Hey this is a pretty dope video. What’s really good about this video is she explains exactly what she did so it’s really specific. I did high school around 9 years ago. Got 99.50 and am a doctor now (only saying this because I’ve been studying ever since haha). What I’ve realised is everyone tends to gravitate towards certain studying styles. I’m a guy and so I feel like on average we study differently. But anyways here goes: 1. Don’t quit your life for Yr 12. In fact I reckon if you don’t do sport and do extra curricular activities in yr 12 you actually get dumb as fuck and mentally frustrated. Sure sometimes you have to restrict your weekend partying etc but school activities that develop life skills shouldn’t be put on hold 2. I hand wrote my notes. I personally reckon typing notes is terrible lol. Especially for me. It’s really easy to mindlessly type tbh and hard to mindlessly write. Studies have been done about this. BUT IF TYPING WORKS FOR YOU DO IT. NEVER PRACTICE ESSAYS BY TYPING THEM. Always practice essays and exams the way you’re gonna do it in the exam. In school I wrote daily notes and crap but at home I just wrote neat proper summary notes. 3. I realised highlighting doesn’t work at all for me. Instead I made summaries of summaries lol. Just make sure you know exactly what you decided to leave out between them. 4. Heaps of past questions and shit. I had tutoring for 2 out of my 6 subjects. Definitely helped. Not necessary though. 5. Ask your mates from other schools how they’re doing things and study with them. Cos I had this useless mofo for legal studies teaching us once and after I got my score back I realised every other school was teaching stuff way better than my school was. Anyways I hope this helps. Have check lists. Complete those lists. Go HAM in the 2 months before your exam. There’s nothing worse than knowing you could’ve done stuff but didn’t do it. Not because of lack of knowledge but rather because you just didn’t care/we’re lazy. Gun it. Woot

Guys this is the best HSC advice video on youtube I have seen! (and Ive seen a lot) Your advice is comprehensive and totally puts things into perspective. I remember watching this last year when I started HSC and feeling a lot relieved when you used your personal stories on your studying and extra curricular activities to explain how you got through it all. Would highly recommend this video - most of the other hsc advice videos are very generalised and vague.

Lol I did the Queensland system which is completely different but wishing I'd watched this video before Year 12 anyway just for that first tip at least - stay organised lol. I was probably smart enough to get in the low 90's but ended up getting around 86, I tried reasonably hard but my organisation was a bit off, also I honestly reckon teacher subjectivity cost me the small grade difference which would've made the difference at the really competitive school's cohort I went to Not that it matters, because I'll comfortably get into my course (even if I'm a little weirded out how easy the cutoff is) You're beautiful btw, you're welcome to come Brisbane and study anytime ;)

How do you motivate yourself to put in 100% effort all the time?
@ImogenRussell
@ImogenRussell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, I didn't really see it as a choice, it was something that I had to do, so just like getting up in the morning I never thought; I should study or I need to study, for me it was I HAVE to study. I would panic if I didn't have all my homework up to date and I wasn't on top of things. I would stay motivated because I wanted to see what I could achieve, and do the best I possibly could and the only way to find out what I could do was to do my absolute best 100% of the time. I also stayed motivated because it mattered to me, I cared about my result, I wanted to give it my all, and I am a pretty competitive person, I want to get full marks if I can (andI believe anyone can if they put in the work) and I would aim to come first in my exams. I would also set myself goals (e/g come first in this subject etc) and I never give up once I've set myself a goal, I would have something to be working toward. Being motivated is important but you can't always stay motivated, you also have to be disciplined.

DO NOT stress over year 11. As long as you have a satisfactory mark for every subject/unit you are fine. If you get an A+ in History, a C- in Legal and an E in PE, it DOES NOT MATTER in the long run. All of your grades and test/exam marks go towards nothing in relation to your ATAR. You just need to make sure you pass your units, whether it is with E grades or not, pass them. That’s your only worry in year 11.

