I'm a student studying computer science engineering at the University and every time I'm asked what I want to be in life, I Usually say "data scientist". Honestly that wasn't the career I had in mind while entering the university. In fact, I didn't know which career I should persue. It's only after my first year ended, that I realized how much I love Maths and statistics. And upon investigation in career fields that combine both maths and computer science, I found data science and I decided to give it a trial. I equally love learning and I manage to code though I'm not that good at it😅 Just to say that I would really love to be a data scientist 😃

As an ML graduate can you tell me the difference between working as a Data Scientist and Machine learning engineer? I see that you guys too create ML models but then what does ML engineer do? Specialize in just creating models?
@egorhowell8 ай бұрын
That's a great question! Naturally there is quite a bit of overlap, but let me break it down. Data Scientist is quite a vague term still, so a DS at one company may only be doing analytics and another will be doing analytics and ML. If we assume we are a DS who does ML, our job is mainly to look for areas to improve the model using our mathematical knowledge of the algorithms and data. We can then test our ideas and see if they indeed do improve the model. ML Engineers are the middle-men who understand ML and the software engineering side on how to deploy ML algorithms in real time. They may not always be developing and improve algorithms, but they know how they work and they understand things like AWS really well to deploy the algorithms. There is obvious overlap, ML engineers can also build models and I as a data scientist have also deployed models before (even though my title is data scientist). It's really company dependent, so the job description is what matters more than the title. However, ML Engineers will do some form of ML (in the name), but not all data science roles will contain ML. Hope this makes sense?

Thank you for the video! Very insightful. How crucial is coding within this field? I love the mathematic and analytical aspects of the career, along with the presentations, teamwork, and interesting work topics, but I am not a big fan of coding. Would my discontent with coding be a huge problem with the field? I hear you say in the video that you work with multiple aspects of the job, from data, economics, and coding, but you describe the time you have for working as “coding blocks”. I’m just really looking for more info on how exactly people work this field, especially coding.
@egorhowell7 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for the kind words !!! :) I am not going to sugar coat, but coding is a big part of the job and is becoming increasingly so. To be honest, to be a really good data scientist you should be a good coder. It depends how much discontent you really have, its definitely not the whole job like it is software engineering, but it is a big chunk. Any algorithmic improvements you make, you will have to send them to production one way or another, and you need to code to do this. Similarly, almost any analysis I do is in Python or SQL. Out of curiosity, what is it that you don't like about coding? maybe there is a way you can grow to enjoy it!
