We've been living overseas for the past 40 years. We visit family and friends in the US once a year. Trust me, your not missing anything by not living in the US. So many countries are cleaner, cheaper, nicer and even freeier. I love America and I'm very patriotic, but it's not the only awesome place to live.

@martinhuang1750 Important to note that there isn't one perfect country. We've had the most fun in Japan, Finland, Botswana, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, UAE, and Israel. Our least favorite: Romania (very grumpy people). Also, we've been to all 50 states 🇺🇲 Our favorites are Montana, Alaska, and Hawaii.

I was massively shamed by my immigrant family for 30 years for wanting to move back home or to any other country… Now that my kids are grown and out of the house- the biggest challenge to overcome is the “indoctrination” I received for 30 years. I started distancing myself from friends and family who don’t get it and aren’t supportive (which is most of them lol) - it’s a bit heartbreaking- yet I always feel a lot better when I am abroad- It is time to follow my own path - intuition

I just get curious about where I was born and I think it bristles my parents a bit, not extreme but a bit, but the ironic thing is growing up, they always signaled out that it was the best time of their lives overseas. So the message I got growing up was "nothing else exists in the world except USA" and "the greatest time of our lives was overseas". Crazy.

There's connections to friends, family, small comforts I was used to in Canada, all have been lost of strained since moving abroad. But I went back to Canada recently. Most people aren't doing well. The system is falling apart. So if I have to miss out on garlic dip from my favourite pizza shop or speak to friends online instead of in person, it's totally worth it. I save so much by living abroad I can fly back home business class and stay in a nice hotel if I need.

Fortunately, my father advised me at a young age to leave my home country and make my money overseas. He could see what was coming. My only regret is I waited until the age of 27. I should have moved far earlier but if it wasn't for working in a low-tax jurisdiction or where I was treated best there was no way I could have comfortably semi-retired in my thirties. It is typically super easy to make friends abroad and now I have a good bunch spread across three continents. Best decision of my life by far!

I thought my patriotic American parents would be hurt when I left, but they’ve been very supportive. My siblings are split along political lines. My friends from America have faded away. My biggest financial loss is that the USA has huge tax loopholes for real estate investors. Though it wasn’t my primary business, real estate let me live essentially tax free for my last 15 years in the USA. I get back to the USA 2-3 times per year to visit aging relatives. Once they’re gone, I doubt that I will ever want to visit again. People are nice and helpful and friendly everywhere.

@@ryder8646 keep for 2+ years and u could do the 53 exchange u move the profits from the sale into other real estate. Trumps tax overhaul made it so u can buy real estate in diversion zones it let's you pass on your capital gains.

I am a native Texan and I was living in South Carolina before moving to Germany this last time (l've had a few stints in Germany) before relocating to Switzerland (been here 7 years straight now). Anyway, if you don't think that moving from Germany to Switzerland isn't a major move, then go and watch any of the myriad of videos from German expats in Switzerland. It's a huge life change - different culture, different language, different working conditions, different healthcare system, etc. Some of them can't hack it and end up going back to Germany.

As an ESL teacher, myself, we are probably tied for poorest person in the comments. That's a good point you made about losing contact with family. I was in Italy when I got married. Only one member of my family attended the wedding. Now that I've returned to the US, because of the years apart, there's been a total unwillingness to reconnect; everyone is busy doing their own thing, which I wasn't a part of, so they have no time for me or my nuclear family because we are no weird foreigners to them.

Excellent topic. Agree 100%. Living in the echo chamber as you say just numbs you to the point where you don't even realize that your own thoughts are the product of decades living in an insular culture - no matter if it is in the US or anywhere else. The narratives that you accept living in only one country (for some, even one state or city all their lives) can be overt but also insidiously subtle. Better to break free from the noise and then you can see the person inside that you truly are. It's actually kind of a Zen Buddhist approach.

