True story. For a hobby, I made up a bunch of very simple stickers which said [LIES] in stark black and white block letters and went around sticking them on newspaper boxes. Every night I'd take a long walk, always hitting different streets, and stick [LIES] on every newspaper box I came across. Little did I know that through sheer persistance I had become _iconic._ The newspapers began running articles offering a reward for whoever turned me in, and I discovered later that they were staking out boxes, sometimes all night long, trying to catch me. Once in a long while someone would be nearby when I put a sticker on, and they'd get all excited: _"YOU'RE THE LIES GUY!!!!"_ But to my knowledge, not a single one turned me in. I'm not sure what my point is, except maybe that the simplest, cleanest designs can be very effective if used in the right context.

I'm currently in college studying Visual Design, and I have to admit i'm terrible at logo design... But my teacher always says "add more", "it is too simple", "It is memorable, but it should be better"...? How do I learn to design compelling logos online? My teachers always say "You should already know how to make them" when anybody asks for help.

DOLPHIN JEEP! Reminds me of purple jeep. This gorgeous, 4 door, purple jeep that I kept seeing on one of my commutes a couple months back... I miss seeing that jeep. I think that's my dream car right there, haha. But in all seriousness, I don't design logos terribly often but I've done a few. It's definitely a process trying to come up with something unique, memorable, and attractive. But I have to admit, ugly logos are a guilty pleasure from time to time.

Natimation Studios For the Car is this beautiful, classic corvette stingray, beige. ... the owner painted it beige. It always fascinates me. I just assume its some old guy who bought it retirement and was like "well all my cars have been beige so this one should be too"

What I hate is fancy schmancy expensively produced logos that don’t work at all in mono or small sizes ...makes merchandising with them a real pain and often I end up having to redesign them which seems unfair!

I have a bachelor's degree in graphic design and I hate logos. I think it's the snobbishness in the industry that annoys me most, and I agree that sometimes ugly is great. My business cards are not classy looking at all, but people keep them and pin them on their wall or fridge because I put "laughing boosts your wifi signal!" Most people are like what? The people that get it are like YES I want to work with you.

I gotta be honest, I don’t know if Brad was being a little tongue in cheek throughout the video. I do agree that some logos can walk the same design lines and become lost in the crowd. Chris Do has great video on why brands change from quirky individualistic logo to a more main stream look.

This blandness drives me nuts... i'm currently in my senior year as a graphic design major and truth be told... I don't think i'm going into the field once i'm out... I can't stand it. Bland, boring, corporatized crap fills the void. I honestly feel like as a field Graphic Design is the worst Art Field. Sure it pays well but when I see the types of logos out there I stop and have to imagine what creatively bankrupt person had to design it. Personally I love early 2000s and late 90s logo design and I often just barely pass my classes because I WILL NOT make a 2020 logo for my classes. I know that seems counter productive because i'm paying to be there... but... I am paying to be there... I will do whatever I want with my money and if that means toil away to make an ultimately ok design based on an over saturated early 2000s taco bell logo that gets a 72% because 'it's too complicated' well... then I win. I would much rather scrape by and barely pass sticking to my guns that fall into the rut of the common graphic designer. I used to dream of being a graphic designer but now as i'm wrapping up my last year next spring... I want nothing to do with it. I hate graphic design... and I hate graphic designers (not you of course cause even though I think we would butt heads on several key design principles you seem like a genuine dude not some corporate sellout who changes one or two lines and for a sports team logo and makes out like a bandit.) ______ Story Time: I am from the Milwaukee area and a few years ago (2020) the baseball team The Brewers had their logo 'redesigned'... the dude came in and took their logo from 1993 copied it, turned the baseball in the center of it and added a second line. Literally I could do EXACTLY what he did in about 30 minutes and the guy made bank as he made up this whole story about 'the ball'. The ball is divided into 3 sections one for the team, one for the game, and one for the community. Each of them being an important part of the team and how without one the entire plan would fall apart.... dude scammed millions of people with a 'you matter' corporate mind game and effectively (in my opinion) stole a logo from over 10 years ago, did a deviant art grade modification to it... and made bank. The entire design was 'a combination of the past' pulling aspects from previous designs to make it. I'm sorry but... I don't support this. While I know it was all legal as brewers own/owned all the trademarks and rights to the images used... it still doesn't change the fact that the current logo isn't original at all and replaced a much better logo in my own personal opinion with some contrived manipulative drek. THIS is why I have no desire to become a graphic designer... THIS is where graphic design has fallen in my eyes... I know it's not only like this... but I can't support an industry that not only supports this but encourages it... all of my college instructors were gushing over the 'ingenious' nature of that new logo and how effective it is at what it accomplishes when all I see is some lazy piece of crap where an otherwise more competent and interesting logo once stood. (FYI I'm not a sports guy I don't care about the team my emotions are 100% because of the botched 'art form' of Graphic Design).

sorry i disagree on this video. sometimes logo don't need te be memorable. it just need to give you a feeling of what kind of band/company it is. most logo can become memorable. the Apple logo for example is just the same as "ever other logo" but it memorable because of they marketing. the same can be said about the Nike logo.
@thebradcolbow6 жыл бұрын
I can respect that, I think in some situations you're totally right. All comes down to what you're design's goals are.

Brad Colbow love the animations!! I think you’re right on the goals of the design aspect. I think of logos as a “first impression”. As amazingly memorable as their logo is, I might be scared having the horse paint bucket saw legs company do work for me... but then again, I would probably at least look up their reviews!!
@BarKeegan6 жыл бұрын
Point of a brand (or logo) is to be memorable, otherwise all that livestock would get mixed up
