I watched Skinamarink, and I thought it was an amazing avant-garde horror movie that actually scared the shit out of me at times. At other times, it can be extremely boring, however I do wanna say that I think when it's good, it's a genre defining, artsy, horrifying good. I didn't know it went viral on TikTok, seems weird, but I do think if horror movies went into some of the creativity that Skinamarink did, it would be a revival for that genre.

I was also a big fan of skinamarink. I don’t know if I’ll watch it again but there are scenes from that movie that will be burned into my head, particularly the last scene. I am also a massive fan of analogue horror and I think the movie was a really good showing of what analogue horror is in essence.
@deletedkneecaps

it went viral on tiktok because the younger generation has an appreciation for analogue horror, which this movie definitely falls under.
@davismorgan7955

@@deletedkneecaps I think that’s a reason for it but TikTok has an awful reputation of finding a “scary” movie and blowing it out of proportions. They did that with Incantation which I really liked but it wasn’t the most horrifying thing I had ever seen. I went into skinamarink thinking that it actually wouldn’t be that scary since it was so hyped haha. I was pleasantly surprised when it ended up being the actual scariest movie I had ever seen.
@JT-oc8yt
@JT-oc8yt Жыл бұрын
@@davismorgan7955 @deletedkneecaps5819 I also have to say I think a lot of these tiktok kids have quite literally only grown up in a world where stuff like MCU films and sequels dominate the world of film as well. I think no matter how invested they may be into those worlds they begin to start looking for something different and experimental that feels less contrived than their counterparts. There’s no better way to market to young people than to make a movie that feels like punk rock horror 👍

I’ve yet to see skinamarink in it’s entirety, I don’t know if I ever will, but from the things I’ve seen of it I think it would shake me. I used to have chronic nightmares as a child, frequently involving the devil, demonic forces, etc. and one scene I saw reminded me of a specific dream I had when I was 5-6 years old where the devil told me to get a knife, and gave me 10 seconds to find it or I’d be punished. The fact that scene is so close to what happened in my dream is unsettling to think about.

Honestly feel like while visually all quiet on the western front may be similar to other war films, we rarely see a war film from a losing countries POV and how truly no one survives a war even its “survivors”. Like when has a movie had a soldier kill and then cry w guilt over the man he killed, or a soldier be shot after the war is over by a farmers kid after he took some food. Feel like the film brought a lot of real depressingly horrifying truth to a genre that is usually full of heroism and honor worship (even 1917 despite enjoying that movie does this)

You're not crazy...Babylon is deserving of so much praise! I would love to hear more of your thoughts on the film...seems like you had more to say, but for now, loved what you said! After watching it twice this week, I still can't get the film out of my head and I'm a wee bit shocked at its polarised reviews. Maybe it's too raunchy or the ridiculous scenes with bodily fluids put people off quickly, or the ending was too out there? To me, the ' messiness' that's being said as a criticism of the film, feels refreshing and brave. You can really tell that Chazelle spent 15 years (or so) passionately researching for the film, and having experimental fun with the pacing, cinematography, the emotional swell of the ending etc...because he just had so much to say. All the jam packed montage sequences accompanied by the howling brassy Hurwitz score that's an alternate universe La La Land soundtrack, is just such a thrilling ride! It sure is messy but Hollywood is messy, and like you said, Babylon so bluntly captures the Siren that is Hollywood.

I appreciate your take on Skinamarink. I am the type of person who was terrified of it just for the suspense it managed to create with relatively little. I get why people don’t like it but it was legitimately the most scared I have ever been while seeing a movie and is the only time in my life where I’ve wanted a movie to end because I was so freaked out. That being said, I don’t think I will ever watch it again and I think the discourse and speculation about the plot is what makes it stand out to me rather than the actual film itself.

I started the year with Puss in Boots 2, and what a way to start. Easily one of my favorite Dreamworks movies. Excellent story, excellent animation, everything about it completely lived up to the hype (for me at least). Next, I rewatched Glass Onion. I didn't think it would hold up on rewatch quite as well, but I actually think I liked it better the second time? I really took issue with the pacing the first time through, but knowing what was going on made the pacing feel less odd. Last (for movies at least), I watched The Banshees of Inisherin. I really enjoyed this movie. I kinda took issue with some things that happen towards the end, but the more this film has sat with me, the more I appreciate the movie regardless of those issues. For tv, I watched the first 2 episodes of Poker Face, and the first 3 episodes of The Last of Us. I've really liked Poker Face so far. I like it's take on the murder mystery genre, in that the question is not who did it. Hopefully I can find the time to catch up on it before it ends. Spoilers for episode 3 of The Last of Us ahead I've really enjoyed The Last of Us so far. I've never played the game (nor do I plan to, not my kind of game), but I can still tell how well it adapts the game. The first 2 episodes are both excellent. Episode 3 is easily a 10/10... as a side story. As an episode of the main series, it's not great. It spends far too much time away from the main characters, especially considering that the characters this episode focuses on both die at the end. This episode could've been handled much better as an episode of The Last of Us. That doesn't really matter though. This episode was one of the best gay romances I've ever seen, some perfect representation from the last place I would've expected to get it
@disconsolate3235
@disconsolate3235 Жыл бұрын
The thing with tlou episode 3 is that it's very much an important story thematically. The last of us is a story about love and the different ways and lengths people go for someone they care about. Episode 3 functions as a display of the pure _good_ that love can bring you and bring the people around you. The happy ending here effectively juxtaposes all the bad and Bill, as a foil for Joel, shows him the importance and the joy you can get out of finding someone to protect, and doing so successfully. something that joel is yet to do

But there is some feedback: For me, the showing of the names is too short and often I need to go 30 seconds back in the video, because you got me hyped about the movie, but already forgot the name. There are some things you could do: 1. add chapters in your videos 2. show a little text with the name of the movie in some corner during the discussion. I would really appreciate that. Thanks for your videos!

I agree with the showing of the names part, i usually have to figure out what movie it is through visuals or just go back to where he shows the name.

A couple British social realist film recommendations: Boiling point with Stephen Graham. High intensity one shot. Ken Loach’s I Daniel Blake - a realistic but damning look at the state of Britain. This one is heartbreaking and a must watch

I also watched Amsterdam on a plane, and I feel you. I did not expect it to be that bad-and it’s a shame, because there’s an interesting idea (namely Smedley Butler’s real-life story) squandered on a meandering, unfocused plot that, as you suggest, fails on multiple levels.

Just finished it and I am in the sasame position as you. It's not a masterpiece obviously but it was way better than what I heard. Honestly, I'm starting to think the people have issues with the director (who I don't know very well, never saw anything he did I think) and so they say the movie sucks.

I wasn't aware that it was mostly kids who went to watch Skinamarink in theaters, although it makes sense given it went viral on Tiktok. Still really weird though given that it's supposed to be a horror movie, and yet Tiktok kids went to see it.

For January, I Saw: Mad God (2021) - 6/10 Smile (2022) - 1/10 The Menu (2022) - 6/10 Thoroughbreds (2017) - 4.5/10 The first handful of episodes of Poker Face (2023) - 7/10 Also Rewatched: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) - 7/10 Breathless (1961) - 6/10 Brick (2005) - 5.5/10 Also I'm glad you talked about Tokyo Drifter. It's a pretty cool movie. Suzuki's Branded to Kill I vaguely remember being just OK. There was actually another very similar Yakuza movie that came out the same year as Branded, also starring Joe Shishido called A Colt is My Passport. Both movies even had some extremely similar parts, but I thought Colt was the way better of the two and handled its similar scenes better.