This really stressed me out for year 12. I'm in year 10 at the moment, and literally don't have much of a motivation to study. I know it's important, but i'd much prefer be doing other things like watching Netflix, and then stressing at the last minute because I didn't do an assignment on time or hardly studied for a test. And I guess if i'm not getting into a good study cycle now, that I may not be able to study well or have any motivation when I get to year 12. Any tips for motivation and trying to get into good study habits now would be much appreciated :)
@ImogenRussell
@ImogenRussell 5 жыл бұрын
Sahra Marchese hey don’t stress you’re only in year 10!! Honestly you don’t need to worry, try to pick up good habits throughout year 11, and hopefully year 10 if you can but at the end of the day this year is just year 10 so it’s ok but that makes it a perfect time to start good habits. If you are struggling with motivation , set yourself some goals, what do you want to achieve ? Even study goals like doing 1 hour of work after school. Write down your goals, and hold yourself accountable. Give yourself rewards like watching Netflix after you finish your work. Think of why you want to do well, do you have a course or career you want to get into that needs a specific mark? It’s ok if you have no idea I’ve learnt that most grown ups still don’t really know what they want. Create yourself a study or homework timetable or planner that includes time for Netflix or doing nothing ... remember that if you do the work and stop procrastinating then you won’t have to experience that last minute panic and stress so do it to avoid this and keep mentally sane! You might have to be disciplined to yourself and force yourself to do these things but eventually you will just build good habits and it will get much easier and be normal for you! This is why it is so important to choose subjects you actually enjoy so you are able to work on them and study for them without it being excruciating! Seriously pick things that matter to you and you might even enjoy it !

I’m having a bit of trouble navigating the NESA website and finding syllabus’ and modules and all of that stuff and kind of struggling with where to start. I know you’re super busy with training and uni starting back but I was thinking that could be another really valuable and well received video☺️ also a question, you talk about critical questions a lot. Are they exclusive to PDHPE or are they in every subject? Also are they the same thing as inquiry questions?

I'm not in year 12 so the HSC related tips won't work for me yet but the tips like doing the summaries every day and making a 'bible' for each subject before the exam will definitely help. I was just wondering how many hours you studied a day when it wasn't exam period. Thank you for all your help
@ImogenRussell
@ImogenRussell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, I didn't count how many hours I would study for, I just made sure everything I had to do was completed, so it would depend based on how much work we had to do. But basically most days I tried to do around an hour before school, and then maybe an hour before training and a few more hours after training, it would really depend on how much homework I had to get done each day!

NR Gaming It’s never too early! But I’m in year 9 myself and you might get burnt out, thus you will lose motivation and energy by the time you’re in year 12. Just take it easy and try to incorporate some of this stuff into your life

how did you study throughout the year for assessments/tests ? Cause I did a year 12 this year and wrote my summaries to prep for the assessments but it didn’t really help for the end of year exam, so wondering how typing your summaries helped you remember stuff for sacs/assessments?

Writing is everything! Seriously! I got 100% on all my tests because I would rewrite my notes and study guides over and over again. It is tedious but whenever I used this tactic, I would know that I would get 100% for sure! To make this process less tedious, I started extremely early so I would have more time to rewrite my notes. Also, make sure you understand every concept. If you don't, don't be afraid to ask your teacher questions. Overall, writing is everything!!!

Thanks for this it was very helpful x I was wondering when you do notes at school in class do you write in a workbook or on loose leaf in a binder so you can offload notes etc.
@ImogenRussell
@ImogenRussell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, I tried both throughout year 12 and either way works, I think i found loose leaf sleeves easier throughout the year and then I used books to study I don't really remember how I felt about each now though but definitely books for studying, maybe try something different for different subjects to see what best works for you

Such a helpful video. Takes a lot of weight off for the upcoming hsc. How come you didn’t use flash cards? Just interested as I found them helpful for my year 11 exams
@ImogenRussell
@ImogenRussell 5 жыл бұрын
I did use flashcards for some earlier exams, like half yearlys! I actually found them pretty good too! Bibles were pretty much the same as flashcards just written in a book, I guess when you're studying for trials and HSC there's a lot of content which would be difficult to fit onto flashcards.

