Nowadays it seems the development time has been increasing due to the demand in graphics. If you do a Google search of "Animal crossing series release dates", it will show you the gaps in wait time. Animal Crossing could rival PS4 one day, but at the cost of extended development times. I admit New Horizons is a beautifully aesthetic game with it's graphics capabilities with the Switch, but I think much of it hindered potential of what the devs could bring to the game. It made the low poly games seem more attractive in that perspective.

The one major thing you’re leaving out is the other franchise the Animal Crossing team (Nintendo EPD Group 5) works on, Splatoon. Part of the reason why New Horizons ended DLC support was so that they could fully commit to working on Splatoon 3. And before that, Splatoon 2 wrapped up support so EPD 5 could enter full production of New Horizons (beyond the conceptual phase you mentioned). While the overlap between the two IPs isn’t 100%, the 30-40% that the overlap does cover includes crucial staff like lead producer & UI designer. I wouldn’t expect the next Animal Crossing to enter full-scale production until after Splatoon 3: Side Order is released. So at that point, it’ll most definitely be made for the Switch 2.

Even then we still have another year left of updates for Splatoon 3, which does kinda align with Animal Crossing’s about 4 years between releases but once Splatoon 3 is over it’s really all about how much progress the team was able to make on the newest game

Once that expansion is done, EPD 5 can scale down how much staff they allocate towards Splatoon 3 updates & begin working on the next Animal Crossing in earnest. They likely already have a small team conceptualizing the next Animal Crossing game (unless EPD 5’s next project is Splatoon 4), but they probably haven’t entered full production yet.

@@kierenbuckley370 I specifically brought that up (see what I said about the 30-40% overlap), but enough major staff is shared between both franchises that one can’t enter full production while the other is still being actively worked on by most of the team. So until Side Order is finished (Splatoon 3’s post-launch team will likely begin to decline in numbers afterwards), the next Animal Crossing game can’t go full steam ahead with its development. Of course, this assumes that Splatoon 4 isn’t EPD 5’s next project.

Personally I think that we're more likely to see it in another 3 years or so. You have to keep in mind that 2 of the 4 previous games were developed on handhelds, which would make things significantly quicker.

I don't know why people think it will be so long. The 7 year gap between NL and NH is an outlier. The development team began work on it for the Wii U but (obviously) switched to the Switch. I believe we might get a new Animal Crossing game early on in the next console's life.

Unless they made an entirely separate Animal Crossing (or Splatoon) team, I’m not sure EPD 5 could do full scale production for both Splatoon 3 & the next Animal Crossing simultaneously. While Nintendo EPD tends to be fluid in terms of development staff, EPD 5 usually has among the most staff retention between projects (especially projects from different franchises).

To be honest I feel like any change is gonna be big enough to be it’s own game because New Horizons is so unique with its features. Besides that I feel like we can get a game on the Switch. Nintendo has talked about how the Switch will stay for awhile somewhat dispelling Switch 2 rumors. Along with that The AC team worked along side the Splatoon team to make Splatoon 3 and that’s having an update life of 2 years which we have a year left. So we could get a game next year or see trailers of it next year, it all depends on how far the AC team was able to work on the new game while also working on Splatoon 3. And I don’t have enough money for a new console so I just really hope it’s not on one -

Regarding Nintendo statement, all they said was that new hardware wasn’t being factored into their estimates for the upcoming fiscal year. But either way you slice it, they’re running out of big sellers now that Zelda is out. Between that & the leaked specs, the Switch’s successor will likely come out next year. Also, as pointed out in the video, Animal Crossing is a one-per-system franchise. Another entry won’t even be considered until after the Switch 2 launches.

I want another Animal Crossing game sooner rather than later but I also hope it happens sometime after May 2024 because that’s when I’m (hopefully) going to be able to graduate from college and this next year of my life is gonna be super busy. New Horizons was my first time ever experiencing getting a game on release day and I loved it. I hope to do that again with all subsequent Animal Crossing games. I feel like there’s a good chance it will be after May 2024 but I’m hoping it’ll be sometime in 2024 or 2025. If we have to wait til 2027...then I will of course but I hope it comes sooner than that. A new game & console in 2024-2025 just feels right to me but we’ll see.

That depends on if the team chooses to make Splatoon 4 next. If that’s the case, it’ll be a while before the next Animal Crossing. But after the success of New Horizons, I’d imagine that getting Animal Crossing on the Switch 2 as soon as they finish Side Order is EPD 5’s highest priority.

