All of that being said, I love what was added to New Horizons that wasn't in past games! Villagers don't randomly move away anymore. We can add furniture to every square inch of our island, we can terraform... Heck, Happy Home Designer was a *separate* game in the 3DS days. Now it's literally attached to the main island. SO COOL! And as you say, there's plenty of stuff that was added we never had before (I dabbled in City Folk, but the last game I really played a lot was Wild World - and that's a huge difference). But there was also stuff missing or not fully thought through that had lots of potential. And I understand why some are upset by that. Your description is 100% on point with what I think about New Horizons. The best thing about this series was the villagers and their interactions. I have no idea why the devs decided to focus on the decorating instead of polishing and improving the villagers more. They just feel more like trophies than characters now, and that makes me sad since I’ve felt genuine connections to my villagers in Wild World and City Folk. Also what bums me out is that sometimes when I’m roaming in the Internet I will see people that will describe Animal Crossing to those who never played the game as a game where you can decorate your island…and there is no mention of building friendships with your villagers alongside of developing your island. That made me “click” in my brain that New Horizons isn’t really (seen as) a life sim game; In reality it’s like what you said: A design game, and I didn’t buy the game for that. I actually just started playing the first game recently (this was the only Animal Crossing game that I never got a chance to play up until now), and man…I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about decorating lmao. The Cranky and Snooty villagers are actually in character and are sarcastic, snarky, or lowkey throw shade at you the first couple of times you speak to them. I actually felt reactions when the GC villagers spoke to me compared to me having little to no kind of any emotional reaction from my New Horizons villagers speaking to me. I’m hoping that for the next distant Animal Crossing entry the devs will try to re-improve on the villagers, but I’m pretty pessimistic about it, to be honest.

The biggest flaw I absolutely CAN’T stand about this game that stops me from playing it is being restricted to one island per console. Let’s say you want to have a second island where the layout and theme is completely different, you’d have to buy a separate console just to make the island, since that data is stored into the console instead of the game card. It’s even worse when you have siblings that also play this game, and I feel as if it’s just a total cash grab.
@Feverm00n2 жыл бұрын
Especially if Nintendo really cares about the family playing aspect. No kid wants to have to play on an island their sibling controls… especially because the whole experience for a second player is incredibly diminished. I just started playing acnh last month and while I love it a lot I always felt it was lacking so many features… Bulk crafting, hhp terraforming, and more villagers interaction, etc. The game loves to waste an unnecessary amount of your time and the villagers are so bland. I think the thing I hate most about New Horizons right now is that villagers can just barge into your house whenever they want, and SUPER frequently I might add. It makes me not want to customize this house that I spent SO SO SO much time and effort upgrading. I wish you could just put a Do Not Disturb sign on your door or something. I also miss Gracie, Pelly, Phyllis, and Pete. Especially Phyllis' snarky attitude and under her breath roasting. I feel like the villagers are just so cuddly and soft now, like I miss the shade that villagers could throw your way. I feel like the graphics and customization are the only things that are better in this game than in past games. There was so much more to do in New Leaf! Anyway, thanks for listening to me rant. I agree with everything you said, except I really hate terraforming one square at a time. While the DLC is great, it dangles the carrot. Clearly it's not an issue of not having the mechanics in place, they just deliberately want to make it slow and painful. 😂 A couple other pet peeves of mine... Only being able to buy one type of item at a time in the dressing room at Able Sisters; Only being able to buy one item at a time from vendors (Kicks, Sahara, etc); Button mashing your way through the same overly chatty dialogue constantly; Paths not connecting together if they're different; The dreaded cut scene you have to sit through every single time someone arrives or departs an island; Reconnecting to the internet and starting over if you mess up a Dodo code. It also would be nice if it shows what you already have in your storage/inventory when you buy things. If not for all the things you listed and the few things I added, I would play more regularly. But the tediousness of these things and the constant grinding sometimes burns me out. 😥

a sort of minor thing i wish would be added is being able to plan your island before doing things. by this i mean it like how some websites allow you to use the map and decide how you want your island to look. why should we have to use a whole other device to try and get something to plan our island with ? it would help so much with deciding how you want things to go , even if you couldn’t walk around or use the imagine feature like you use for buildings.

