I have a '16 T4R SR5 Premium; bought it new and have 145K miles on it. The best thing about the 4Runner that you will cherish most is nothing ever breaks. Keep the fluids, filters, tires and brakes in good shape and it will never let you down. The engine, transmission, and 4WD system are time tested and virtually bulletproof. One thing you should become comfortable with is emergency braking; due to the softer off road suspension, the front end of the 4Runner nosedives during hard breaking and can be startling the first time, but the truck stays stable. Just practice it a few times in a parking lot. Have fun; it will take you most anywhere you want to go.

Appreciate your honesty and passion! There is no better suv on the road than a 4Runner. It was sad day when I had to trade my 2015 SR5 to get a van for the family. Fortunately I’m getting back into a TRD ORP this week 😊

Great video scenery. I just bought a 2023 version (still waiting for delivery), and plan to also do the blackout. You did the review perfectly in a way my wife would accept. She hears me blather on about specs and stuff that goes over her head. I'm impressed with your real world approach to it.

Nice 4Runner, I think it will go just about anywhere, the way it is now. The buttons and knobs on overhead console is called Crawl Control, will help you in tough spots. Find some 4Runner groups to show you how to use it. Bigger tires will probably cost you bad fuel mileage. But, go 4 wheeling with what you have 1st. They say you should never go 4wheeling alone, if you do, don’t get too creative, this takes some skill sometimes.

Guess the algorithm gods put your channel in front of me because we both are learning about our 4Runners. I bought mine last year (a 2022 Trail Edition in Army Green) and I've been upgrading it since. Yes, you probably will want larger tires (it just looks better) a 2 inch lift is more than enough to clear 95% of all trails (it's what I got, and it's pretty tall as is) be careful making your truck super heavy, it will turn in to a slumbering monster on the trail, and you will want to drive it less as a daily (don't get caught in all the hype of all the stuff you can attach on the roof or how tough it all looks) I originally wanted to buy a TRD Pro, and I could afford it. But when the market went crazy last year, every dealer here in SoCal wanted $15,000 above MSRP. I couldn't do that on principle. So, I went with a basic Trail edition, and I've been happily making it better and better every day. Now is even better than a TRD Pro, in my humble opinion. Good luck with yours, and have fun learning and making mistake as you grow with your truck!

10:37 please learn about the 4x4 system. The 4 wheel drive needs to be engaged from time to time (once a month is good) to keep the system operating normally. The gears can get locked into place if unused. KZbin has lots of vids to show you how. 👍

Got the same truck. My only regret is not getting kdss. I really should have gotten the tire and rim combo added on. I will defiantly upgrade to the trd pro fox shocks. Other than that I'm happy. Lift kits and all that Not necessary imo, anything above what 4runner trd pro shocks are will cause wear and tear on multiple components including differentials. People can argue all they want. I know this as a fact.

Hmmmm, now you've given me reason to rethink my plan. I like sitting up a little higher than the 4R sits. I'm coming from a 2014 RAM 1500, so I'm down-sizing in all categories. Being that she's (RAM) almost 10 years old, and I want to still be able to get some decent $ for her, and finding that a similar size and packaged pickem-up is going for more than I want to spend (I can't believe what they are asking for a pickup these days!), I decided to go with a vehicle I always admired, the 4R. I had a Honda Passport years ago, and they were very similar to the 4R, and I loved that vehicle, so the 4R will be like seeing an old friend again. Think I'm going to have to talk to my dealer about the best way to gain some height without sacrificing other components in the suspension. I'm still going to go with more aggressive rubber than the stock tires. I live in NE Ohio, and we get some bad snow and ice from time to time, and my driveway is an uphill climb and requires good tires and 4WD if it snowed bad before I could clear it. Thanks for your comment, you may have saved me from making a bad mistake. Peace.

