Hey friends! Just a couple of things after reading your comments 1. Yes I know Duel is Spielberg’s first film, but I just didn’t enjoy it. I’m not going to lie so that I like all films considered classics. I don’t love every film by ever, by every famous director. We all have classic films that just don’t work for us. I spoke about the VO and why it just wasn’t for me. I hope some of you can respect that, knowing you also may not love a film everyone else does. How boring if we all liked the same thing? Or if we all lied about it so people wouldn’t insult us? 2. I’m mixing up my surrogacy films 🤣 who ever gets to say that 😂. huge thank you to the person who pointed this out. I’m talking about a film I watched the month before. This one was about a couple that goes through the surrogacy process but then the surrogate goes a little mad. Anyway cheers for coming to my ted talk! And thank you so much for being here 🤘🏼

Just to note, an understandable bit of confusion, but the films The Double and Enemy are not based on the same novel, but rather two novels of the same name. Richard Ayoade's The Double is based on the novel of the name by Russian novelist, Fyodor Dostoevsky, while Denis Villeneuve's Enemy is based on Portugese author José Saramago's The Double. That's why the plots are so different from one another (apart from the whole doppleganger thing). Dostoevsky's novel is a classic piece of literature, but Saramago's work is an incredibly unique piece of modern abstract writing. Having read the book before the movie, I was amazed how Enemy told the story essentially as it was in the novel, and yet had this additional layer on top of it. Both these films are great examples on how to adapt a novel.

Interestingly enough, I found out they're making a similar movie to Host called Untitled Horror Movie, where a group of actors attempt to make a movie through Zoom, but they accidentally summon a spirit. Also I was super excited about Walter's documentary, to us Latinos, he was like the positive, spiritual Liberace. He just appeared everywhere on daytime television and I was always enamoured by his clothing. Glad you watched it :)

@@spookyastronauts I only found out because I was trying to remember the name of Host and I typed in Zoom horror movie on Wikipedia and came across it instead. But what's interesting about this film is that the film's actors were apparently responsible themselves for their own makeup, lighting, audio and camera work done while they were shooting the film.

The reason Host couldn’t be an extra 30 minutes is they tried to be realistic as it was filmed on Zoom. With Zoom it only gives you 60 minutes then you gotta pay for more time. So ending near 60 minutes was just right for it.

Woh your diary interface looks just like mine. LOL ....I agree. I hate feeling forced to give a star rating to many movies. And one of my favorite things about working in the entertainment industry, other than the LOADS of shaddy stuff I saw, was how so many people in positions of authority were only there because they knew someone, aka nepotism. Often once they learned I had a film degree they expected me to know everything or they often yelled at me to establish their position because they thought I knew more than them. [INSERT BIG EYE ROLL] lol DUEL (1971) has to be put into context of the time. I'm sure people in 1971 were amazed. I mean it did help put Steven Spielberg on the map. And it has to be one of if not the original Road Rage movie.

House of Leaves is really great. I've got it on my shelf. It takes a while, but some of the pages are sparse, so it's not as bad as it seems at first. Duel works better as a story too. It's just one of Richard Matheson's short stories. Very visceral. Sort of the opposite of House of Leave's moodiness.

You watched a lot of good movies last month. I can't wait to see Unhinged. That looks very intense. I'm going to check out The Rental, eventually. I did not watch many movies in July. It was a busy month for me. Here is what I watched: The Crow Friday The 13th Part 3 Cop Car (2015) Cop Car is about two young boys who are out exploring the area, and they find this seemingly abandoned police car. They decide to take it on a joyride. Soon after, they are hunted down by the local sheriff, who desperately needs his vehicle back. Can't say much without spoiling. I'd recommend this movie, if you are interested. It is a nice, imo, thriller. Kevin Bacon plays the sheriff. Thank you for another awesome video 😎😎😎😎😎

