You seem so happy when running trails. Those trails looked beautiful. :)

I'm so jealous. Looks like you guys had a great time! I only wish more of my friends found running (at all even) a couple times a day with maybe a long run as one to be awesome. They usually just want to go out and eat then drink a bunch of alcohol and repeat haha. Your food choices are goals! The companies you plug are all worth it from what I've tried. Can't wait for the torrent! Best of luck and enjoy your trip! And yes the smoke is always in the face it seems like 😂

Kind of neat seeing those kinds of trees at 10400ft. Where I live the trees are all small/stunted or non existent at that altitude. The treeline itself is around 10.5-10k ft. Wind forecast permitting I'll be up at 11.5k on Friday for another Whitney training adventure!

Hey Sage, great video as always. Curious, when you do a med or long trail run at altitude, do you care at all about pacing or do you place more emphasis on time on feet?

@Vo2maxProductions6 жыл бұрын
I don't cary anything. I've only seen about 5 bears in the last 5 years trail running. They are usually small black beers and they are terrified of me and running away as fast as possible! Actually I saw one really big black bear while I was running with Dave Laney at WS100 around mile 17 once too....but he was also very scared of us!

When you were training for road marathons you said you ran 100 mile weeks. During your mountain train do you do less mileage or the same?
@Vo2maxProductions6 жыл бұрын
generally a little less. Road marathons 120mpw used to be my sweet spot. For trails/mountains I could do almost the same, but 100-110 mpw with lots of climbing (15,000'-20,000') seems to be better for me now. Maybe when I go back to racing long ultras over 100km I'll look to run over 120-130mpw on the trails again. The training time/duration can be much longer though due to the climbing, high altitude and trail technicality.

Sage, what would you estimate your average calorie intake to be? As you know, a lot of runners on KZbin do these 'What I eat in a day' videos and often they're taking in 3,500 calories per day. I've even seen 4,500 calories for someone. These are mostly younger high school/college guys who are running 100km a week. Are these figures exceptionally high or fairly average?
@GoinGorrilas1236 жыл бұрын
Elliot Nolan That’s sounds quite reasonable for someone of that age and activity level.
@elliotnolan91356 жыл бұрын
Man, I'm 27 and only run 60km a week but I still can't really imagine eating that much with the increase in mileage..
@Vo2maxProductions6 жыл бұрын
on that day it might have only been 3500-4000...but I probably lost weight (I don't count). I'm sure some days I've gotten close to 4500-5000 but usually not. It's not that hard to easily eat over 3000 calories....most Americans probably do!
@elliotnolan91356 жыл бұрын

nice video! Just an info, if the summer shower was reflecting the light from the sun, it wouldn't warm up the water inside ;)
@Vo2maxProductions6 жыл бұрын
yeah I had it backwards in the video...it was supposed to have a clear plastic side facing up...then the "reflective side" would be directing the energy back into the 5gal of water.

love these day in a eating video. More please! Always curious as how you eat so much while staying lean
@Vo2maxProductions6 жыл бұрын
that was actually a pretty light day of eating for me. I mean I weigh 145lbs and I have a base metabolism of probably close to 1500-1800 calories. Then add in the running calories (at least 1600-1800 more) and you are well over 3000 calories. I probably lost a little weight that day though.
@ewadym6 жыл бұрын
Hello Sage, I'm usually watching all your training videos but I didn't find the answer to one aspect: as a matter of running technique, when you have to change the pace (be it downhill/uphill, or different running workouts), should it be based on increasing/decreasing the cadence or the stride length? or both. And thank you for your enthusiasm.
@johnreeves38766 жыл бұрын
Generally keeping cadence is best imo, I like to lower the stride length to keep the cadence while applying similar effort. I also tend to switch to a more gliding gait(minimal vertical bounce) as opposed to long strides when transitioning to hills.
@Vo2maxProductions6 жыл бұрын
depends on how steep the hill is, how far your race/run is, and how technical a trail might be. Generally cadence will naturally drop a bit going uphill (could even slow to "powerhiking") and speed up a bit going downhill. A fast downhill cadence is actually really key to keep under center of gravity and to minimize impact force. On technical trail it can be very different (as well as trying to run very fast downhill at the end of the race....or during a short intense race where a longer stride could be used)
@ewadym6 жыл бұрын
thank you, I'll keep practicing and try different approaches on the same segment. I got too obsessed with the 180 cadence rule for any type of surface and angle, hope to get rid of it

Anything where you exploit another being is not vegan. Also you could do some research and find some pretty disappointing points about the industry. If Honey is fine too eat, then go take it yourself, doubt you will as they will sting you, because they protect there honey. That's a clear sign that it isn't ours.Being vegan is about causing as no harm to others. Also, you quite rightly said it's 'stealing' stealing in the 'real' world is an offence!

I saw deer on my last trail run too. But it wasn't such an exposed area. Sandy must be spoiled..."summer shower"? Or is that for Sage? Are you hiking or car camping? Looks like car camping. Anyway, got a new challenge for Sage's "Any Surface, Any Distance" pledge. Actually, two challenges. Here they are: The Pacific Ocean Crossing, and the Atlantic Ocean Crossing. Since water is a surface, although a fluid, and oceans are basically salt water. And salt adds flotation. So not as hard as a 100 miler on top of the swimming pool water. But 100 miles is too short. So cross the whole ocean. You may say you can't do that. But "Any" means any. And "Any surface" means any surface! So kudos. Remember, Jesus walked on water. So you can run on ocean water. And there is scripture to back it up too. For the doubters out there. BTW Hoka is tooting "Any Terrain, Any Distance". Was watching this because I was at level ZERO the last couple of days. And wondering what was the cause of it. Which would require some fancy scientific analysis... Hm...I did get sunburned and dehydrated last Monday...but was much better on Wednesday. Then hit ZERO on Thursday and Friday morning.

This isnt the point of the video. The same goes for her videos if Sage is in them. Sometimes I wonder of social media like instagram has put unrealistic expectations of how people should act in everyday life. I like their channels because they are relatable, down to earth, and it isn't full of overhyped nonsense much of what you see elsewhere in social media.
