Thanks for the video! I was guilty of making some unwise stress purchases at the beginning of the pandemic. Now that it's getting to be winter, I find myself browsing online stores mostly out of boredom and it needs to stop. One thing I've found to help curb the urge to shop is to deep clean something - my phone case, stove, fridge, etc. It gives me the "I have something new" feeling without actually buying something.

Your point about not necessarily getting rid of everything is so important! If you can box things up and put them elsewhere, you can "shop" from your own things. That is the ultimate in recycling. Many moms use a version of this with kids' toys. They pack up some and rotate them. It's like getting new ones. Sometimes there's even more joy in the return of an old favorite than in something brand new. So, yes, it's a good strategy for the purpose you describe, and it has other applications and benefits as well.

Sooooo Happy to see you, I agree with so much of what you said. My husband and I share a walk in closet, 3 racks have no clothes hung up on my side of the closet.... I love my capsule wardrobe, makes getting dressed so easy, I’ll never go back. Yes to self care, It makes a huge difference, I have learned during pandemic, to chill, do deep breathing, a night time skin care routine really relaxes me before bed....eating plant based, and enjoying preparing meals.. I have turned into someone who doesn’t want to really shop anymore, unless it’s intentional and I need it.. Take care xo

What a treat to see a new video from you, Mel! Buying clothes really is my weakness and yet I find myself drawn to minimal closets again and again. I didn't buy any clothes for a year or so and so many things fell apart on me. Really emptied my closet of cheap clothing. I'm not striving for a crazy low amount. Just a reasonable amount of solid basics for a full wash. I also learned what fabrics and styles that I didn't like. I stopped wearing white, blue jeans and certain kinds of dresses because they personally do not work for me.

QUESTING! Thank you for giving me that word! I was already down that path and starting to just keep a list of things I'd LIKE to or even needed to have so that if I HAPPENED to run into them, I'd be ready, but to NOT spend vast amounts of time searching for something specific. I also found that as soon as I decided 2021 was going to be my no/low buy year, my decluttering journey ground to a halt and morphed into Use What I Have. Interesting and much to think about in 2021! Found your video while looking for pointers for my no/low buy 2021. Thanks!

Hi Mel, I like your last tip Use what you are. I have always easily given up clothes, but also easily bought something new. I had been aware of this for a while and it applies to even more areas. I don't know how it happened, but a while ago the penny dropped. I decided to hang the clothes that were already ready in the donation box back in my closet instead of donating it and buying "something better" in return. For now I am very satisfied, even proud of myself for making this choice.

I appreciate this video. I've been purging but I've also been shopping however, I am more intentional in terms of what I buy so I'm not just buying a shirt because it's cute, especially knowing full well I have nowhere to go. I'm only in the office one day a week so I have plenty of tops to rotate. I have purchased more loungewear as that area of my wardrobe was lacking.

I agree with all of your points and, upon reflection, I don’t think I have purchased any new clothes this year except for 4 new pair of socks. I’m not really into having a lot of clothes, but not being able to easily shop during the pandemic certainly helped. I like the setting for this video. From the mirror’s reflection, I’m guessing it’s the corner of your living room? I remember that corner being problematic for you while you were redecorating. It looks very nice.

You’re always very straight to the point. I really like that about your videos. Regarding decluttering I do have my own anecdote. I got rid of most of my clothes because I didn’t wear them/love them enough I thought. Now I ended up with shops closed, still having to go to work and very small wardrobe that consist of loungewear in 90%. I do miss some of the items and I am actually trying to repurchase them 😅
@VestedInterests4 жыл бұрын
Oh no!! I realize this ship has sailed, but, in the future, I really recommend using a "trial separation" box so you can get a sense for what a smaller wardrobe would feel like without the risk of regretting it soon after. That and decluttering just a little every season. That said, you could look at it as a challenge and give yourself a little time to try to get used to it and have fun with it. Even though you may have a little less than you intended (I imagine you planned to buy different replacements, if the shops were open), you likely made that original decision to part with those things for a good reason. Take some time to remember why you chose to get rid of those things.
@agata.binczak4 жыл бұрын
@@VestedInterests that’s some really good advise! Thank you. I’ll definitely be incorporating “trial separation” box and replace items seasonally instead of all at once. I think those were my biggest mistakes haha 😅 once again thank you for advice and creating such an amazing content!

