I’m a 22 year old full time artist- I didn’t finish school, also bc COVID, and once you’re able to explore your local art scene (COVID pls leave soon) you’ll be able to see that a TON of artists just kind of “wing it” when it comes to starting! You’ll also realize that even though you feel you have a lot to learn, there are plenty of people that know less than you that are successful just because they put themselves out there. You’re on the right path, SO talented, and from artist to artist- I BELIEVE IN YOU (and truthfully I feel like I always learn something new from your videos!) Edit: just wanted to add that staying home all day really IS so easy to do, but as artists, it’s so vital to prioritize connecting with the outside world! My favorite work days are when I go and sit at a park, or drive to the beach and just art it out. I also find so much inspiration in nature and around other people, that if I stay inside too long, my work tends to suffer! Sending love Matthew! You’re amazing!

a recommendation for those stubborn paint tubes: get one of those rubber jar grip things! (you know for like opening jars😂) and keep it with your paints to open them. This has saved me so many times! Also whenever my paint tube popped and leaked i just duct tape it lol

A method that I find very helpful for opening stuck paint tubes is letting the top sit in warm/hot water for a couple minutes, drying it off, and then twisting it open. It works pretty much every time!

Okay, so I got this in my recommended and wow. I'm honestly very impressed with you as an individual. You're 18, not going to college and working as an artist. And you're making it work ! You have a seemingly healthy enough life, physically and mentally, and that impresses me so much. AND LOOK AT THAT ART ! If that's not incredible I don't know what is ! Honest, I only just found out about you, but I respect you so much already. As a 16-year-old that just came out of high school with a lot of mental health issues and is nowhere near self-reliant, independent or confident, I look up to you a lot. I mean it. ( It doesn't help that because I kinda failed graduating but was given a special chance to take back the exam in september, which I thankfully passed, all my plans for this year are voided. It involved travelling as well, so yeah, thanks, COVID. Now I'm just trying to fix myself up to a working level, because I need to justify my gap year by having a solid project for the year... which right now, I don't have, and I'm worried that I'm going to get my mother in trouble... )

You need to get a set of pliers to keep with your oil paints. The top getting stuck will happen again. The pliers will allow you to open them without using your teeth. Also, always push the paint from the bottom up and fold the bottom as you use it. This will prevent your tubes from cracking, and ensure you will not waste paint. I hope you find this tip helpful. It has helped me over the years.

Three things: I loved this video! Hues are when the main color is mixed to create a darker shade/value while tints are the main color mixed to create a lighter shade/value. If you can't open your paint tubes USE A WRENCH.

To check if your oil paint is dry yet - wipe the canvas with a paper towel or cloth with some paint thinner on it- if its 'dry' the paper towel shouldn't show much of any residue. Easy way to check.

For example, I am in the south and there is only ONE museum in my entire state.
