Here are some advice 1. Learn to squat, you will thank me when you need to use the washroom, and always remember to bring your own tissues, it could save your days because usually in China we don’t offer tissues in the restroom. And you could easily get tissues from a convenience store and cost around 3 RMB (0.4 USD) 2. If you want to keep in touch with your family or friend, find a VPN before you come to China, if you don’t know which VPN is good don’t hesitate to ask a Chinese international student, they will recommend one for you. 3. You will need to download some apps if you want your journey in China easier, they all have an English user interface. You could copy the Chinese I wrote and put them into the app store. Otherwise, register your wechat account when you are in China, you could use way more emoji. Wechat= WhatsApp 百度地图or 高德地图=google map Alipay=apple pay ( you need to get a bank account and a phone number if you want to know how to get them, check her previous videos) DIDI= Uber Any translate app 饿了么 or 美团外卖(food delivery service) 4. Don’t be bothered if someone staring at you or ask you to take a photo with you, they are not to be mean but curious, there are plenty of Chinese never see black/white people. 5. One serious problem, there is a phrase in Chinese “那个” sounds very close to “N” word but it actually means “that one” so please don’t feel offended, you will hear it as much as you heard “Sorry” in Canada. 6. You don’t have to try those insect foods like scorpion. and I recommend you try Chinese food as much as you can, but it definitely ok if you don’t like them, and there are plenty of western restaurants you can eat at. Besides if you are allergic to something go ask the waiter. 7. In China, we don’t dial 911, and always remember to remember contact information about your country’s embassy 110=police; 120=hospital; 119=fire department 8. China is just a developing country, she is not bad as you heard form media, and not great as you thought, you will see the bright side and dark side in China, I admit there are so many problems, but overall its getting better. 9. Have a nice trip

Prior to Didi becoming popular, I lived near the Shanghai Pudong Airport, and I travelled a lot. Taxi drivers waiting in the taxi stand always refused to take me home because some of them had to wait in line for 2 hours to get a customer. They only wanted to take customers who would travel further into the city. It's gotten so bad that I ended up always flying back into Hongqiao airport instead, so that I had an easier time getting a taxi. The Pudong airport later changed their rule. Drivers who came back within an hour can go directly to the front of the line. They started taking me home after that change. After Didi, I could always book a ride in advance and never had to worry about the short distance.

I know what is wrong with the taxi, most likely because of the shift time. A Chinese taxi runs 24-hours a day, with two drivers take turns. The taxi shift usually occurs in the afternoon around 15 in my city. They are hurrying back to give the taxi to the next driver on shift, otherwise the one will have big problem with them. After all, time is money for taxi-drivers.

You might mistake the old way of meter which is not as good as smartphone app system. When you use smartphone app to take taxi, all route is monitored by the system. You pay app platform instead of pay taxi driver directly which is more accurate than meter system because when you used meter system, if you were not familiar with route, taxi driver might take much longer route and you had to pay much more than you should pay. Smartphone app taxi system is the best way to take taxi, such as in Wechat or Alipay or Didi.

Not having a taxi app probably explains their initial difficulty with finding a cab. Nowadays, most taxi drivers in China get their customers through the app, so when you try to get a taxi from the roadside and see one that's vacant but doesn't stop for you, chances are that someone has booked it online.

While I enjoy your videos, I think you're cleverly capitalising on a market - most China videos (especially from expats living there) focus on the negative. I lived there for five years, and never a first tier city (such as Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, etc.). I had a real love/hate relationship with the place. I commonly say that I can't talk about my time there with anyone who hasn't lived in China, because they just wouldn't understand. There are massive frustrations to overcome, but then you also have the craziest adventures, most memorable moments, and... truly there is never a dull moment. I think someone put it best with "the Chinese make awful strangers, and wonderful friends". Once you are a friend of a Chinese person (generally) then you are family, but if you are a stranger... you'd better watch out, because you're about to be barged out of the way, or screwed out of some money. Anyway, that was my experience (and there ARE exceptions to the rule, before anyone gets upset about that generalisation). Keep up the great vids!
@WheresPoppy5 жыл бұрын
I’m not really sure why so many videos are negative to be honest. If you don’t like China then why live there? I travel there because I find it fascinating and that’s why I’m positive. Obviously there are things I dislike, like the taxi problem haha
@melb41615 жыл бұрын
@@WheresPoppy I meant no disrespect - I'm glad you enjoyed your time there, but I would say from my experiences that's not the majority - like I said love/hate - the 'love' portion (which includes earning power) accounts for why so many stay, but there is a lot of corruption and general BS to deal with when living there (although perhaps it's more outside of first tier cities). That being said, China does offer adventure like no other country as it is truly different to anywhere else. To end on a positive note, if you return you should check out Fujian province - my final two years living there, this was my home and the cities (Quanzhou and Fuzhou) were definitely noteworthy, yet often overlooked. The whole province has a lot of culture.

yes, taxi is losing the market to didi because some taxi drivers are super picky(too far, no; too close, no; rush hour, no; lunch time, no, etc) and, I'm team Hey Tea.

as a local Chinese, I'm so embarrassed by those cab drivers in Kunming which doesn't happen a lot in larger cities, but well it is a large piece of land that is unevenly developed and people like those rippong-off drivers cld be found in many regions. installing didi on prior is a good idea. but yes in general this is a very welcoming nation

didi(uber) has challenged taxi market share alot with better and fair travel experience. Some old taxi drivers are cynical, they couldnot play tricks to locals, be careful of it and just use phone app to order everything in most cities in China.

With the introduction of Private Hire cars the taxi drivers around the world starts to complain. In Beijing we took two taxis and we told the taxi drivers to the main entrance of the Bird Nest Stadium in Chinese and yet the taxi i am on drove us to another entrance.

I think the taxi driver at the beginning didn't use the meter because Didi tracks the distance travelled and calculates the fair automatically, and that's what he was trying to communicate by pointing at his phone.

Hey Poppy, welcome back to China. I am not justifying the behavior of the taxi drivers, but nowadays it is pretty hard to find taxi at the side of the road, even if the taxi seems empty. It is the same situation to the locals. The reason is many people call a cab on Didi or WeChat or Alipay. When an empty taxi passes by, it might have already committed itself to a passenger in a couple of blocks radius. So, the most logically way is to call a cab or designated car on Didi whenever you need a car. When you see a driver who has a smartphone always on and attached to the windshield or dash board, you can be pretty sure he is receiving orders from online services, and most likely they won't answer to the potential passengers at the side of the road, especially at popular area. To make it simple, use Didi or WeChat or Alipay.

Same experience I had in China a few years ago. Many taxi drivers don't want to deal with the big suitcases that some travellers have. Very bad practice.

I was ripped off in Chengdu China for the first night stay. I was not able to book a hotel in advance so we got on a random van which the driver promised us it would be a great 3-start hotel he’s gonna take us to . Turns out it’s a dirty small little hostel room with CNY 388. The second morning staff told us their normal price for one night was just CNY 88. staff really felt bad for us. But I wouldn’t say it’s very bad experience coz in the following 20 days we had great time in that city. We met a lot of great local strangers who were so friendly and helpful. The first night experience maybe was just normal in a lot of places in the world.