I had just decluttered and filled my living room full of items ready to donate when the pandemic struck. They sat there on the floor next to my work-at-home "office" area for weeks, and after a while I decided that I could actually keep and use a lot of the things. They didn't "spark joy" but they could be put to use and would reduce the need to replenish supplies. I'm just now feeling ready to declutter again, but I will be choosier about what I'm letting go. I'm also more strict with my spending limits for online clothing purchases. I don't want to return anything, so if it's above a certain price, I don't even consider it. Whereas I used to be willing to pay more because I knew I could return an item if it didn't fit.
@mettainacan78134 жыл бұрын
So happy that you posted! I agree that its worth noting that its not always money and space we are spending but time, I think we can become more demanding on the pieces of wardrobe when they are less in quantity and more intentional and we want them to be "perfect". I think in your case though its justified because you find pieces that work for you such long term and once you do you end up replacing them with the same item once they wear out. Also if you are having fun and not harming anyone its fine. But there is room for people to get a bit OCD in my opinion with minimalism. I would like to aim to be a "relaxed" minimalist.

My motivation is I can’t stand shopping, it’s so boring, buy better quality and support small business, I have a very specific style that I can hardly ever find, and I don’t want to waste my money when I could save it for specific things. I have specific items I wear regularly that makes designing a capsule wardrobe easier thankfully. I have a list currently of 21 items I want very much and have been saving for awhile to afford them, my current wardrobe is hardly ever used and many items are never worn. I’d love to replace majority of them. Always love your videos!

I started a while ago making my own clothes in classes. It’s a great fun hobby and you can tailor it to you and not waste clothes. Now I find all stores charge way too much and I won’t pay those high prices. Also you can buy second hand and alter it if it’s too big or long! 👍🇳🇿

I have been on a low-buy and try to only buy clothing as replacement. I have been going into the office every day through the pandemic, so I have been wearing professional clothing all through 2020. I started 2020 with 19 clothing pieces suitable for work. Everything was fine until I decided I wanted to lose some weight. At the beginning of July I was a size 15/16. I am now a size 10! But I can't go shopping for replacement clothing because of Covid!! My slacks literally fall off without undoing them and my blouses look like I am playing dress up! 😆 I am hoping the situation changes here soon because I need all new (to me) clothing!!
@eggnukes3 жыл бұрын
I've never gone a complete year without buying anything. But I have these cycles - for around 3 years a buy only essential stuff (replacements if something breaks, gets worn out) and then for a few weeks I go crazy and buy A LOT. After the buying phase I do a complete reorganization and declutter stuff that has aged morally (donate everything that is in good condition). I feel like this keeps me happy and I still get that rush from getting new items, but I don't do it too often and actually have years to enjoy the new things I got. I understand that this might not be for everyone, but it works for me. Maybe this strategy (for me it just happens naturally) can help someone that is struggling with not buying things - just have this period once every few years where you allow yourself to replace the things that don't necessarily NEED replacing, but that you simply are tired of.

I have lost a lot of weight and only one pair of jeans fit me (I recently bought them). I have 15 items of clothing so I am actually on the other end and needing to purchase things. I’ve already purchased 2 sweaters (which I have been looking for those colors & on clearance), 1 hoodie, 3 long sleeves, 1 cami & 1 tank top & a jacket I’m putting myself on a no buy until I go through my summer clothing & see if I really need anything...I only bought 2 handbags last year, and 1 pr of shoes, 1 handbag & dress shoes was for my daughter’s wedding.

