What I learned from becoming a YouTuber for a year

I've been vlogging since 2016, but it wasn't until the very start of 2024 that any of my videos found an (unexpected) audience. Struggling with self-discipline, I challenged myself to keep that momentum going for the whole year with weekly upload deadlines, an effort which increasingly consumed more of my life.
I succeeded, but slowing down now is giving me whiplash. I still have a long list of videos to make, whether you've tuned in for Yugioh guides, Pokemon fashion reviews, video game songs, or my classic vlogs.
I have so many more thoughts than this, but I figured 12 minutes (as the edited version) was long enough. Feel free to ask me anything about content creation in the comments.

Hopefully being on less of a time crunch means I'll be hammering out fewer export-glitches-fueled breakdowns to you. Or at least they'll come at more reasonable hours.

I can definitely relate to feeling dispirited when the videos that perform well aren't the ones I put the most effort into or am most proud of. I think it's been good for me to slow down with youtube this past year, though I don't know if I have it in me to ever fully quit.

Your own year-long KZbin challenge may not have lead where you expected, but at least now you know. You don't have to forever wonder what could have been, if only you'd followed the opportunity. For me, avoiding that regret was the ultimate driving force throughout the year.

Actually, my Plunder deck is an outlier--it's mostly a cookie cutter Adventure build. I made it on a whim with low commitment and low expectations. Due to their summon locks and on-theme discard requirements, I've struggled to find anything playable with them. If I make a Plunder Patroll video, it'd probably be to showcase balanced budget decks with high levels of interaction.

I stumbled across your original Sapphire Surprise video while looking for Crystal Beast content (I think?) and then got recommended your follow-up video at some point and was like "Oh cool, this guy is still at it" before hearing you had been making content for the entire year. I didn't get any of that recommended by the algorithm, even though every time I watch something even remotely connected to climbing, I have to manually block every channel with climbing content to get my feed back to normal. Sorry to hear you struggled so hard with this from a creator's perspective, I understand how that's frustrating. You are incredible entertaining, even though I (as apparently many others) am mostly just here to see what you can make with our favorite winged horse.

I wish I could have been here for the ride of 2024, but I'm hoping for nothing but success and happiness for your 2025 and forward. Thank you for your contributions to this site, and thank you for inspiring me to do my own thing like create content and my own deckbuilding (really thankful for those 2 deckbuilding videos, they're my absolute favorite.) And while these videos don't do much for companionship and loneliness, I would like to think in person we would make great friends. I'm relieved to hear that the quality shows! For the Battle City upgrade guides I'll be putting out soon, I want to end each of them with another feature match like those. Probably not as dramatic... but we may get carried away.

When I saw your video notification, I got kinda scared because I remembered how it went the last time my favorite Yugituber addressed his community, lol. I feel the same about not doing workouts or taking the dogs for a walk. I am a developer and i am always yearning to learn more and be better at my trade but most of the time i just dont feel like it, to be honest, I don't have a magic recipe for that stuff; some days are just better than others. But getting concentrated on doing something different is good. I am currently learning how to ride a motorcycle, heh. I also don't like to play or theorycraft with cards that I don't own. I have a rule that in MD or online, I only play with the cards I own, with some exceptions like Maxx "C" (where the hell am I going to get one at a fair price for a format that i dont play?). I like your videos and your style. It's like I came for the Crystal Beast and stayed for Timmy and his favorite Pokémon. And slowing down with the videos is good. To be honest, I didn't notice you had a video release schedule. From the audience's side, there is a lot of content being produced from a lot of creators, and the algorithm is weird, so it's easy to lose track of some creators. Doing the kind of videos you would like to do for fun is the best way to enjoy yourself, i hope you can rest and i will be waiting your next video , but dont worry you dont have to rush it! best of lucks!!

I really needed the weekly deadlines and the guilt of my previous vlogging years to get these videos out... but maybe now that I'm more confident, I can be one of those people who just gets up and does things. I'm surprised that anyone's watching the Favorite Pokemon shorts! According to the analytics, hardly any views are from subscribers. I don't even know what I'm doing with it. I'll make enough for a compilation someday. Be careful on the motorcycle! Your cards are going to fly everywhere.