Just watched this because I'm heading into year 11 this year and I was just wondering whether you used loose leaf paper or books to take notes and do work in your binder for school? Not quite sure which is the most effective or how to write on loose leaf in class?? Thanks for all your help and tips though, honestly the best one these videos! :)

Thank you!! Honestly I did a mix of both for different subjects and changed throughout the year depending on what I found to be the most beneficial. Sometimes typing during class may be easier as you can keep up with things being said and not miss important points. However when studying and doing homework definitely hand write! x

So I'm doing my HSC this year and I'm already 1 term in. I wanted to know if you listened to music while you studied or studied in silence? Also, did you have breaks other than eating because studying for more than 3 hours straight does not go well for me ahahaha. Anyway, i found this video so helpful and you literally gave me hope for the hsc. Thank youuuu xoxoxox
@ImogenRussell
@ImogenRussell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, no music I found it could be a bit distracting. And I liked to study in chunks of a few hours because I found it more productive so I only really had eating or training breaks (or bathroom breaks). But everyone is different! If you find consecutive hours too much give yourself more frequent small breaks e.g a 15 minute walk, doing a different activity for a bit like reading, literally anything, just find out what works for you as you do things. Don't stress too much, you've got this!!

Also, what did you do to prepare during the Christmas holidays? Im in year 12 at the moment (on holidays) an I have no clue what I’m supposed to be doing. Do people actually study now ahah? Thanks so much

Hey, I'm in year 12 right now as well and I'm making notes for all I did in Term 4 (which is basically our first term of year 12) I think its really important you start your notes now and study them so you're not behind when term 2 starts next year! I'd also recommend to do dot points for summaries, I'm not sure what she did either but as long as you refer to the syllabus such as where it says "students learn to"; make sure you can answer that part.
@ImogenRussell
@ImogenRussell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, so my summaries were structured following the syllabus, so each dot point would be a heading and I would write notes in dot point form mostly, sometimes paragraphs, and I would include diagrams and practice HSC question for whatever topic I had summarised and then when it came to exams I had these notes to help me on top of other things (the summaries were my main notes but we also got other material sources which were really helpful) xxx During these summer holidays I just made sure I was up to date with every thing we had done in the first term of year 12, finished all my homework (our teachers gave us holiday work) and had all my summaries completed and up to date, and read the book we were studying in English (1984 which i loved lol) so when school started back I was on top of it all. You don't need to be studying really, studying is most important for upcoming exams to revise (no point studying something if you will forget it again by exam time) but its definitely a good idea to have practice HSC questions answered for whichever topics you have covered (which would be good to do as part of your summaries) but definetly these holidays are a good time to go to the beach and have fun (just make sure you are on top of everything) in all honestly most people at school didn't do the holiday homework and i don't know if anyone studied in these hols, I just made sure i did what i said above but these holidays weren't intense like the ones throughout year 12 (closer to exams/ assessments) are.

Really inspired me for my vce (im from victoria), currently in year 11 and i feel somewhat prepared but also worried about the stress and workload that's to come. Thanks for the tips. As well as all these things, did you also take notes in class as you normally would, and then add some to summaries afterwards?
@ImogenRussell

Thank you! And yes, my summaries were info complied from all different sources - notes taken in class, textbooks, resources from our teacher, my own notes, etc. Try not feel worried about it, there's no point pre stressing about being stressed! Just try your best to stay organised and on top of everything and there's no need to be stressed, you've got this!

nothing really prepares you for year 11 but all you have to remember is none of it goes towards your atar, i used to roll my eyes at everyone who said this to me but its so true. year 11 is all about finding out what study method works for you, so experiment in year 11 and it honestly makes you feel so prepped for year 12. all i can say is dont burn yourself out in year 11 because it HURTs
