Whew those 11 minutes went by so quick! What really stood out to me in your discussion was the talk about expectations. The loudest fandom on twitter is army and that’s not a drag, it’s a fact that bts has one of the largest fandoms right now. There are so many posts that I see daily with thousands of likes/rts about how bts are miles ahead of their peers in terms of politics, cultural awareness, etc. Now, even casual listeners have extremely high standards. It’s a double-edged sword really. Unknowingly, army have built a pedestal so high for the group that when there’s a misstep, it’s a little catastrophic. No one is at fault for that, it’s just a symptom of massive success. A similar dynamic to other huge fandoms like the beyhive and barbs. This could have easily been a dance cover, kind of like what Alyson stoner did with a medley of missy elliot’s songs, and it would have had the same impact to me. I kind of feel cheated out of a potentially dope collab. Hopefully, hobi and Becky g can work together again someday to put out something completely new. I always enjoy hearing your opinions steffy ❤️

I've been following BTS since Boy In Luv, so I'm not sure if I'm a casual listener lol But I agree that it would've been better off with a dance cover + an original collab with Becky, but then Bianca and nem wouldn't have gotten their checks :c

blacknetizen Sorry, I should have worded that better. I didn’t mean that you were a casual listener. I meant that in general, everyone, not just hardcore fans, has high expectations for them. And you’re right, the coin bianca got from this partially alleviated some of my concerns. If she was actually featured in the song/mv, I believe it would’ve killed two birds with one stone. Fixing the erasure issue AND getting her the bag that she deserves.

Loved what you said about how people wouldn't even be listening to BTS' music if BTS were Black. I cringe at the the people who brag about not listening to hip hop/rap until they discovered K-Pop. As if they are morally superior that they're listening to hip-hop/rap, without a Black face on it. The clownery.

This was a very intelligent and well articulated approach to a subject that people just don’t seem to understand. Loved the video and loved the perspective. I agree and I do not think you are thinking too deeply. It was a missed opportunity and too often in this particular industry its too easy to think just because you have paid someone for their contributions or their art then that is enough and that is just simply not the case. I love the idea of donating back to support the youth or something along those lines, that would have been appropriate.

I agree that he could have done so much more to highlight the origins of the song. For example even just having a title screen at the beginning shouting out the original creators of the song would have been really great because I saw so many armys online who didn't even know this was a cover/remake? Like that's a big problem that they didn't know it was originally by black people.

Preach Preach Preach!🗣🗣. Honestly was it really that hard for him to find a young and upcoming black female artist from Harlem? And it really would have been different if he even got a black Latina on the track but that’s not the case. But as you said, these idols artists aren’t as deep and philosophical are their fans portray them to be.

Like.....you can't convince me Azealia Banks's juju was strong enough to stop Harlem from producing any more rap girls. And not being that deep isn't a bad thing! It's just a thing that will be called what it is!! I want this to be more of a "how to do better" thing than a "why this artist is trash"

Completely agree. Also Becky G and her latino fans who love black culture and taking from it without giving any blacks their due props because they feel they are entitled to it because they are also minorites. It's annoying. A black latina fan called out Becky's blaccent and people got her account suspended. They only latinos who sound like that are the ones around blacks the most.

Personally, my heart dropped when I saw the press photo of his hair. It made me uncomfortable. He is such a joy and I love him dearly, but when people you love make mistakes, calm and healthy discussions about why something like this is offensive should be had. Most of our faves have fucked up by now. We should continue discuss what the problem is and hope people learn from it. I personally explained to a friend why it made me upset and she understood by the end of our conversation. One more person learned because she was willing to listen. With that said, while I didn't feel as strongly about all points made, I always enjoy your thoughts. Much love Steffy!!

His hair was the least of the problem in the video. I personally think this style is better then the actual trash imitation dreads that they try to do with other artists. It's just some gelled strands. The whole video was off.

I totally agree with everything you said but I do think it falls under appropriation because he did adapt aspects of a culture that is not his own and did not put the original artists' names in the descriptions. Yes like you said he gave his shout outs and paid the money (because he wanted to use the song) but not everyone that clicks on the video is going to know that it is a remake and that the lyrics are is true life experience because there is nothing in the description that says it's a remake with the original artists names and he didn't use a black artist for anything else as far as I see in the description. I like BTS and J-Hope, I even like the song and the video, just wish there were a better representation and a written mention of the artist he says played such a big part in his career path. I think if the companies are going to use different aspects of other cultures whether it be musically, hair or fashion they need to higher a consultant from that culture so they won't be making the mistakes they have in the past because they are a homogeneous society.

I'm tired of this whole remake cycle that's happening in entertainment in general. I don't understand the need to remake things (especially things of cultural significance to a community you don't even belong to) by inserting yourself in the established canon, instead of just creating something entirely new that was inspired by it. It almost seems like a form of eating the other to me. Like I would have been more interested in a new collab with Becky G. He could have referenced the track absolutely and talked about his dance and they could have repped where they are from without erasing the ones who came before by this honestly unnecessary remake. Also lmao about the gel twists. I was like what are folks talking about? Tf are gel twists? My family didn't know what it was either.

#FACTS on #FACTS on #FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow, great point-- they would not listen to BTS if BTS was black. Ironic how k-pop ocassionally has this mirage of inclusion that still limits black culture even though many aspects of black music/culture are the foundation of k-pop. I digress. I thought the video was cute and the collab is cute but it was a missed opportunity as well to highlight the FOUNDATION! The black woman and man not just as dancers in the background btw. I noticed that both Becky G and Nicki Minaj appear much lighter in the videos respectively. Is Becky G from Harlem? Js.