The social internet being so unpredictable is especially frustrating for people like content creators and PR specialists who are supposed to be good at this stuff! Like card games, you have influence but the end result can still be decided by luck. It's cool to hear that the Crystal Beasts and I have kept your passion for this game alive. The best thing about them is that they're present in nearly every format, so they'll always be compatible with however you want to play.

It's not that I've lost my love for videography, or even that I regret that year-long challenge--it did end up being way more consuming and defining than I expected, but the point was to get it done no matter the cost. Now, mainly I'm trying to catch my breath, make sense of what's happened to me, and pick up the pieces of what the grind forced out of my life. For example, I haven't been to Untapped in a few months. Surely you'll be popping back in to try out the new Evil Hero support! I'm thinking of making a Hero guide...
@Jeto
@Jeto 27 күн бұрын
@ No matter the cost. I remember when I thought like that. I got so caught up I forgot to live. I imagine you’re going through the same thing atm. That whole thing is great, focus and work, we forget what does, and doesn’t matter. Just like you said, you still end up sleeping: looking at the same ceiling. Moving to America was the best choice I ever made, but to be honest; I still do exactly the same things here, that I did back home. I understand how it feels. The celling isn’t what’s important, it’s the fact you got back there. One terrible day you won’t ever see it again. Or any celling for that matter. Life is for living; Don’t waste it on something that doesn’t matter. (Not that KZbin doesn’t matter, or anything you do doesn’t matter, more over just stating the celling doesn’t. Sleep my friend. That celling is like the ending of a show; a show that always raps back up the way it started, and in someway that’s comforting. Beautiful even. For yu gi oh. I have no desire to play the game anymore. I’ll probably sell all my yu gi oh stuff to whoever won’t rip me off haha. Or just give it all away. I’ll probably keep the common hero’s… maybe. I really don’t know to be honest. My A.D.D meds have definitely changed me In some ways. Opened my eyes in others. Going too untapped to play yu gi oh. It’s just a massive de-rail. I stay up late go to bed late, wake up the next day late. It never feels good. I don’t have the time to dedicate to get better at yu gi oh anymore. So when I play i don’t exactly play well anyway and the ammount of money I save not playing the game is shocking. All to say, the game doesn’t excite me in anyway shape or form. The format isn’t the issue. No format ever was. I just have no desire to play anymore. When I think of the game I no longer feel excited, or a want to play. I feel nothing. I believe I’m done with yu gi oh. It’s sad but it was probably always going to happen. It’s not like I need to go to yu gi oh to hangout with people either. I can organise get togethers and such. I still edit videos; go to the gym, but honestly I spend most of my time. Reading, writing; learning the piano, Drawing; Practising martial arts. It does add up, that once I learned how to read I no longer wanted to play yu gi oh given the stigma. Haha. That, and you know I work for my church. So I have my year planned out. I’m progressing towards my future. Yu gi oh just isn’t in it. I’m grinding my potential everyday. Videos will come out. Heck, imma write a book or two. If you wanna hang out or something! Hit me up! Cheers - Jet

this video has left me with a lot of thoughts. I'm sorry to see the lackluster performance metrics for the things you put the most effort into; your edison vs speed duel video was one of my favorites of yours, and it fucking sucks to see things that you put so much time into not do well. youtube is really cruel in that way, it's why I stopped making video essays a few years ago. it's very tough to make people care about you, so if they're here for the one video they liked, they're not going to click on stuff unrelated to it. I think you're exactly right that you should be prioritizing your own relationships, health, and well-being. the grind to put out videos is all-consuming; I think it's far better to chill and not aim to meet arbitrary metrics at the cost of things that are worthwhile in your life. It's just not sustainable to stick to such a rigid schedule, especially for people that have a real job and do this as a hobby. hope you had a good holiday season, I'll watch the next upload whether it's next week or in 10 months.
@MarkThePage

