i love altman sm... the cusk comparison is rlly interesting ill watch my next one through that lens, although i might need to wait until after i watch Short cuts which is the Raymond Carver short story adaptation since i doubt cusk would shine through in that one. but i agree that weirdly the murder/sex will regress the film a lot, its bizarre how by inserting a plot it actually makes it harder to care. he's at his best in loose surreal swirls

@@alsopato curious about that Altman film too! honestly, his filmography is a marvel! i didn’t realize he made M.A.S.H. too !!! funny you say this because i’m actually in a major film slump atm 🫠

One Hour Photo was one of Robin Williams' finest roles, what a fantastic performer. Black Christmas is phenomenal, one of the greatest horror films and one of the only US slasher films that rivals Italian giallo. great cast in that too, Olivia Hussey (Romeo and Juliet), Keir Dullea (2001), Margot Kidder (Lois Lane herself!) and John Saxon (Nightmare On Elm Street, Tenebrae). Last Horror film sounds awesome! I watched Klute not too long back and honestly was pretty disappointing, I thought it was well directed and acted but really missed the suspense and thriller aspects it's aiming for. Chinatown is one of the best films ever, in my rather popular opinion. anyway great video sorry for nerding!
@nathansnook3 ай бұрын
glad we've got another Black Christmas fan! get what you mean about the lackluster thrill elements to Klute. personally, i felt it leaned more slowburn in this regard as not too long ago, i watched The Conversation that also unfolds quite slowly too. i think with the chimey score and the overcast of shadows really created the spindling eeeriness to the film as a whole. and nerd away!!! i feel there are so few book people who chat movies too. and vice versa. always happy to chat books and movies!

@@nathansnook I've been recommended to watch The Conversation a lot - to my discredit I've not as well versed with Coppola as most film fans! I'll definitely check it out because it seems cool. I definitely enjoy slowburns too, but I felt with Klute it felt as if it wasn't meant to be that slow? Pakula directed a far superior (imo!) thriller called The Parallax View which I recommend if you've never seen! and thanks haha, I adore books and movies in equal measure!

saw black christmas when it first came out which shows how far back I go. It influenced a lot of later films and also has the classic line "the calls are coming from inside the house " which has been endlessly repeated and satirized. Think fonda won the oscar for klute and along with barbellala it's one of my favorite of her films. Loved looking for mr goodbar both the book and the film and was an early fan of diane keaton. It's a very pro-feminist film despite the subject matter. Chinatown has been called a "perfect movie" but the thing I remember was it was the last film polanski did before he had to leave the country forever though he still remained very popular in hollywood.⚛

@@FrankOdonnell-ej3hd INCREDIBLE that you got to catch Black Christmas when it first came out! curious to know, what was the audience like? what was the sentiments of the time? as well as for Looking For Mr. Goodbar! you lived in such an incredible time for film, and even now! parts of me wish i could go back in time to capture the mood and sentiment of the times with these theater experiences ✨💛

@@nathansnook didn't know u were such a huge fan of black christmas. Honestly don't recall much about the audience reaction except that people were completely riveted and creeped out at the same time. But the really big horror film that blew people's minds back then was the exorcist and if u watch it now it still stands up pretty well. Back in the late sixties they changed the rules so film makers could show the kind of violent and sexual stuff that used to be verboten. Recall watching bonnie and clyde as a twelve yr old and how people couldn't believe the final awesome scene where they met their bloody end and the movie just STOPPED. Also saw original planet of the apes too the next year. Way ahead of its time. ⚛

Oo i missed your film wrapups! There was def an la stereotype during the 00s of how sleepy/slow/laidback la/ppl in la were compared to fast paced sharper nyers and it was attributed to the sun bleached heat which i loathed bc it def came from a $$$$ place like EXCUSE ME WHO ARE U CALLING LAZY look at the hustling grinding poc 😤 so shopgirl totally comes from that same abhorrent mindset lol ugh the absolute male fantasy that is mirabelle 🙅🏻♀️ i love the ensembles altman wrangles in his films and bc my culture is british upstairs/downstairs my fav is “gosford park” which is much more my type of 00s film. Fun fact ive tried to watch “chinatown” idk how many times and have never been able to finish. Boring! 😅
