OMG Heidi this is perfect timing for me. Your right pruning when you can is key. I work a full time job and have over 50 hydrangeas and right now they look sorta ratty. So thanks for sharing your knowledge

It would be great if you could do a video about how to identify the different types of hydrangeas. I don't know how to tell them apart - except for the oak leaf ones.
@gardencrossingsАй бұрын
Usually the blooms are the best identifying factor. If they are round and blue/purple or pink, usually that would be a mophead or bigleaf hydrangea. If the flowers start off white and turn in most cases to a pink and are a cone shape, they would be panicle or hardy hydrangeas. If the flowers are white and or pink and don't change color, ball shape they probably or smooth or arborescens hydrangeas.

Thank you so much. Now I feel more comfortable pruning my hydrangeas. I’m in Zone 8B.

Do I need to prune my mop head hydrangeas now also? I know they bloom on old growth.
@gardencrossingsАй бұрын
You are welcome.
@gardencrossingsАй бұрын
No, do not trim the mop head if they bloom on old growth. These are the trickiest to trim. The rule of thump would be after they are done blooming. But sometimes that is late in the season so it is to late to trim. With Mophead, if they are getting large and not looking good, i recommend let them bloom and then give them a good hard trim. you may sacrifice blooms the following year but it may be what you have to do to get your plant back to the size you want.

I have some limelight hydrangeas. I usually cut back in spring but hate looking g at the brownish flowers. Will they do as good if I trim th em back now? Mid Michigan 6a
@gardencrossingsАй бұрын
Yes they will. I always trim the limelight in the fall.

Why do you trim the blooms if you are trimming the branches after? Thanks, great video!
@gardencrossingsАй бұрын
I was just showing 2 ways of doing it. Some people just want the blooms trimmed so i showed that. And then I went and trimmed how I would trim for fall.