Some of my friends got into video essays and soon stopped posting, so they seem soul-crushing to me. One of the few genres I haven't dabbled in, though I've been sitting on a couple of scripts (which of course have _nothing_ to do with the rest of my catalogue). I didn't have a holiday season--Christmas flew by in front of the cameras. Even resting for the next week went to scripting, and grinding to stream Duel Links. I don't regret the grueling upload schedule because it was a chosen test of self-discipline--but BOY AM I GLAD IT'S OVER! Congrats on your recent video, by the way! I've been watching your stats as someone who also got pulled into YugiTube recently. I think all your combo videos get more views not just because you fill a gap for crystal beast players but also because the KZbin audience primarily watch long format videos. KZbin became in my observation a place of educational background noise that often does jokes in a minute to minute basis. If you ever want to go back and take this channel seriously again I would recommend to tackle primarily long format videos next time and strictly go for a monthly video upload schedule. Now some compliments, you’re so freaking good at making dry backhanded jokes out of nowhere when you are explaining something and your “why this is important”-explanations are very concise and short. And I love them for it. Btw if you would do video essays about nerd stuff I would watch the shit out them. And if you would do guides for specific strategies/playstyles for other video or tabletop games there’s a chance that I would watch them too because I play or am interested in many different games. Big respect for your decision to only do videos if you feel like it. I don’t want to diminish the point of your video I just wanted to add why I think the statistics acted the way they did and what I think your strengths are.

I'm still taking this channel seriously! Only slowing down. I do have some ideas for video essays which more and more I think I'll act on. One about the Pokemon anime which I can see doing well. One about Henry David Thoreau which surely won't! The concise explanations come from the very different era of early KZbin when shorter videos were better. My videos have been longer now because I have more to say, but still with the same level of editing... Hopefully a full-blown video essay would be less edits-per-second.

Warning this might sound negative though not meant to be. 1) Basic market principles don't really care about our feelings when we are the production or the product. KZbin makes the person the product. Now you can wrap this product in many different things or advertise as many different things but ultimately people who but into it are the ones who use it to whatever end they want and a disconnect between your marketing with customers (audience) is a problem. There is a reason why most people who want to do variety of videos make multiple channels ESPECIALLY in the gaming field. 2) Ofc online interactions are not a substitute for physical ones. Tbh probably because of my adhd but I can't relate since object constancy simply doesn't register correctly with my brain and I am either used to or prefer being alone. It maybe because of lack of quality companionship that is available and I already utilize those. 3) Taking things personally when it comes to stuff like statistics is a rough thing for some people and claiming its a luck thing kind of is a coping mechanism for failures to improve based on my view. Now, I am going to be incredibly honest as a viewer. What I would like to see are not vlogs, tournaments, fashion stuff or anything like these. You have 2 good qualities that I appreciate (doesn't mean you only have, it means those I appreciate because of my individual preferences), these are wits (cracking good jokes) and wits (presenting and creating original ideas regarding yugioh at least). Now I don't know if you will be able to have a following with vlogs, fashion or regarding lgbt stuff since I am not an audience for these things in fact I find them cringe since I can't comprehend obsession about how others view clothing etc and I have no taste for it which I am not ashamed of admitting. However, having both these contents under same channel is essentially a bad idea. Yes I know more channels mean also more work to a degree but still. I simply want you to understand the customer end. Yes everyone wants to make something they enjoy ultimately and make a business out of it but what we want to do and what we have a talent for are not always the same things which is sad but nonetheless true. Now I can't really promise to stick around since the interaction point between you and me is our wanky minds when it comes to deck building in yugioh. I can only appreciate the time we had on that regard even if you didn't enjoy it much in particular apparently.
@MarkThePage
@MarkThePage 27 күн бұрын
Yeah, I do spend a lot of time worrying about how random my catalogue is. Like, every time I post a Yugioh video, what if all the non-Yugioh people will unsubscribe, and vice-versa. In hindsight maybe splitting off into a separate channel would've gone okay--I've made more videos than I intended to at the start of 2024. I'm okay with the route I've taken. Ultimately I wanted to avoid the day when I'm done making Yugioh videos, then that channel would just vanish into the ether like none of that was ever made at all. I'd rather make less progress than someday feel like it's all gone. As for point 3, I have a lot of bad experiences from taking results too personally when luck gets involved. It's vital to take responsibility for bad results in order to improve. But also, blaming oneself for things outside of one's control gets deeply harmful and destructive. The solution I've found is to take _some_ lesson, then attribute the rest to luck before my perfectionism turns obsessive and self-destructive. When I obsess over doing things perfectly, I end up getting nothing done at all.

