My brother never had much and would work like crazy 10 months out of the year, so he could , travel for 2 months on these grossly elaborate trips to a different country every year with his 8 best friends that also lived the same way to have those unforgettable trips of a life time, but I like your approach better, because you get to enjoy everyday.

Sounds like minimalism was not just a life change in your consumerism habits but also a gateway for self reflection. Correct me if i misunderstood but it seems shopping took a lot of your time, energy, & thought process leaving you emotionally unfulfilled & unhappy. I hope your journey to self discovery continues to be a positive one. =) Subscribed.
@Debbiesdilemmas7 жыл бұрын
TheQUBANQT shopping is a quick fix to a much larger problem usually. It gives you an instant "high" for a short time and then you need to go and shop again. Most people are just getting further in debt and to make themselves feel better they go and shop again just snowballing the bigger issue.

I agree with what you're saying smokeytehlovable, however, I have seen this a lot with some of the minimalist forums. One is not necessarily connected to the other. The problem you give is real, indeed, but becoming a minimalist, many times is trading one addiction for the other.

Of the many resources about minimalism I've seen, this is one is the best so far. It's concise and she does an excellent job of articulating the core principle of minimalism: get rid of the things that aren't making your life better so you can think deeply about and then include the things that will make your life better. It's different for each person and she nailed what it is for herself. Very inspirational. Also, if you watch youtube on your laptop you can watch videos while you get things done, like cleaning, decluttering, organizing and boxing up your excess stuff that is no longer positively contributing to your life. Pass it on to someone whose life it does enhance and you both reap the rewards.

This is one of the most inspiring testimonials of what minimalism can do for someone I've ever heard. I just watched the documentary on "Minimalism" and loved it, wanted to see what others were saying. I hope them make a follow-up movie and should include you. Because in that one, everyone talks about doing it, but no one has as great a testimonial as you do. Everyone is going to do something different with the extra time and money but it's so interesting to learn what they end up doing?

this was such a great video! I used to hike A LOT when I was a kid, mostly with school, and forgot all about it until recently. I've done a couple of hikes last year and this year in the fall and loved it! I am currently making a list of hiking spots I want to go to whenever it's warm again! :) I was "forced" into downsizing when I moved to nyc way back in 2014 and realizing how easy moving around is with very little stuff I found liberating! I too used to spend a lot of time shopping or looking around (online) and have since completely let go of that habit. When I need something, I look around and get it, but I am no longer looking around just for the sake of it. It feels so pointless! I can totally relate to everything you said in the video. All of a sudden there's all this time to do things that really matter: spending heaps of time with family & friends, moving, travelling and just enjoying life :)

Hey Amanda...it really inspires me when you talk about minimalism! I have a long way to go because I still feel like I buy too many things (mainly books but also clothes). I hate buying clothes because I often find I'm settling for things that aren't exactly what I want and then I regret it after! I do generally wear only a handful of things (my favorites) over and over again. When did you become content with what you had? Was it when you decided to stop shopping? Or did it come after you had experienced the benefits of minimalism?
@AmandaRoundtheGlobe8 жыл бұрын
I used to do the same thing with clothes. I am not sure I am ever completely content with what I have because I am constantly moving around (different countries have different "dress codes"), and so I really change up my wardrobe a lot. What really helped me was thinking about exactly what I wanted to buy and then going out to find it, instead of going shopping and looking for something to buy. Also noting what you wear often and like (and what you don't) helps in the shopping process :)
@AmandaRoundtheGlobe8 жыл бұрын
In broader terms, I think a few things helped me be content overall, and that was 1. seeing so many people survive around the world on so little, and 2. after seeing that, realizing that I had everything I needed and more (and could always access anything I needed if I didn't have it). I think gratitude for what you do have plays a MASSIVE role in this as well. I could go on and on haha maybe I should do an entire video about this!

Hi Amanda. I've explored minimalism over the last few months. I haven't implemented yet because I haven't had time. I'm definitely of the mindset though. It all started with cleaning my house takes sooo loong....I've got so much crap. I started with my closet and asked myself "Why do I have this?" and "What if I didn't?" (would I end up wanting to replace it, shopping for a new one?) Anyway, from that, I came up with the idea that I kept a lot of my clothes and other stuff because it's not good enough to sell, but it means enough to me that it should be appreciated by someone. So I started a nonprofit. Working towards opening a thrift store now.....which is why I haven't had time to implement. I gotta get it going and start the fundraising cuz I'm running out of savings, but i don't want to lose momentum by getting a job. Working on creating the website now. Within the next month, you'll be able to look me up on LifeTeaches.org. I hope to run into you one day in this small world. Congrats on building such a wonderful life. I can totally relate to your comment about how surreal it all seems. :-) Happy New Year! Yael

I have my own website, plus I'm pretty active on social media. I write a lot on Facebook and all of the writing jobs I've gotten have actually been people who were looking for writers and found me in the most random ways. Seriously, I got a writing job from posting an ad to sell my bike in Thailand. I know this isn't the most helpful way but I think if you want to write, just start writing and talk to people about how you'd like to be a writer. There are lots of sites that you can find writing jobs on if you do a google search :)