Soooo... not trying to make excuses for him but, was it not enough that he had so many black dancers in the video from start to finish? When is it ever enough exactly? Just wondering. Bold/Unpopular Opinion: Black women, STOP straitening your hair and wearing weaves!!! Go NATURAL!!! Be PROUD of your beautiful "BLACK HAIR" and stop trying to look like the white female. LOVE YOURSELF and your hair!! Or are you too afraid of loosing that job, or having someone cut off your dreads? Be strong beautiful black women with your own hair. Why do you keep wasting all that money on non-black businesses that sell you their dead hair????? Be Bold and strong women that fight for your rights as a people and do it with your own NATURAL look!! I've been rocking my natural hair for a while. It's very freeing. How many of you are BOLD enough to ROCK your natural looks in 2019??? If not, you're also committing "CA" with the oppressors ideas of what's "Pretty/Beautiful" no? Is it not also CA when you're trying to look like the oppressors? They don't want us with our natural hair, so the sell products that makes us change our looks, so that we don't "offend them" with our dreads/braids/frows while out in the world. But they're free to rock those looks. Am I getting too deep here? Isn't that what's in the news all the time? Someone's hair got cut off because it offended the establishment? But they want you dependent on them and looking like them in the hair dept. and the bleaching. They don't want us to love our beautiful black selves, cuz it's a treat to them somehow. We can do well/great by ourselves without their involvement(black wall street anyone), but that's a hindrance to their pockets. Can't have that. So once again, are any dark/lite skinned black women bold enough to ROCK their natural hair and not spend your money making them richer and yourself poorer? They laugh at us and don't take us seriously, because we were the first ones to commit CA by trying to look like them with the straight hair.

I respect your opinion about wearing your natural hair, but it lacks consideration for history at least in the US. The difference in the situation of black women wearing weaves, wigs, etc., is that it’s assimilation. In order to be successful in the job market, you have to assimilate to the Eurocentric standard. And it’s not just historical, this is still a very real thing in 2019. Just a few months ago, New York passed a law to ban discrimination against natural hairstyles in the workplace. It’s not a simple matter of being afraid, Black people can literally not be able to provide for themselves because of the way they wear their hair. Even so, you also have ignored the highly visible natural hair movement that has been going on for years. I seldom wear weaves or wigs, and I’ve been natural for almost 5 years. None of my friends have relaxers, wear wigs regularly, or have a frontal. Also, black owned beauty supply stores have tried to start up. There was a situation some time ago where two young black women tried to start their own, but were blocked from buying stock by the companies that manufacture them, which are largely asian conglomerates. What jhope and the styling team did, which is an established pattern in their hip hop/“urban” releases, is try to imitate locs. Would I consider that appropriation, not necessarily. But I still believe it was wrong. We’ve never seen this type of hairstyle on the members for other songs like boy with luv, bst, or dna. I’m vocal about it bc I want to see better and know they can do better for the future. Sorry for the long comment lol.

@@moisttowelette9813 That's what I was talking about. It's sad that black women had to "assimilate" (basically copy the european look) in order to "blend in/fit in" to be able to work for the europeans. And I do understand(very aware of) the blockades that we have to go through to stand on our own without their influence/interference to be able to make a living in this country. We can't even get by in entertainment without them pulling the strings(purse and literal), dictating what we do and how it's delivered. Sad state we're in really.

Why is black people (and I'm black )Always doing other people culture but it can't be return. We are not in our parent age where we only do R&B we are in the every music. Black people do pop music, country music now. A couple months ago LiL Nas made a song (a country song ) right away billboard said its not country. Country music people step forward and said welcome to him not you're steal our culture. He's perform in all the country awards. People don't listen to one music anymore. And I have a pet peeve if we black people are so proud of our self why do we let black rapper get away with the N word .In this Trump age kid as young as five being call that word at school .And kpop appreciate black culture .Jhope, Suga, Rm every since they came to America every interview they mention Nas,Tupac,Biggie as there influence. when's the last time you've heard Drake Kanye mention old school rapper so who the most respectful black culture

I’m a little confused by your post. Cause a lot of American music styles like country, blues, rock and roll and other things were originally black music styles as well and black people were entirely displaced from them. So when we enter those areas it’s not without history on our part. As you said black artists like lil Nas were turned away when they tried to break free from tradition black music like rap and r&b. Old town road is still not officially counted as country music. So I don’t see your point

@@AnimeDirectionBabe its not that it's counted as country song but country music fans accepted him. He has perform at all the country music awards shows with standing ovation. No one make a big hupla why he hear ,he's stealing our culture. Only black people with the culture thing .To me long as a white person doesn't say " whites original found this music " I'm okay for you to appreciate (not appropriate our music ) .Nowhere in the definition of appropriation does it say you can't sample from another culture, no it says acknowlege and give credit to the culture. Recently a Asian actress call out a country singer for wearing Asian traditional wedding garment without pants .Her American Fans call it culture appropriation because she wearing it panty showing split on the side. She told her you can wear it but respectfully wear pants with it because this a wedding garment has scared meaning in Asian .

Carolyn Franklin people did tho. People boycotted a Jean company for supporting him because he was “disrespecting country music” it was a whole thing and half of the hype for his song. This is also nothing new this same behavior also happened to other artist like Beyoncé. White country listening Americans still do not accept or respect him. I was happily surprised by the celebrity country artist who came to his defense and rightfully so but they defended him because people attacked him.