@@MarkThePage I mean you don't really know that if other channel would go into obscurity since you can cross promote your channels and this is more so about how youtube algorithm works. Lets say I am a new comer i liked your video and went to profile. I see you have non yugioh vids and I am less likely to watch another video as follow up, this turns into a negative because youtube views this as a negative experience since you couldn't retain the viewer and becomes less likely to promote your videos to others In terms of point 3 yeah i understand there is a big aspect of luck however I think you just didn't utilized your full potential with lack of abuse on youtube algorithm fully. You may wanna look into that a little imo. Also thanks for not taking it as a negative comment :D I do understand you are more on the sensitive side as people go which is understandable and i tried to give my constructive criticism as gently as I could and ultimately for your benefit and I am unfortunately a harsh critique most times even though i want to be more encouraging. I guess my mind works by pointing out mistakes to help out solve optimization on things and what I say is ultimately not personal just trying to get a better product out of you as a customer :D

It IS contradictory of me to obsess over analytics, yet be intentionally limiting the appeal of my channel in certain ways. I actually cut from this video a segment about how I avoid things like clickbait which attract less thoughtful viewers or less thoughtful moods, which leads to more negative interaction--but I didn't want that to come off as demeaning toward those who do use those tactics. If it works for them, it works for them. My channel is a different experiment. Though I did NOT expect the overwhelming response in the comments here! I think I've been focusing too much on trying to avoid driving away new viewers, and not enough on acknowledging those who are already here. Even back to retention, that could also get more clicks on other videos. I have so much to think about. (I'm used to that cold style of critiquing, which makes me suspect that you're a fellow writer or actor! That's how we do it. Hammering out quality work in those fields is certainly not for the faint of heart.)

@@MarkThePage Well writer (sort of) I have bachelors in political science so I am familiar with the concept since thats also what we did when my circle and I read the drafts of each others essays. I don’t really have any artistic sense tbh (tho I have been known to occasionally write poems and rap songs that no one else ever saw :D) I suggest eliminating the unwanted viewers post hook (sales term) since hook works on pretty much anyone and getting rid of unwanted viewers afterwards makes more sense to me

if i should give a suggestion : probably you should try to do this as a hobby or side job. i can give 2 example : 1. Milhya (youtuber from Indonesia) he just only upload like once a month. but he really good at editing. His video also around 10 mnts only. His content about playing together with friend. 2. jaden BR (yugituber from brazil) he probably only upload when he have a good video, sometimes monthly, sometimes twice in a month. His content mostly about Hero related deck. But i find his video quite different compared to other. my critique/or what i find interesting about your video : - they way you talk, expressing yourself is really good, and your script and directing are really fun - first time i come to your video because i quite like Branded deck that i found in Master Duel and learning about Crystal Beast (and want to find any other variant). So, if you feel tired from making video twice a month. Probably you should just try to make 1 video / month, with 2- 3 KZbin short that clipped from the main video. (also i remember PirateSoftware mention that, when you upload your video in youtube short : dont check "you want to notify your subs of the upload", its related to youtube short alghorhytm i believe)

Interesting... I look forward to learning some new Evil Hero plays from Jaden BR! A main reason for the weekly upload grind was so I could learn what happens--whether they would get more views and more engagement. It seems they didn't. Though also, I would need to run more experiments to learn whether the drop was because of the frequency or because of the videos being different from my usual content. Then again, I could not possibly put out a new Yugioh guide every week! So I'll slow down and not feel guilty about it.

@MarkThePage yeah thats the most important point : do it with your own pace. You cannot rush or slowdown creativity. Some people really good doing rush cheap video and some people really good making a well cooked video. If we compared with food : snack vs street vendor vs KFC (junk food) vs 5 stars dining restaurant. So in the end, what kind of chef are you? And me as viewer (customer) already know that we have to be patient and wait for food in restaurant.

S:P Colossus turbo! I haven't delved into Ryzeal/Maliss matchups yet, but whatever's good against them, Crystal Beasts are versatile enough that you can probably just toss that in along with whatever you find that searches for it on Yugipedia's tips page!

You jest, but CB Rainbow, Albaz, and Tri-Brigade are all in Duel Links now. We just need Skitt, High Spirits, and Branded cards...

You're gay, and you make really interesting decks. Only one of those matters to me, and I'll give you a hint, it's not your gay.

KZbin's AI reply suggestions for this comment were "That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said about me," and "I'm not sure I follow, but thanks for the feedback!" I agree with both.
