I grew up in a house where we did meal planning and 1 weekly shopping trip. My parents divorced when I was young and my mum was always more financially well off than my dad so she got to spend more on ingredients and make most meals fresh where my dad did the "make a pot big enough to feed and army" and then eat it the rest of the week, but neither would ever leave stuff in the fridge for very long and if I wanted to try making something I needed to plan out what I would use the left over ingredients for to justify to them buying it. As a result my fridge is near empty without the weekly veggies and I know exactly what's in my pantry at all times which I am very thankful for

LOVE love love these types of videos you do. Thank you for all the company and inspiration! I'd love to see more of the "batch cook and freeze" type options highlighted. It's also just the two of us, we get bored of things quickly, and I have health issues that make cooking every day not a guaranteed thing. I love having something in the freezer that can be pulled out to thaw for that night, and have been doing more of that lately. Such a lifesaver!

Yes, I don't know the best way to freeze things. Many frozen foods taste weird to me, but I do have ARFID. Not sure if it's just me or I'm doing something wrong.
@june-onthewestcoast
@june-onthewestcoast 12 күн бұрын
@@DirseCT i have arfid too and have found better utilizing my freezer helps so much w making sure i'm eating enough!! i think it's so personal to figure out what bothers you and how to work around it. i have a lot of thoughts about foods "decomposing"/rotting when they're in the fridge, so i can't stomach eating foods that i froze after several days in the fridge. but if i make extra and freeze it right away, i have no issues with it. i have a lot of texture issues too, so it takes some trial and error to figure out what defrosts okay and what recipes i need to use certain frozen ingredients in. if taste changes bother you, maybe it's worth experimenting with different storage containers and trying to freeze different foods/ingredients to figure out what works for you? it's so frustrating to try things and have it not work and feel like you're wasting food that way, but over time it's helped me so much to eat a lot better and be less reliant on heavily processed/highly packaged foods!

Love this! I’ve been very caught up in always trying to make new recipes that require all of these new ingredients that I don’t end up using for other meals so then I end up wasting the excess when it goes bad. I’m also on a low buy and trying really hard to use what I have and eat more simple or repetitive meals etc. Please make more videos like this! Would be interested in hearing your tips for freezing batches (what can be frozen what can’t and for how long, how to reheat, etc.). Thanks!

That sweater!! 😍 loved this video. I discovered this recipe for kimchi tofu stir fry that I’m loving for using up those giant (and cheap) Asian market kimchi jars. You just fry tofu chunks 4 mins per side then add chopped green onions and kimchi (approx 2/3c but follow your heart) and then a few mins later deglaze with a sauce of kimchi juice, a teaspoon of sugar (agave worked well), and soy sauce- roughly 1T soy to 2T juice. Can add water as needed simmer until it’s where you like and serve on rice. It’s so basic but so delicious

Yeah my cookbook of hers is called “Big Vegan Flavor. I kind of wish it was called Rainbow Plantlife the way Happy Herbivore branded all her stuff. This cookbook is so creative! She has a lot of great ideas, I’ll have to try that salad. I think her tofu recipes are so creative and had my mind running with them after I flipped through that section. So far everything I’ve tried has been very tasty. And yeah I heard that Colorado has been freakishly warm so a nice cold salad meal would be a lovely refresh. I’m going hard on citrus season. Eating some oranges and grapefruit with Tajin. Really hitting the spot. Plus I’ve been making some pomegranate+shoestring beat salads with spring mix and arugula, and sunflower seeds. So good. But yeah just had to comment that Big Vegan Flavor is a huge success for modern Vegan cookbooks.

The passion and conviction of a vegan activist! As I watch this video, Im reminded of the power of personal choices and the impact they can have on our world. The speakers dedication to reducing food waste and living sustainably is truly inspiring. I love how they highlight the benefits of meal planning and food prep - its amazing how much more mindful we can be when we take the time to plan out our meals and make a grocery list. And those noodle salads look delicious! Who wouldnt want a fresh, healthy meal after a few days of relying on freezer meals? The speakers comments about feeling grateful for what they have are also really resonating with me. As vegans, we often focus on the benefits of our lifestyle choices (and there are many!), but its just as important to appreciate and be thankful for what we do have. Im also intrigued by their approach to shopping - only buying groceries once every 5 days? Thats impressive! It takes a lot of planning and discipline, but I can see how it would help reduce waste and save money. Overall, this video has left me feeling motivated and inspired to continue making conscious choices about my food and lifestyle. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences - youre an amazing role model for living sustainably and compassionately!

My ”formula” for budget meal planning is alternating between meals that can pretty much be made from pantry items and meals that require more fresh produce. Any and all leftover veggies are good in a pureed soup, imo it’s just a matter of seasoning. That way it’s not too costly but also there’s enough veggies and I won’t get bored of the inevitably rice/pasta/bean heavy pantry stuff.

I found one way to help with food waste and getting bored of the same meals is to plan cuisine adjacent fresh items- so Mexican and Indian foods might require coriander, onions, tomatoes - or oddly Vietnamese / Middle East - mint, spring onions, parsley I also freeze a lot of half bunches of herbs, particularly coriander, parsley, spring onions - not great in salads, but perfect for livening up some soup etc. I just chop the whole bunch, and put what I’m not using in a freezer bag if it’s not in the meal plan, or in a container for the fridge if it is.

I never waste food and don’t really understand how or why wasting food happens. I think about the meals we are going to have and what I need for them and buy that and then use it . We are vegetarian and leaning increasingly vegan although we keep chickens ( they are my best friends) so will always have eggs. We grow nearly all our own veg and fruit ( except bananas) so freeze a lot. In the Summer I make huge quantities of veg soup and freeze it. Love your porcelain sweater, the collar looks perfect ,are you knitting it in cotton ? I am still finishing up some xmas gift knits ! Just finished the sari Nordlund poet socks and am making the caitlin Hunter alpine bloom hat for the third time after someone asked for it having seen one I made ( which felt really nice) in a beautiful blue and white shetland wool. Then I will get back to a colourwork jumper for myself by Jessica McDonald , nearly finished the yoke. Your bread looks amazing. I would love to make sourdough. It’s too cold in my house now I think for a starter and proving. I think you are British. I am too, living in France.

Would you ever consider selling your sweaters? They are absolutely beautiful. I would personally value them at $200-$300+, I hope that isn't offensively low. Regardless, you are talented and I love seeing all the different projects you do!