If I'm going to dream, I want more refined control over the audio in the game. It has improved but still doesn't properly separate the diegetic music from the hourly themes, and I keep having situations where a speaker and the hourly theme are fighting each other to horrible results. It's even worse when KK is around. I often just wish I could turn off the hourly music, especially when many of the songs just aren't as pretty as they were in New Leaf, and even moreso after hearing them for hundreds of hours each.

Only complaints I have about the game are the blend effect in design editor and the soundtrack. I do all my own original designs and all of the work should be about color choices, outlines, composition, that sort of thing. What happens instead is 80% of the work becomes all the trial and error you have to do to figure out what bleeds into other colors and what doesn't, with seemingly no rhyme or reason, tweeking all 15 colors until they each blend the exact way you want them to. I couldn't just go in and change one color -1 darkness, for example, without throwing off the entire design. Your brain automatically blends an image composed of sharp pixels anyway, so remove the smoothing! 2nd is the hourly music. I've never had a video game OST so bad I had to play the game on mute, because every other game in existence will at least allow you to turn the music off. The game's SFX are fine!

Imo the biggest flaw is definitely no mini games and other objectives like shop upgrades from other games. Once you get bored with decorating you have basically NOTHING to do, there isn't really anything to work towards after the 'tutorial' stage,nook mile stuff is basically just the same boring repetitive stuff and the villagers and NPC's don't have much of an entertaining dialogue either. I've decorated. And decorated. And decorated. Over and over again. Flattened, restarted, the whole nine yards. It's just so boring after a while, all i want is a few minigames to pass time and some form of proper objectives that the player could work towards and look forward to ( and time lock them. Make them actually challenging.I love time traveling but if we had actual store upgrades for example, I'd want to actually work towards them, not accidentally unlock them because i traveled forward a month to visit a different season)

Even if I haven’t played Animal Crossing New Leaf for like 3 months, I’ll still kind of want to go back but sometimes New Horizons can feel a bit like you have to go back so your villages don’t guilt trip you (there more guilt-trippy in ACNL but in ACNH you feel as if you have to make an effort to unlock certain features). For example, just by going on New Leaf, after a couple of days, you can unlock the island and Kapp’n (who is a bit creepy but that’s besides the point). To be honest, I’ve had New Leaf for longer so maybe that’s why I like it more but I’ve had New Horizons for over a year and I still haven’t unlocked terraforming (I’ve just looked up how to do it so I guess I’ll do it soon). Although some characters are annoying, I think I’ve realised what I like about New Leaf; there’s more interactions, whether that’s getting your hair done or working at the coffee shops, there’s always people to see. 🤣

Well, since you asked . . . the big, huge thing I miss from an older game (apart from everything you mentioned already) is drawing constellations, from "Wild World". "New Horizons" gave us an adjustable camera where you can pan up to look at the sky, and there are clearly a lot of stars out at night. They could have made it so we could get Celeste's observatory put back in the museum so we could draw constellations again. Come to think of it, why didn't they bring back the customized museum exhibit rooms from New Leaf? I loved that feature. It was fun putting together additional rooms with different types of furniture that didn't fit the theme of any of the rooms in my house.

My biggest gripe is the inability to see where you are going to terraform/waterscape. The direction of the character is so precise and yet there is no guide. You are editing blind. I also wish that when you are out of "construction mode" you cannot edit custom designs like paths. I can't count how many times I tried to pick something up and erased a custom design square. So frustrating when you are on a roll doing stuff around the island!

It's less a missing from past games, and more a missing in generally all installments; Back in wild world, the villagers had hobbies and such, but generally, there isn't really a lot to DO with your villagers. It's not about getting more personality types, and more so something to actually do with them. Hide and seek in New leaf was fine and all, but it doesn't really add to the characters. I wish they would have taken some of the mechanics in happy home designer into the main game, as a reward for befriending them. They might ask you to put down a specific piece of furniture for them how you'd think it looks best, or ask for a remodel. Something Stardew valley does for a while is giving a sense of progression to befriending characters, both through cutscenes and mechanics. I'd like dialogue choices, things my villagers remember players and even each other by, having one of the jocks jog around with you on the island, and have more meaningful conversations. Invite your animal friends for a sleepover or to cook. Basically building a more nuanced character according to how the player acts, so that even ugly villagers can have more personal attachement.

