis. He also fell off his horse early on in his life and that ruined his career as the athlete he thought he was. He could no longer really effectively ride a horse. He couldn't get on her off a horse by himself. He had to be hoisted upon animal. His leg was rotten with gout and he no doubt had to dementia. So if I were you I wouldn't attack bloody Mary. She wasn't a nice woman but she had a rough life and she had a ruffle man in the guys of Henry the 8th. He wasn't a father to her so much as he was a sperm donor. Marriages in those days were arranged, not because the two were supposed to be in love. They were political marriages and for the record a lot of the peasants, the young girls their marriages were arranged as well. A farmer might decide he'd want to marry his daughter off to another farmer and thereby increase the land holdings or a Baker might decide to marry his daughter off to a blacksmith. Blacksmiths were noted for being well to do because everybody had to have their horses shot and they were very good at making armor and swords and the like. Women were nothing but shadow to be traded like a thoroughbred horse or a fatted calf to anyone that could increase their families wealth. Bloody! Mary was the queen of freaking England and she was going to get herself a stud if she could. That is why she wanted to see what the Spanish mofo looked like. Had it been reversed and she had been a man and wanted to see what the 27-year-old queen to be look like. She would have jumped out of for joy because frankly a 27 your baby making days are over as far as society was concerned you were an old maid. Mary had responsibilities and she was fighting for her life and therefore at the age of 37 she hadn't married yet. Turns out her pregnancies weren't pregnancies at all. The poor woman had cancer. So don't baby shamer don't cancer. Shame her don't bully her. She wasn't the best looking bitch in town, but she WAS the freaking Queen of England and guess what ... YOU,'RE NOT!!!. It wasn't an easy job then and it's not an easy job now, especially for a woman. Stop editorializing and just give the facts. Only the facts as Jack Webb used to say.