Switch 2 is likely coming sometime in 2024, as they don’t really have a lot of big sellers left regarding software after Zelda (it’s only really 2D Mario at this point). Plus the SoC for the Switch 2 has already been leaked. In relation to Animal Crossing, they’ll likely start working on the next game in earnest after they finish Splatoon 3: Side Order in the next few months. So we could see the next Animal Crossing game as soon as 2025 depending on how much they were able to get done during the partial development phase.

I’m certain we will get some sort of Animal Crossing in year one of the Nintendo Switch successor if they want people to buy it, considering New Horizons was a console seller for a LOT of players AND the best selling original Nintendo Switch game. And considering Splatoon 3 - to me - has had minor updates and is ending in full soon they could be working on something Animal Crossing instead for the next console.

I thought New Horizons was just straight up bad. It essentially just turned Animal Crossing from this fun social sim all about interacting with animal villagers and being a “fish out of water” just living your new life to just a decorating and designing simulator where the animals feel more like decorations themselves than a core part of the game. Even the music doesn’t hit the same, I never paid attention to it in past entries, but it’s noticeable now it’s different… In past games, you felt like you were part of a community within your town. Now, you pretty much just play God and everything is run by you and you alone. I don’t need all of this DIY shtick, tools breaking etc…I just need a chill life simulator. I’ve never generally gone back to play previous entries before when a new one releases, but I’ve gone back to playing New Leaf because it still feels like Animal Crossing. Sure, being the mayor is different but you still aren’t God in the game. It’s just a gimmick. Plus, all of the animals aren’t one note robots in past entries and had distinct personalities. In New Horizons, one of my villagers only ever talked about Sports and getting fit, that was it…that’s all he had to say

I only ever had the GameCube version. I had a DS lite and a Wii but I never got any of the other animal crossing games. So my only experience of playing animal crossing is the GameCube version and new horizons. So it was a VERY long wait for me to be able to play another animal crossing game. So 7 years wouldn’t be very long to me 😭

This is my first nintendo system and first animal crossing and new horizons was fun but the content feels kinda dull like, i wish $60 could go farther with a few more updates giving us some mechanics. But thats all wishing. Especially since i dont know if I'll buy the new system in a few years to be able to experience the new mechanics they are sure to offer.

I want to totally honest I don’t know how they’re really going to be able to make a different animal crossing game with something that hasn’t been done before us, I feel like we’re just gonna keep having something similar to what we have here on the switch, and just a few updates and added features might be coming. Also, I have no idea what consul they’re going to come out with that tops the switch, it can be handheld it can be consul, it’s got pretty good motion controls, so a Wii switch hybrid isn’t really needed.

I don’t think it will bc they found a formula they can work with. They can simply build off of this game with way more than they did in New Horizons. This game seems like a sandbox for a future animal crossing game. They probably were testing the waters with this game and seeing how it goes, so they can make a better one.

I would love to see nintendo revamp animal crossing into what the 3DS: fantasy life was, a rpg game where you could pick from multiple different types of jobs (cook, tailor, carpenter, angler, etc) and actually have a 10-20hr long story line. Fantasy Life had such a massive replayability that animal crossing lacks. The old formula of animal crossing just doesn't work anymore and NH proved that. We need something new from the franchise

I think we as a gaming community as a whole need to let go of the expectation that it takes a short amount of time to put out a game, for it to also have hundreds of hours of game time without getting boring, for it to release with every piece of content already in the game and for it to also cater towards everyone's needs. That's not how games are nowadays sadly, i wish they did release with everything in it but it's a new business model and it's clearly making a lot of companies more money this way. The biggest thing people forget is that games aren't as simple to develop as they used to be, models were far less detailed with less joints, less limbs etc, the coding in games weren't as complicated as they are now, you've seen how much different the characters in AC behave now compared to gamecube days, the villagers did nothing in gamecube but walk around, and now they're literally running everywhere, they're fishing, catching bugs, interacting with so much more than they used to, a lot of that is down to coding and how much better it's improved since 20 years ago. Development takes time, everyone that has been playing Totk and has been enjoying it can see directly the effect of that extra year of polish that the developers gave to the game, this is why i honestly couldn't care less if it takes another 7 years for the next AC game to come out, as long as it's polished and to the delvelopers expectations, then that's all i can want in the game. I don't want them to rush it and shove out a game that's full of issues and barely playable like a lot of games tend to be, i like how Nintendo polishes their product and makes sure it's in a good condition for their customers to enjoy. I'll keep quoting Miyamoto til i die ~ "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad"

I would prefer Nintendo to release a new Animal Crossing game sooner than later to at least capture some of the new players that got into New Horizons during the the when everyone stayed home. Personally, I'd like the next Animal Crossing game to at least have some sort of Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality connection, but then that would rely on the next Nintendo gaming console to have those features.
