I finished Memory Police a few days ago and your comment on how it would make more sense as a short story is so spot on! I prefered The Professor and the Housekeeper so much more, one of my absolute faves this year. Thanks for the recommendation of After the Silence, it sounds really intriguing! ☺️

I would like to recommend a poetry collection I’m reading right now, which officially launches this week: She by Sharena Lee Satti. I know Sharena from Open Mics in Bradford, and she is really a performance poet, so you have to read the poems aloud to fully appreciate them. She writes about issues like mental health, surviving a traumatic childhood, being a woman and a Muslim, but also the stars, moon and seasons. The poems - even the tough ones - are always empowering and uplifting. It’s published by Verve Press as a compilation of previous collections, and is in chronological order, so you can also see her developing as a poet.

As with The Midnight Fair, two books that I read in the two books in the last few weeks that delighted me, so much so that I bought new copies of them to keep and reread. Firstly, Lightfall: The Girl & the Galdurian, a graphic novel by Tim Probert. I adored the characters and the stunningly beautiful fantasy art. Next, Fangs by Sarah Anderson, a series of comics about a contemporary love story between a werewolf and a vampire in a beautifully bound small edition. I also loved a short YA novel that read more like a middle grade called The Ghost Collector by Allison Mills, which was about how a preadolescent deals with grief. It was a simple, beautiful story and I sobbed at the end. I actually liked a lot of books I read in October, but I'll leave it at that.

ok, only just on the first book but YES to the Sivlia Moreno-Garcia - I had the exact same issue with her first book and thought I was going crazy because everyone else loved it. glad to know that turning her into a no-buy was the right idea

I had the Exact same experience with her first book. Everyone lost their minds but it felt like such standard YA (even though she insists it’s adult) with a cool concept but very average writing. Mexican Gothic I enjoyed more because it’s my niche, but even though her writing has grown she has more growing to do. Don’t think I’ll pick up another book by her

I've heard quite a bit about the Gender Swapped Fairy Tales book so was really interested in your thoughts. You make some great points and it shows the importance of approaching books like that with a questioning mind as, despite their best efforts, bias will always find a way in. However, if it opens a discussion then that's a good thing 😊

In The Knife Drawer, how the mice treat the albino mouse and the implications and effects of that are definitely not left unquestioned in the book. I don't want to say more and spoil it for anyone but it would be interesting to know if reading further made you think differently about the book.

I’m with you on Mexican Gothic. It was right in my wheelhouse and one of my most anticipated book of last year. I bought and started reading it right away when it came out last summer... only to DNF it about a third of the way in.m, for all of the same reasons you mentioned (flat writing, dull characters, no real sense of atmosphere, etc.) After seeing it on so many end-of-year lists, I decided to pick it up again and give it a second chance. I finished it last week, and my first opinion still stands. The book takes a *wild* left turn in the last third that makes it somewhat less boring of a read, but sadly doesn’t compensate for all of its other flaws. Overall a big disappointment.

I am close to finishing the third part of the His Dark Materials series and what shell I say: I am totally flashed. I simply love all the different characters the author brought to life, but I also adore the description of the many different worlds that Pullman lay before us. I am so afraid to leave Lyra, Will and all the Others... Have you read the Prequel as well? And if so, can you recommend it or will I be disappointed?

I liked Mexican Gothic - I was expecting it to be a kind of trashy YA book so it kind of was what I was expecting. I think it will be good for 15 yr olds maybe who want to get into more gothic fiction. I read it quickly so it was a fun read, although the characterisation is pretty flat...by p.200 the plot of Mexican Gothic really ramps up but until then it is pretty slow. Want to read The Beauty now! Not heard of that before. Want to read more Shirley Jackson now too. Only read We Have Always Lived in the Castle and adored that book. How To Wash a Hearts sounds right up my street. Had it on my radar since it came out so you have given me the shove to buy it when I can afford it.

I think that you could do a gender swapped fairy tale series - well a book would be great but it’s just been done. I’d watch those eagerly. I have Summerwater waiting. Ghost Wall was a powerful read and coming from a childhood where father ruled it was powerful. I’d love to read Backlight. I will put it on my TBR. My idea of a great day would be to go and walk round your bookshelves and talk fairy tales, prejudice and more and more with you. I can dream 😊

That's a real shame about the male Rapunzel growing his beard instead of hair. Same with handsome/beautiful. I've heard of this book recently and saw those things, but didn't pick up on them. How did you feel about it aside from that? I was debating getting it to read to my children. I read the first 100 pages of Mexican Gothic yesterday, I've been looking forward to it for ages and I'm really not feeling it so far. You're right about the characters, it's also too much description of surroundings for me. I'm going to persevere and see if it picks up, but it's not what I was expecting.

As I said, a good book is a good book regardless of whether it’s YA or adult. If the dialogue had been more realistic; if the characters had been more developed, it wouldn’t have mattered who the target age group was. My point was that YA tends to be more fast-paced (though of course not always), and therefore those who read more YA may get on with this better than me. I am an author who writes for both adults and children, Donald, I’m not one to dismiss a whole age group.
