I can completely understand someone not connecting with Agnes, especially with how it was advertised. I found it a pretty solid examination of trauma, as told through the lens of exorcism, using it as sort of metaphor for other teenage traumatic experience, and how that can change your life going forward. It has a few too many jagged pieces sticking out to come to a cohesive whole, but it's utterly its own thing, which I totally respect. That ending is WAY too abrupt through.

If you are ever in the ballet mood again. I recommend the 1948 film: The Red Shoes. The film is a thriller but at times can get pretty messed up.

Thanks for sharing your list with us, Emma. Always fun to learn which films you thought were good. So, "Die Hard" gets 3 stars... Okay, I am fine with the score, especially when I understand that action is not your genre. However, I do think there is a flaw in "movie criticism" when it comes to Die Hard. Any film critic who says that a film is worth watching "because the acting is so good" is not being fair to Alan Rickman in "Die Hard".

PEN15 Is the greatest, most hilarious, middle-school Nostalgia (& cringe ) inducing series ever created. Eye grew up in the 90s & all of those little details you forgot (or wish you could forget!) about growing up (esp. being a girl) in that time, is on full… awkward display - but in the best way ever. Their friendship is one of - if not the best I’ve ever seen on any series. Ever! So incredibly sad that it’s over. Anyway, Sorry for the novel but also super excited that you mentioned “EVIL” Series - it took forever for me to watch, probably because it was originally on regular cable - so figured it might be… kinda Lame? But it’s shockingly awesome (sorry yes, I need a thesaurus)

The Lost Daughter is an adaptation of an Elena Ferrante novel and it is so good. My favorite book of hers is The Days of Abandonment, which I think has been made into a movie in Italy? Not sure if it has been adapted over here though.

I haven't seen "Don't Look Up," but if you're interested in great satire, check out some of writer/director Armando Ianucci's work such as "The Death of Stalin," "In the Loop," and the TV show, "Veep." Brilliant stuff!

There's a 1986 film version of The Nutcracker with designs by Maurice Sendak that I recommend over all others. It's still Tchaikovsky's score, but more faithful to the original book by ETA Hoffman, and slightly more plot driven (Sendak rejected the project at first because he thought most versions of the ballet were dull). There's some creepy imagery and more adult themes in it. Clara becomes a woman after the battle with the mice, Drosselmeyer becomes jealous of the Nutcracker prince, and much of it plays out more like a nightmare than a dream (even the ending is pretty dark).

I was finally able to see Possession (1981) this year when a site called Metrograph was streaming it in October. I really enjoyed it. However, I know that it was robbed of some of its power due to the fact that it took so long for me to have an opportunity to see it. I feel like if I had been able to go into it blind, with nothing spoiled, it really would have blown my mind. Regardless, it’s still a movie that is very much up my alley and Isabelle Adjani’s performance as a woman barely tethered to the world around her is incredibly affecting.

Would definitely love to see a non-horror 2021 list! As far as horror gems, I watched Silent Night Deadly Night 5 for the first time and I thought it was a bonkers blast of a film. Toys coming to life on Christmas and killing people, and then a totally off the wall twist at the end. Loved it.

Die Hard should be 5 stars. Not only is it the greatest action movie of all time, but it's also the greatest Christmas movie of all time! 😋 Also, every year for Christmas I watch Christmas Vacation and the first two Home Alone films. Have you seen Christmas Vacation? I actually love Home Alone 2 more than the first one. Have you seen the other sequels? Emma, Just watched "Spencer" and it left me wiped. It didn't let up. It was a Horror film of suffocation and it delivered the claustrophobic nature she felt. Did you pick up on the "white cue ball" on her side and the Black Cue Ball" on his side at the billiards game table?