Funny thing; my wife and one of my son's bought Jeep Wrangler's at roughly the same time about 5 or 6 years ago, maybe about 3 or 4 months apart. It took about a week for them to find out that there is something of a cult Jeep following out there. They told me that every time they passed another Jeep on the road, the driver would hold up the peace sign, much like bikers when they pass, give the "down-low" wave. I'm waiting for my 23' 4R Off-Road Premium to arrive at my local dealership. I'm told it should take about another 5 weeks to get here. So, of course I've been doing a lot of researching in the meantime, and one of the things that I discovered is that there seems to be a 4R cult similar to the Jeep cult. Though "our" group doesn't seem to have a secret handshake, or sign, there most definitely seems to be a genuine 4R loyalist group out there. I have to say, it is absolutely amazing the mods these creative people come up with. Most seem to be for off-roading and car-camping, and it seems that the 4R is very capable in those venues. Kat, I think once you throw a mattress in the back, you'll find plenty of room for you to sprawl out. Even with that 1' of space taken up by the seat, I don't think you are so tall that your feet will hang over the end of the bed, so to speak. I don't plan on doing much car-camping and I'm definitely not going to do any heavy off-roading. I like the 4R because I like being in more of a truck than a car. I like sitting up higher (although I'll still probably lift her up at least 2" and put some more aggressive rubber on her) I like the storage capacity (great for taking my two pups out for a day) I like the look, it's still somewhat boxy, not so curved in its lines and has an aggressive appearance. I'll do some lighting upgrades and perhaps ditch that dated Head-Unit and put something more up-to-date in. Yeah, it's not great for towing, but it can be done. You shouldn't let the cult deter you from doing that if that is what you want to do. The 4R has a free-spirit aura about it; a break free from the crowd attitude and do it your way approach. It's an extremely versatile vehicle, take advantage of it and go with what you feel. There's a lot you can do with a 4R. Godd luck in your adventures and stay safe and aware of your surroundings at all times. Peace.

Fun video, and I love the honesty re: nuts & bolts knowledge. I go heavy on the feels, while then diving into the nuts & bolts. I’m a guy, I can’t help it. 😂 Re: towing: I’m sure you’ve seen Tails of Wanderlust on KZbin…she towed her Airstream Basecamp with her ‘Yota 4Runner, and while she acknowledged it’s towing downsides, also towed it everywhere. I’m a photographer, and set up at shows/festivals across the country. So I have to keep my gear inside the vehicle, and I am getting a rooftop tent for the times I’m sleeping on the road. I may eventually decide on a teardrop trailer for sleeping, but that’ll be primarily if I age out of crawling on top of my vehicle 🤣😂 Hoping you get out and get some camping in!

This is WHY you need a female to review a vehicle. (yes I went there hope I didn't offend all the activists) They are so meticulous when it comes to the necessities of everything outside of the mechanics of a vehicle like what space you need for certain trips, where the accessories or add-ons are for convenience. I sometimes neglect such things or take them for granted and only think about engine when buying a car. Great video!!

@@katvagabond Good luck! One thing that helps is to have something in the rear cargo area to make it perfectly flat. I have the sliding cargo deck, so my floor is perfectly flat. I'm also a side sleeper, so I end up naturally tucking my knees up a little bit, which is probably why I fit so well. If I laid on my back completely stretched out, I would not fit comfortably without removing the rear seat bottoms. I'm probably going to do that this season though, just for a little bit more storage.

Very cute video. Yes I’m a guy. Here’s a little secret the hood scoop is not functional. Just looks good but does nothing. With the off road package you have a very capable off road vehicle. Using the “little thingy” you can shift into 4 wheel drive high when your driving just pull it straight back. Ok to use some muscle. Don’t be going faster than 55 mph. If you feel you need better traction. Stop the vehicle. Put transmission in neutral pull the little thingy straight back. Then push it over to the right then straight up. This is called 4 low. You can’t do as fast in this mode though. The while in 4 low you can push the locking rear differential button and that will take care of most of the needs for traction. Practice doing those then you can advance to even more capabilities that amazing vehicle has. One word of caution don’t use the 4 wheel little thingy on dry pavement.. Now a word on tires. I like the 17 inch tires and I have no plans on changing my tire size. The bigger the tire usual comes with the bigger the price. Enjoy the vehicle and don’t be afraid to use it. That’s why you bought it. By now I’m sure your the expert. Be well.

I’ve been trying to decide which trim level of 4Runner to buy for my wife and I for awhile now. As a daily driver, do you like how the Off-Road Premium rides on road? For car camping, have you thought about using a cot? Saw a video where someone used an REI Kingdom cot and it looks like it raises up above where that seat folds down. Might be a simpler solution if you don’t want to mess with a full platform.

Kat I cant find it on my computer, but I had an excellent matrix on the features of the Crawl Control system on the TRD Offroad. You can find it on KZbin or the internet. The 4Runner Offroad model has one of the best 4WD systems Toyota offers, a great system with the manual transfer case lever and the crawl control system that will get you out of many situations. Take your time and learn all of them, find a spot off road that you cant get into trouble in and try all of the systems. Also I highly advise putting the 4Runner into 4WD at least once a month for 10 miles on a STRAIGHT road, regardless of what anyone says, the 4WD system is not meant to be used on dry, non-slip hard surfaces. Find a straight road, go into 4WD High, pull straight back on the transfer case lever (T/C), do this under 40 MPH to be on the safe side. Get back with us here if you have any questions. You have one of the best 4WD vehicles made today, the only one better is the Toyota Landcruiser. I own both the 4Runner and Landcruiser and I actually enjoy driving the 4Runner better. Bronc

