Grocery Shopping in Argentina. It’s worth the trip.

Let’s do a little bit of Show ‘n’ Shopping, shall we? Part supermarket hyper lapse, part show and tell, we've made shopping easy! Come shop with me and I’ll show you what you can expect to find at the supermarket when you're in Buenos Aires.
Today, you’ll get a taste (pardon the pun) of a popular mid-range supermarket in Argentina called Disco. Real Ingredients. Real Taste. Lots of amazing deli-fresh and delicious food awaits. Let's walk down the aisles together!
No matter where I am in the world, going to the supermarket comforts me. Am I wrong?
Rolling out of bed and into a supermarket in Argentina is one of my favorite pastimes. Where’s the beef? The supermarket is the ultimate in Pavlovian ambiance. I’m perpetually torn between the dog food and hair care aisles. Salivation and conditioning.
Europeans love their Aldi and Lidl stores. Walmart de México is the most popular large-scale supermarket with our southern neighbors. And in Brazil, Assaí Atacadistas is the top national supermarket chain.
American shoppers lose their marbles (and their moolah) for Trader Joe’s and Aldi, but they’ve also got a host of other chains such as Kroger, Whole Paycheck, er, um, Whole Foods Market (but let’s just call it Amazon), Safeway, Albertsons, Publix, Fresh Market, Wegmans, and Walmart to keep their fridges fully stocked. One stop shopping. We’d better not leave out Costco! What would millions of Americans do without their Kirkland brand toilet paper and organic chicken stock??? Great food. Great value.
Let’s get that dopamine flowing with a trip to the supermarket. I’ve always considered getting groceries as being therapeutic. Supermarket psychology actually begins before you walk into the joint. Food shopping is a feel-good activity. I get to anticipate the pleasure that fresh coffee and stove-top toasted-'til-golden rye bread with viscous peanut butter and creamy honey will gives me as soon as I put it into my cart. Nothing says survival and hedonism more than food. Multisensory moves from the second we make the decision to buy food.
Step beyond the automatic doors of most supermarkets today, and you’ll find something for nearly everyone! Snacks, carbs, plant-based, gluten-free, overly processed foods, raw foods, vegan foods, junkfood, nutritious foods, and even food that looks like real food, but it’s considered (in the industry) to be imitation food.
Are you still ordering your groceries online or have you gone back to brick-and-mortar stores?
I have a theory that people who like food, love going to supermarkets. They’re GRRR-EAT!!!! Amirite? It satisfies a different type of craving that is less related to hunger and fully relies on the concept of instant gratification. For me, going to the supermarket is the ultimate in relaxing and a great way for me to chill out whilst singing along to hits like It Might Be You, or Robbie William’s Angel covered as a cumbia song in Spanish. I mean, it doesn’t get better than that. 70s and 80s music are now considered oldies. I mean, come ON! If they play Rupert Hines, I’ll probably end up buying Coco Lopez, pineapple juice, and rum! LOL. I’m not even into piña coladas! That’s how powerful the supermarket psychology force really is.
We eat with our eyes first.
Package design, it is a form of wrapping something a certain way in order to appeal to certain people. What would food capitalism be if it didn’t rely on food trends, food design, packaging design trends, product development, and product visibility? Cuisine & Co is the private label brand from Disco Supermercados (owned by third-largest retailer in Latin America) Cencosud.
Every food label and package has gone through the process of branding and purpose analysis.
Packaging perception and the product itself are the cutest little neuromarketing twins that you're about to take home for the very first time, again and again. We gleefully pay to be manipulated.
In addition to a product’s visual attributes, food merchandising/product positioning are key. Private label brands. Fine food products and premium aesthetic packaging always sets out to inform and seduce. Foodgasm on aisle 7. Dig this- manufacturers pay what’s called “slotting fees” for product placement in prime locations in the supermarket.
I love to cook at home. Breakfast is smothered and covered. Do YOU cook at home? Hungry? Why wait? Go watch the video and then head out to your supermarket for some personal you-time! Spend a little, live a lot. Guaranteed personality.