I was in college in 1971, Fresno State, in the apartment alone, flipped on the 10" B&W TV that sat on the kitchen table, which we rarely watched, and happened to catch "Duel" just as it was starting. It was one of those moments we love to have, going into a movie knowing nothing about it and being totally blown away. When I saw it again it was the theatrical version, in color, disappointing, because it was not MY version. Another Fresno movie moment, 71 or 72: again, flipped on the TV, this time catching the wild climax to some B movie set in the California desert, just like "Duel." Didn't get the title. When IMDB came into existence I tried finding out the name using tag words, to no avail. It wasn't until around 2018 that I saw it at my parents' house on Turner Classics (I've never had cable). Even though I had only seen the ending I knew it was the movie, because of the intense actor playing the baddie. The movie is "The Sadist" (1963). Still holds up. The cinematographer was Vilmos Zsigmond!

Interesting what you said about the Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson. I really would love to watch the film just for the content, but am boycotting it because sadly most of the content was stolen from years of research and work by trans activist Tourmaline and turned into this film made by a cis white man. As important as the story is for us to know, Marsha and Tourmaline and trans people deserve so much better so in a way I’m glad that the disingenuous nature of the creation of the film came thru to you while watching it. Cheers Emma, another great video!

Paris is Burning is a better documentary, but the filmmaker there also exploited the subjects of the film. It's disturbing watching watching one of the trans women knowing she was murdered and another trans woman (Dorian) having a dead man stuffed in a suitcase in her closet at the time of filming. The body wasn't discovered until after she died. I think I read how the guy was super abusive toward her, so she took care of him. Lol!

Thanks as always for the monthly recap, Emma. I will admit to being heartbroken that you didn't like "Duel", but we all have our own likes. I will at least make it a point to add "The Invisible Guest" to my movies to see list. Fair warning, I tackled a large amount of horror schlock films in July and my scores will reflect that. It was worth it though for all the laughs: THE SHE-CREATURE (1956) - score 4/10 DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN: ASSIGNMENT TERROR (1970) - score 3/10 BRAHMS: THE BOY II (2020) - score 4/10 RINGS OF FEAR (aka TRAUMA, 1978) - score 5/10 (giallo horror) BRIDE OF THE GORILLA (1951) - score 4/10 BLOODY PIT OF HORROR (1965) - score 4/10 (sometimes, you gotta see a film based on the title alone) THE BEAST OF THE YELLOW NIGHT (1971) - score 3/10 (Filipino horror) THE BEACH HOUSE (2019) - score 5/10 (good acting & cinematography, but story just felt flat) SATAN'S SLAVES (2017) - score 6/10 (great looking film, will like to see the director do more) MAGIC MAGIC (2013) - score 3/10 (the story just didn't work for me, can't fault it for being well-made) 6-HEADED SHARK ATTACK (2018) - score 2/10 (because I had already seen 2-Headed, 3-Headed & 5-Headed Shark Attack)

It's a fairly basic story concept and even though I figured out the plot ahead of time, I was hoping the ending would be a bit better. It left me feelin' sort of sad and not really entertained as I would have hoped. It has it's weird moments, but to me that doesn't carry a whole film per se. Something I really liked recently was the Russian miniseries 'Sparta'. It's the story of a detective with a dark past who's tasked with investigating the apparent suicide of a young teacher who apparently threw herself off the St. Petersburg school she worked in. As he starts investigating he finds out the class she had been teaching to right before her death hide deep dark secrets that seem to connect with an immersive VR game... It does sound a bit derivative, but after the first episode it keeps getting darker and more twisted.

So sad that you didn't like Duel. At its essence, it is a story about the faceless, relentless evil that one cannot escape. It just keeps coming for you. In that way, this film definitely prefigures Jaws. But I get it. Not everyone likes the same films -- "classic" or not. So even though we disagree on this one, I still respect your opinion. I just finished reading House of Leaves for the third time, and that book is all kinds of weird and crazy. Each time I've read it, it's been different from what I remembered. There have been parts I was sure had happened and which I apparently imagined, and then there were parts I'd not remembered at all. It's like if David Lynch wrote a novel.