I don't think the lack of bulk crafting was an oversight, I think they intentionally left it out just to make the pacing slower. It is waaaay too obvious to be an "oversight" that was missed during thousands of hours of playtesting. There is no way not one person said "Hey, it would be great if we could craft multiple fish baits at once." Especially after all the updates, it still doesn't exist, so they left it out for a reason at this point. A very stupid reason.

I think it's almost undeniable that all the prior games in the series are better Animal Crossing titles than New Horizons, purely because they stick to the core of what Katsuya Eguchi intended with the games until he stepped down and the development teams were switched onto New Horizons - a development team who never worked with Eguchi. All prior games have, objectively, more content, depth, detail, love, care, and character than New Horizons, too. New Horizons' new flagship feature was that you can add traditional in-home furniture items into the town environment; this came across as a side feature, not something that resulted from a game supposedly 8 years in-the-making. The other titles didn't need such bonus features to advertise themselves as a whole new product, because their primary intrigue and fundamental quality came in the form of a plethora of intricate detail and attention that made every single day spent in the game feel fresh, alive, distinctive and most of all, interesting. New Horizons is honestly so detached from what Animal Crossing was - and should be - that it's hard to even compare it to previous titles; it's not a mainline game, to me, and feels just as much of a spin-off as Happy Home Designer or Pocket Camp, only more glorified and substantive - with an emphasis on creativity and total, capitalist control over your villages and even town structure. As Tama Hero perfectly stated, New Horizons isn't an Animal Crossing game which appeals to or is built for old or core fans that waited 8 years for the game - instead, it appeals to the new, Tumblr/Twitter crowd of VSCO aesthetic girls that came out of the franchise's fanbase near the end of New Leaf's lifespan, combined with Nintendo's newfound business strategies of releasing unfinished games and slowly, painfully finishing them with free updates overtime. It's important to state that there isn't anything inhernently wrong with the first direction Nintendo took, generally, but from a veteran fan's perspective, this is definitely something which feels wrong. As for the second direction, this is a blatant problem that Nintendo now has, and it's ruining their games and their image - I'd be able to accept New Horizons more if the game was at least finished upon released, but it wasn't, and that led to many of us veteran fans being fed up of the game by the time the massive 2.0 update released. It's extremely disappointing that many of us loyalists waited 7 - 8 years for this game to release, and when we did, we realised the game didn't target our demographic remotely; the fact the villagers are mindless, evidently pre-coded happy-go-lucky robots who have no personality, is all you need to show that New Horizons lacks Eguchi's primary vision for what the franchise was supposed to be in the first place: a game where one can live another life, distracted from the social worries of the real world, and form new relationships with animals that feel authentic and real, in a setting which also feels lived-in, special, unique, and somerhing you feel apart of, not something you have unnatural control of. Animal Crossing is no longer a life simulator game, it's a sandbox game. The simple, conclusive fact of the matter is, New Horizons wasn't built for us veteran fans, and it doesn't seem like that is going to change anytime soon: Animal Crossing is no longer built for us at all, and that's a hard pill to swallow.

This is an extremely well thought out and heartfelt comment. I can totally see where you’re coming from when you say the game feels detached from it’s core, and lacks emotion and meaning when compared to the old animal crossing games. I didn’t personally play the older games, but I know what it feels like when companies change everything about their original concept. However, as someone who doesn’t hold any form of nostalgia towards the older games, and as someone who is into art and design, these are the elements that I like the most about new horizons. The terraforming and crafting options my prime reason for playing the game.

The invisible space around all the items is too large, especially for small items. The spacing annoys me so much, and there are times when I can’t center things. two other big things that literally wouldn’t take much to integrate. bulk buying clothes and a tool damage indicator. like- even changing the sprite, adding a bar- or like have a pop-up saying it’s damaged and will break soon. LITERALLY something so integral for breakable items. hell, even BotW did this. MINECRAFT had this since the beginning- ACNL HAD IT FOR AXES. It just… makes me so mad. Without those, the bulk crafting and upgraded nooks cranny literally makes it annoying to play. Also… not being able to change any of the service buildings outsides makes me a little mad. I 100% doubt it’ll happen but you’re out of luck you want your residents services to look different. Not even the damn roof color.