LOL! I hear you on the showering! Sadly, I have been doing nothing but shopping! In my defense, I used the pandemic-stay-at-home order to clean up my diet and get committed to yoga and fitness. As a result, I was left with a two cardigans and three pullovers that fit me. I needed new everything: bras, underpants, fitness clothes, everyday clothes -- everything! Since the numbers cases are increasing in my city, I am not prepared to shop in-person, yet. online shopping has been hit-or-miss -- mostly miss. I find myself saddled with a 3-4 Poshmark buys that are too large. At this point, I have committed to wearing my fitness clothing (with a nicer top for on-camera meetings) until we are ordered to return to the office. When that happens, I'll deal with it. For now, I have one dress (black) for office or special occasions, seven pullovers/tees (black, red, white, and yellow), two cardigans (black and green) a pencil skirt (black), and a pair of trousers (black) -- which are a potential return. That is a good enough base for an office wardrobe.

That is, pandemic or not, still impressive. My goal was to stay under 10 items. I have to check how many pieces of clothing I actually bought. Love this concept. Can you talk more about if you felt tempted by any websites? What's your work dress culture like pre-pandemic and what do people wear in video calls now?
@VestedInterests4 жыл бұрын
I really haven't browsed online for a while. I did look for some summer clothes online before I realized that I could probably make it a year without shopping, but it wasn't much time and I didn't buy anything. More than being tempted by websites, working from home and not being exposed to what other people are wearing has helped me to realize that I'm more influenced by what I see people wearing in real life than online--which I'm fortunately mostly free from for now! Re: work dress culture: some people wear jeans and tshirts, some people are a little more polished, and the same has mostly held true even on video calls now, though I suspect most are sporting what I think of as the "Zoom mullet": business up top with pajama pants. That's definitely what I do!

Super interesting! This year has been a weird one. I typically do my clothes shopping only at thrift stores, and feel good about picking up a few pieces a couple times a year and age out other ones. With covid, thrift stores have been hit or miss in many ways and the fitting rooms are all closed. There is no way I am buying a random article of clothing I can’t try on or return! So I actually have bought a few pieces new to fill some holes and feel meh-ok about it. I wish I could’ve waited to get them second hand, but who knows when that will be. Have you ever done a no/low buy on other aspects of your life?

It’s true that decluttering is not for everyone, especially those who have not controlled/changed their buying habits. Many people declutter then buy again.... declutter and buy again... It’s more wise to control spending / buying habits before a large scale decluttering for the environment. This is also the reason why I, having started minimalism for less than half a year, have yet to declutter my shoe collection. I don’t wanna throw them away and buy them back at high cost.

3 Jan this year I made the decision to go the whole year without buying clothes. Since I hadn't bought anything for months anyway, it would be an entire year's commitment. I got to October before I felt a pang of wanting to shop, but I got myself through it. It was made easier because of this year and I've been wearing the same 6 or so items all year. It hasn't bothered me at all, probably because I don't go anywhere :) And you are not the only one who has times of needing that shower :) In the new year I will be buying clothes again, but this time it's very intentional. I'll be building a new capsule wardrobe based on my ethics and actual needs. I'll be looking for all natural fibres and ethically/sustainably made items.

I am doing the same thing - no shopping since 01.01.2020. Feels like cheating though - with Covid it has been too easy.

A capsule wardrobe is definately something to work towards but often we are told to have only this much, so we get rid of perfectly good clothing to match the magic number mmmmm.....i have been decluttering for 20 years and each method has its pro,s and con,s,my advice would be look at many different techniques and stop all the magic numbers, we concentrate on the number and miss why we keep buying extra, why we keep making the same mistakes, my other advice is have you got enough and if so, be content, debt and mindless shopping. will cause you alot of mess and problems lv Jacqueline

You should stop using the phrase “a ton”. What does “a ton” mean? you didn’t used to shop “a ton”. You saved “a ton” of money. what does that mean? Please be more articulate.

You exactly know what she means by "a ton". Stop trying to be an obstacle to someone for no reason.