A few days ago I watched Under the Skin (2013) for the first time... Holy shit! I was told it’s a weird film but that still didn’t prepare me lol. It’s not something I would watch again but for a one-time watch I didn’t mind it.

HOUSE OF LEAVES. Yessssss. God I love it so much. I can definitely see how You Should Have Left feels somewhat inspired by HoL, especially the movie adaptation with the stairs.

@@spookyastronauts Oh no, I totally agree! After I read the novella, I read online that Danielewski had accused YSHL of plagiarism. And I didn't see how at all until the movie had that "bigger on the inside" feeling with the stairs. But that's really it! Otherwise they're really unique.

I'm not particularly smart but I saw from a mile afar the invisible guest "twist", I think its a highly overrated silly movie, but to each his own, and I certainly appreciate your recommendations, even if I sometimes disagree, but I respect your taste and knowledge. Also Ive been meaning to watch Wolfy, seems interesting

I really enjoyed Duel weirdly, but I so didn't want to watch it haha. Like Adam had to force me pretty much! I watched Host a few days ago and it worked soooo well for me because I'm on Zoom most days, either for work or watching movies with friends. Like I was genuinely uncomfortable, and the acting felt so real and relatable, especially as most of the cast were British! I need to catch up on Ju On Origins, I'm only 1.5 episodes in :')

If you can track it down, check out "The Car" (from 1977). It's about a Car, that's basically the Devil. Apparently there was a sequel that came out in 2019. Haven't seen it tho. Love me some 70's nostalgia. Seeing you watched The Duel made me think about The Car. The Duel was a made for TV movie, and Spielberg's directorial debut.

I read so many Horror books in the last months than never before and most of them were good or fantastic, so here are some recommendations if you need any :-D - Mexican Gothic (really really great...and no: this is not just romance, old houses and ghosts ;-)) - The Fisherman (short and inventive...and very very dark) - I´m Thinking of Ending Things (maybe the darkest book I ever read, really!) - The Boatman´s Daughter (magical realism in the Bayous...a grim fairy tale) - The Deep (by Nick Cutter...twisted and very bleak. Think Michael Crichton meets Lovecraft) - The Return (short fun...reminded me of Tales from the Crypt) - The Southern Book Club´s Guide to Slaying Vampires (reminded me of Fright Night but with a clear social commentary) - Hex (one of the weirdest and unique modern takes on witchcraft...needs a little time to get into it, but then it gets dark) - The Elementals (finally read this classic and it´s worth the late hype! The characters are just the best!)

Host was great in the area that I was disappointed in with Paranormal Activity. PA, at the time (I love it now) felt underwhelming like not enough happened. Host had a lot more going on, despite the short run time and small plot.

How can you not enjoy Steven Spielberg’s very first film? He is a very influential filmmaker. What makes his films so great are his many collaborative works with John Williams. On top of that, he has managed to deliver consistent hits. I know this is mainly a horror channel, but I love all sorts of genres. Sorry for my rant.

I really didn’t enjoy Host at all. Not trying to be a Debbie downer - clearly many of you enjoyed it, that’s great! Just didn’t do anything for me. Unsane is fantastic. Really liked the Beach House, too - it’s going to stick with me for a very long time - Dark and The Invisible Guest, as well as the Invisible Man (it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me but it’s definitely a good movie - I thought Elizabeth Moss was fantastic, as usual). The Rental was just ok. A fine-to-pass-some-quarantine-time sorta film. Ju-On was also just ok for me - I’ll have to go watch your full review because I keep hearing how horrifically scary it is but I didn’t feel that way (and I’m not a particularly “hard scare” when it comes to supernatural horror). Haven’t seen all of the others (just started Athlete A) but looking forward to watching quite a few of these! Thanks, Emma. 🙏🏻 💀 🖤