Having a lot of stuff is awful because everything you buy needs space in your home and demands your time for cleaning them taking care of them or they just stay in your wardrobe without any purpose, which may cause messiness etc. So declutter your space you live in, save money and spend them on travelling, hiking, cycling, food etc. All these things will give you great memories, happiness and joy :)

Loved this video! Very inspiring! Did you ever feel scared or lonely doing these big things by yourself? If so, how do you usually handle it?
@AmandaRoundtheGlobe8 жыл бұрын
Karen Sagun of course! I feel lonely often, and scared sometimes. Making friends and being around people when you need to is a lot easier than I had imagined, and making myself be social when I'm feeling lonely really helps. When I feel "scared," it is more of a nervous feeling, like what am I doing?! What helps with that is writing in a journal or talking to a friend. Sometimes it can be difficult to live such an unconventional lifestyle, but the amount of value I gain from my experiences makes it completely worth it, and the alternative (working 9-5 for the rest of my life) is even scarier to me 😝

Hi Amanda. Thank you for your inspiring video. In the past year, I've been slowly getting into minimalism. But now I want to be more serious about it in the next year. I think my problem is I try to sell things that I don't use online. It's been 6 months or more that lots of my things weren't sold. But I feel bad to let them go because I see them as money I can get back. And it felt great when someone bought my stuff. I guess getting money back is one reason, but I was also happy to know that someone wanted it or was going to use it. Dumping stuff to me feels like throwing money in a rubbish bin. Please advise.
@AmandaRoundtheGlobe8 жыл бұрын

Hi Amanda how did you start to get rid of all of your stuff? I have gotten rid of about half of my clothes and shoes but can't seem to let go of the rest for fear I may need it. I have 3 girls and a husband but only apply this to me and my things which include some household areas like the kitchen . I work full time as a nurse in New York. The more I get rid of the better I feel and the less stress but am still having trouble. Any suggestions on where to start or keep going? Thank you Stephanie
@AmandaRoundtheGlobe8 жыл бұрын
Stephanie Lee be patient with yourself!! It took me a long time to get rid of most of my stuff, like a year pretty much. Also watching inspiring documentaries or ted talks (I love the ted talk by the minimalists) helps me. I would look around and ask myself if I get value from something that I'm holding on to, and if I didn't gain happiness from it, it went out!

I feel that certain things like travelling and hiking I would enjoy and feel safer when going with someone else so I generally do not go. With minimalism though, I feel that you can find great adventures in your own area of where you live without needing to get on an airplane and go really far. Maybe I am wrong though considering I don't go very far. Ha! This inspires me to go on some biking adventures this week. Maybe check out some new trails in my town I have never walked or run in.

I wish my family would get on board with living a minimalistic life. I am trying to declutter my home but I can't seem to encourage my husband and son. I completely agree with you that things don't bring you happiness. All they do is drain your bank account and clutter your home. You have more to worry about, more to maintain, more to fix and repair. I just don't want it anymore. There is so much more to life than owning stuff. I'd rather spend my money on experiences and time with friends and family.

I heard about minimalism a lot of times, but until a few days ago I don´t even care to watch videos or investigate a little deeper about it. I did for a couple of days, and I know this is what I need. Can you give me some advice on how to begin, the first steps?. I was giving away some stuff I really don´t need, but may be you have some good advices. Love your video, I´ll to europe in a few day, I´m so happy about that. I want to travel and Take pictures. Thanks, you are an inspiration

Lovely video Amanda. A lot of good points. I'm so pleased you're have fun traveling and feeling energized. What part of Australia are you currently in? Just a wee little tip, you have such a beautiful voice however I found it hard to follow in some spots when you race your words and speak from your throat instead of your diaphragm. Just remember to breathe and let the words flow as you have so much beautiful information and experience to spare. 😘😘😘 xxx

I'm so inspired! My fiancé and I are leaning towards this. Thanks for sharing! What are the first steps Of becoming a minimalist? I'm thinking of starting with all of our clothes in the house and my kids toys that they don't play with.

lindseys lifeNstyle read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. It's not about minimalism necessarily but I feel like it's what got me into the right mindset to make major changes in my life. It took my husband and I a WHILE to get where we feel we don't have excess and we still feel that we have more than we need at this point a year later. But, it's a process. We sold our house and moved cross country into a one bedroom apartment which was very helpful for us to pair down as well :-)

Thank you so much Lindsey! I highly suggest trying out the 40 bags in 40 days challenge if you are thinking about minimalism - it helped me so much in the beginning! Here is the link (I'm not affiliated with them at all, I just love this challenge): www.whitehouseblackshutters.com/40-bags-in-40-days/

Trying so hard to get rid of excess. Each time I go through my things it gets easier. I also want to produce less waste. Most people place value on things instead of experiences and even your relationships with family & friends. I wish my friends and family could see that. Right now I am trying to help my fiancee get rid of excess. It's gotten easier but he has such a hard time getting rid of things he never uses. He has a box of rocks from when he was he doesn't want to get rid of still.....just sitting in a box, on a shelf collecting dust.....I just don't get the need or want for people to keep things like this.