What did I lose by moving from the American Midwest to Mexico City? Not much, family and friends can keep in touch with me via social media or phone (though I did have to email dialing instructions to some) rather easily. In the end, I only lost being able to go to Culver’s (I do miss that place) and Chicago’s excellent food. But I lost America’s horrible political system, which is a definite plus

My wife and I are professionals in our mid 40s. We are US citizens in Arizona. Wife is an immigrant from Vietnam. I am the son of Indian immigrants. I was born in USA. My parents are doing well in Chicago. When I start talking about moving to Southeast Asia or to Mexico, my father tries to warn me about permanently leaving the USA to no avail... going so far as to call me stupid. He knows i have a mind of my own. My wife's parents in Vietnam have this rose tinted view of the USA, and say she is nuts. They even try to paint Vietnam as a "hell hole", with no luck. They are ready to tar and feather the country they live in. My wife and I are world travelers. The way things are going, by the time we hit 50, we probably are going to be living in Mexico or Southeast Asia...not the USA. My 70 something retired father, ever the prodigal father, will probably come pay me a visit wherever I am. My mother most likely will follow me and do something more permanent in the new country...TBD. My wife's sister may also choose to relocate away from Vietnam and come closer to us...TBD. This all despite them trying to pursuade my wife and I that we are nuts. Perceptions.. I have seen so many people I know in India blinded by the awe of USA that they do not look elsewhere at how much other countries have changed...for the better.

It's amazing how many people are unable to challenge their own thinking. The shaming comes in because people are afraid that you trying something new is a reflection on their inability to do so. I got shamed a lot for simply moving to other states, often for work, but my family felt rejected -- like I didn't want to be around them. People who take this stuff personally are to be pitied. If someone shames you for stepping outside the box, they are the problem, not you. I would not trade the adventurous life I had for anything, including acceptance by other people. It's just not worth curtailing your life because someone else thinks you should.

Can you do a video based on the potential minefields of moving yourself and your business offshore I’ve been fortunate that in my life at an early age I did the same as you, but my experiences are probably not the same or as numerous as yours, having only dealt with the Caymans and the BVI, I think it would be a benefit to yourself and your business if you gave a short list of potential pitfalls of doing it yourself the first time because I can tell you from my experience that just one pitfall would probably be worth the fees that you charge for your services Saving time and frustration in the process. Won't ever happen as it'd be an absolutely pointless video, as, what you're saying highlights an issue that his clientele never have and never will have - an inability to research or an inability to consult experts. If you can't work out where is best, you consult experts. You sure as hell don't just assume and go anywhere. Caymans and BVI whilst being beautiful places are stupidly painful and a basic Google Search has always explained why. There have always been many far better places with less bureaucracy that offer just as many benefits. Caymans, BVI, Switzerland and several other well known "tax havens" are the "name-brands" of the "tax haven" world and just like normal "name-brand" countries, they're painful at best.

Hopefully you will be blessed with good health but as you get older you might really miss the medical care within the U.S. Most of the other developed countries medical systems are good for 80% of the people 80% of the time but for serious illnesses U.S. hospitals can’t be beat. While living in rich countries like Switzerland and the U.K. My doctors were simply unable to reach the level of care that I continue to receive at the University of Pennsylvania health system. My doctors are from the U.S., Germany, Italy, Ukraine, India, and Japan and they all tell me that the U.S. has the most cutting edge medical science and infrastructure. Many of our physicians do the actual research that the rest of the world only catches up on 10 to 20 years later.

@@nomadcapitalist not to my satisfaction. I have been very sick in Switzerland and the U.K. Medical science in the U.S. is generations beyond anywhere else in the word. My European born, naturalized U.S. citizen doctors agree. In the words of my German born, naturalized American doctor, “German medicine is sh@t. They still use fax machines to send outdated medical information before surgeries.” This very same doctor is using AI to formulate a customized stem cell treatment for my spinal cord damage. In Switzerland my doctors told me that they send their rich patients to the U.S. for the most advanced, life saving treatments.

So why are Americans not living longer and are definitely not in better health than in most other countries, if the medical system is so good there?

I will say that I have been treated in hospitals in Switzerland, France, the UK, and the U.S, and the research hospital in the U.S. blow the rest of the other countries away. That is why so many of the doctors left their home countries to practice medicine in the United States.

@@kevinvong6912 no, that's not the reason they left. They left due to the higher salaries. Just like in most other fields. I live in Germany now and the quality of healthcare is very high. But I'm not in your medical situation so just my experience.

All I can say is: don't turn your back on the United States. My experience is that the United States looks out for their own. Talking about family: theres a certain kind of cohesion among Americans that make us united better than family.

Youre killing me with your American perspective, Im not from there BUT im thinking Id like to run a small business there as I think it makes sense to make earnings in a strong currency and the USD is still in the top 3 relative to the rest of the world. Do you really think running a small business there is that troublesome? Im thinking of FL for location and just something that makes enough that not working full time is an issue.....
