This is one of the best no buy Video so far, It was very helpful to me, I am 64 and wish I did this when i was younger like yourself, I am a Frugal person, I have ADHD and have done a lot of impulse buying in the past, The urge of want in the past has taken over my life, I once bought a flour mill thinking of milling my own flour, That cost me £200 then give to the charity shop, a total waste of money, I am learning to recognize my needs to wanting something for the sake of, Thank you for posting this video x

This year I tried to do a no buy month. I found myself buying way more than I would have otherwise. I realized I have a problem. I should have taken it farther and stopped all of the things that make me want to shop. I'm going to try again, but next time, no shopping app,s, no KZbin about shopping. Your video is inspiring. My goal is to stop wasting money and save as much as possible.

I started a low buy year in December. I am choosing one item to buy each month. It's teaching me to wait for wants and concentrate more on needs.

I couldn’t agree more on your points regarding mental health and the buying being mental health driven. As I begin this commitment, I am closely following my emotions and journaling them. I am having a lot of aha moments and trying to find new strategies to deal with my issues. It is not always pretty because the moment I feel certain things my instinct would be to scroll and buy something pretty and shiny to distract myself. As cutesy and socially acceptable it is - mindless and excessive shopping is a straight up addiction. So For me replacing shopping with good daily organization to calm myself, balancing my diet and working out, planning, being more productive and offering more of myself to others and learning to use these things instead of shopping as rewards. I am facing myself head on for the first time in my life and There is a level of embarrassment because I am not young, I’m mature and established in my career so feel like I had no excuse to get to this point with this addiction. It’s a real challenge and a working progress but I am committed to seeing it through…

Nice video. Theses videos help me not spend money on stuff I don't need. I do fine that when I'm bored I will start looking at stuff. I'm trying to fill my time keeping myself busy. Having amazon prime is not a good idea so I canceled it. I been trying to cut back on youtube, and no social media. any tips on how to keep yourself be busy and not be bored? Wow 10,000 dollars is awesome.

Wonderful share, ty so much. I have made great strides from the moment I read the original Minimalist book, wow the suggested values inventory and l literally chgd my entire life. But I am still struggling w spending everything I make. I've chgd jobs and have gone from $100k to $40k, and my fixed expenses are half of my income, but I still spend all of it and often more, cutting into my savings. So, I want to implement a no buy 2023 in and effort to live w/I my means and replace my savings.

I def need to do this. I spend too much and then wonder where my money went. Do I need another book I won’t open? No. Do I need another crystal? No. And then I have to buy more furniture for my books, crystals and plants and art supplies. 🤦🏻‍♀️.

10k 😦😦😦😦 in 6 months???? I can't save that much even if I do no buy.... that's like saving 2/3. I pay 1/3 third just for rent and council tax. Then I pay water, electricity which gets more and more expensive, my phone and internet so I can work from home. Even if I would live on oxygen without food I would have to spend more 😅😅😅

How do you deal with purchasing a needed item? Did you budget for it? Within this next month I’m going to have to buy a new moisturizer. The one i bought in january is far too thick and heavy, causing breakouts for my fombo/dry skin, but I have probably 90% of a jar (14oz) left. I coukd use it on my body but the smell isn’t pleasant.
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did budget it for it. How i did that looks different this year in my low buy year (I talk about that in my intro video) than in my no buy. When I budget i always have a miscellaneous category, which can vary each month, but is usually less than $60. I use it for all kinds of unplanned expenses or things that come up infrequently. I used that category to purchase replacements in my no buy year. This year I have a yearly beauty budget. Either way, I use/d budget to make those purchases.

Thank you! Upon review I’ve decided on a low buy year rather than a no buy (replacements for beauty (mascara due to expiration mainly) or skincare, or hygiene, and decided to buy a winter item. I try to keep my miscellanous around $50

How do you handle CHRISTmas and birthdays?
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! If I buy gifts I stick to a strict budget. The last 2 years my family decided not to get gifts but do an experience together instead (for Christmas). Some people I don't buy for and others its an experience. Either way its all budgeted. My family has been working on buying each other less so for things like fathers day we stopped buying gifts all together.

@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari 3 жыл бұрын
I could potentially make a video on this and I'm going go give that some more thought. I try to avoid giving gifts where I can because often it's buying something that that you don't really know if the person will like or need and it's also usually for thr sake of giving a gift. My partner and I don't give gifts for Christmas for birthdays but our gift for birthday's is an experience and that really varies each year. The only exception is Christmas where the "gift" is a box of homemade cookies. It's become a bit of tradition and the only time of year I bake. For Christmas my immediate family has done an experience based gift too. No presents and each essentially pays their way. We did dinner and a comedy club last year and this year because of covid we had dinner and were able to order movie theater treats to our house. Other holidays like mothers day i've made dinners and some of my parents fave recipes have come from that. Bottom line, I try as best as I can to avoid physical gifts, opt for experiences where possible, and "make" gifts like dinners or desserts. If giving a gift I try my best throughout the year to listen for things the person said they wanted or try to feel out a need. This, again, is more of a generalization as things very year to year.

@@ireneroy8820 wow Irene! Thats a lot of family! I'm not sure I can be much help here because who you decide to gift and how much is very personal, especially the family dynamics. I do know some large family's do a secret Santa type thing and put a limit like 50 or 100 per person because like you said getting gifts for 20+ people can be a lot!

@@shawnaripari I will look at the videos that come with the no buy year. Well i need to be tougher on myslf. I also purged also bags that were not nessesary. But i want to cut on those also diamond paintings. I have enough in stock. So i will cut on that too. Just the things we need food essentials for the company. An clothing. But i also had a lot what was too small on me. So i replaced that too. And everything i bought fits like a glove. So But I want to cut it in half and buy absolutely what we need not what i want. And there is also a renovation of the entire house what we want to do. We want to sell it and buy another house. But with this crisis we dont know what the prices will be for the house market. Just trying to plan the future. Can you make a video about that. I know it is a hard topic to talk about. But just maby a a hard no buy year. @@shawnaripari I've noticed a pattern in my shipping. I do really well for a few months then once I buy one thing I go crazy with shipping. ESPECIALLY during black Friday sales and my bday. I'm trying to think of a system that will work for me. This is what I'm thinking : one thing on my bday and a spending limit on black friday. To feel like reaching for a goal I'm saving 25$ a paycheck and putting it aside for some special treats. Getting my hair professionally colored (I've always don't it myself it's okay but never what I was hoping) and when I finish my backstock of shampoo and conditioner (all full size) to sign up for function of beauty. I'm still thinking on it but that's what I have so far

All of these things sound like great ideas! It sounds like you're trying to think of ways to set yourself up for success. Nobuys don't have to look a certain way and you should structure it the way it suits your needs. I was worried too at first because I felt like I was seeing a lot of all or nothing and that wasn't my experience. At the end of the day you have to live with the nobuy, its successes and shortcomings, and you know yourself best! I know you can do it and hopefully this channel can be a support if you need it 😊
