I saw the thumbnail and thought, wtf is going on with Paige. What is interesting about futons??! Now I understand, you made me completely rethink the whole bedroom situation. Actually so much room to be gained. Now I need to research good futons and also try and convince my partner about it lol.

Glad to see the shout-out to Futon d'or. I needed a sofa-bed some months ago and ended up buying one from them - a big draw for me is that both the frame and the mattress were locally made, with the mattress being made by a company on-island and the frame coming from a small company in Sherbrooke. I considered buying something from Wayfair, but for something where the mattress was actually replaceable and not affixed directly onto the body (read: disposible) Wayfair was about the same price, not to mention probably lower quality and manufactured who knows where. Support your local businesses folks!

I had no idea there was a japanese connection to futons. I didn't expect to learn this today!

I have a sofa-style futon in my Montréal studio apartment. I prefer it because (as you mentioned) it's a lot nicer to have a real bed when you have someone over, but mostly because I'm not on the floor with the mice, which are common in these old buildings. There's a reason why people go for raised beds! That futon stuffing being misshapen material scraps was heinous though 😅

I studied Japanese and I have been so confused as to how these futons have 2 different variants thanks for the video! And personally I initially thought as a futon as the Japanese one not the couch thing…

Another great and insightful video🎉 great food for thought. The only problem with having a mattress on the floor are cold drafts in winter…and make sure you have no mice😂

You sleep with a padding? In my country I sleep on a hard wooden bed

A suggestion. Get egg crate foam. It's rehabs any mattress. You can use a fitted sheet to tuck them down.

Even though I don't have bug issues in my building, I'm still very paranoid about sleeping on the floor. I knew that the Japanese have a tradition of sleeping on "mats" on the floor, but I didn't know they're the original futons.

This is genius. A western bed is effectively pure wasted space 66% of the time. The real Japanese futon makes a lot of sense, there is a probably a business case there. Big Mattress won’t be happy about it though, difficult to charge 5000$ for a futon 😂

These futons will undermine the whole podcast industry. “Canadaland hates him!” But yeah it’s the kids that futons seem most game changing for. They can just grow up with a futon and not know any different, sleep anywhere, have all that play floor space etc.