Interesting about not using 4WD on dry roads. Just curious …. The Limited trim is full time 4WD so what does the limited have mechanically to make it ok to be in 4WD all the time. Learning as much as I can about this beast if a vehicle.
@77bronc14
@77bronc14 Жыл бұрын
@@GiMom19 The Limited, like you said is a full time 4WD and has a center differential type Transfer Case (T/C) that allows the front and rear drive shafts to turn at different speeds such when you are going around a curve. The other 4WD models are different, they have a 2 speed T/C instead. The output speed of the front and rear driveshafts, from the transfer case, is the same, so no slippage. In a straight line, this is fine, but as you start to turn, the front and rear wheels will turn at different speeds therefore binding up the drive shafts. When you are on slippery surfaces, ie: mud, snow, sand, etc, the wheels will slip and the binding will be minimized. So, when I am on a straight road, I will put the T/C on my TRD Offroad 4Runner into 4WD High, engage at a speed less than recommended, I think the manual says 50 MPH maximum, I will do this around 30 MPH and run this way as long as the road is straight. This will lubricate the T/C and exercise the 4WD system. And while we are talking, on any 4WD vehicle, it is also a good idea to keep the tire pressure the same all the way around, so the operating diameter is the same for all the wheels.

@77bronc14
@77bronc14 Жыл бұрын
@@GiMom19 I think the TRD Offroad Premium is the best model 4Runner they offer. It has an outstanding off-road system, mechanical/shift operated transfer case, locking rear differential and you are getting a 4Runner that is bascially a TRD Pro for 15-20K less cost based on the current pricing insanity. As far as the suspension, I live in Louisiana and all of the Toyotas in this region are managed by Gulf States Toyota and I have never seen a KDSS 4Runner. The XREAS is on the Limited model only. IMO, the standard TRD Offroad suspension system is all you really need, especially if you are going to do a suspension upgrade. The Limited is a nice model, I also have a 2020 Toyota Landcruiser and the Limited is a mini-Landcruiser that is why I did not get a Limited. This is my second 4Runner, I had a 2015 Trail Premium which was the same as the current TRD Offroad Premium.

Hahaha love your video. I’m a female and getting the exact same 23 TRD POR in Lunar Rock when it arrives in two weeks. Im in the exact boat as you are knowledge wise. One thing I do think I want to upgrade first is the oil filter housing thingy hahahaha. I just learned about the 4x4 high and low and traction control. Pretty handy. I’ll be keeping up with you cause we will be operating at the same time and probably similar stuff. Fun times!

Be careful on the oil filter upgrade....I have heard some negative feedback. Talk to your dealer about this and make sure there are no warranty implications...

Agree, change all the interior bulbs to LEDs The exterior headlights and fog lights on the 2022 are already LEDs. Put LED reverse bulbs in and IMO the brake lights dont need LEDs. You can buy the interior LED kit from Precision LED or other companies. I would advise against the $20 no name kits on Amazon. Spend the extra money and get quality.

Hi... You are so lovely and the report is really amazing... 4runner is a stunning car but ya the steps are not in the position... In addition., I never liked the leather of the seats... They look so cheap... Why toyota has not used clothes for the seats instead of the leather... But still incredible car... Tough for off road... Good luck

Tales of Wanderlust towed an Airstream behind her T4R OR for years. Did you measure the distance? Is it more since the 4Runner is larger than the RAV4

Love Tails of Wanderlust! And yes, well, I laid in it, and I have to lay diagonal to fit now, whereas in the RAV4 I didn’t have to lay diagonal.

U have to get the SR5 where the back seat folds down with out pulling the seat up ,, & add the trd off road package for $4,500 to the SR5 after u get the SR5, Roseville Toyota in california installs accessories like off road package . . then the twin mattress should fit ... OR u have to get the 2025 with the bigger cab 6in longer and 2in wider & take a chance on the turbo and new powertrain that has failed in tundra etc,etc,etc. or u can just buy a short twin for like a motor home or camper trailer from a mattress store & not do any of it... lol's. 🏳‍🌈🎌

@@VeryCoolAlan depends on what you like to do and what you can afford! The 4Runners are pricey and guzzle the gas - the RAV4s are so capable and easy on the gas tank, especially the hybrid. I LOVED my RAV4, and I miss it. But the 4Runner will take me on so many adventures.

MPG seems to be the big issue, get a Toyota Hilux it gets incredible MPG and it's so bullet proof I've seen someone put one on top of a 20 story building that got demolitioned and afterward they drove it off into the sunset. All it had was dents and shattered glass.
