I used to work in the financial aid office at a community college and I stressed this to all of the students... I would say 75% of them didn't listen/care and it was insanely frustrating for me. My student loans bill was $348 a month but i always paid $500 every month, did that for 5 years. I finally had saved enough to pay off the entire balance last month (05/2019). On top of this I had another $500 month truck loan, which again I saved up enough to pay off the note last month (05/2019). I also paid off about $5500 in credit cards. Paid off bout $21,000 in debt all at once last month. All while growing my savings account. I now have about $42,000 in savings. My goal by the end of the year is to have a balance of at least $50,000, shooting for $60,000 but were half way through the year so well see.

First off, start off with community college. It is way cheaper than university. I also avoided living in dorms. So I did this thing where I have a special envelope. Money goes in but it is never to be taken out until I hit university. I worked part time and saved maybe 50 percent of my income while living with parents. That 50 percent went inside the envelope. I also had Pell Grant, money that does not need to be paid back. They give more than enough to pay for community college and even give money back. So when I cashed them in, I put them in a envelop as well. Anything that wasn't in the envelop is what I was willing to spend. By the time I got to university, I stacked up about $10,000. I still received Pell Grant but it didn't cover for everything in university. Instead I had to pay around $1800 on hand at most for 12 credit hours. You also pay the same if you decide to be part time student because Pell Grant adjust how much they give you based on the number of credit hours you take. So really, it's cheaper to take more classes. I didn't take out a loan from the government. If anything, I graduated with a surplus. This is mostly thanks to financial planning and working part time.
@MisterH19924 жыл бұрын
Taking out student loan should be used as a last resort. If you ended up doing that in the first semester of university then you are doing it wrong. At least last as long without borrowing as much as you can to minimize your debt.

I have so much sympathy for people with a lot of student loan debt. I think it's tragic, really. But, a loan does mean that it needs to be paid back. It's unfortunate that many people don't think about that at the beginning. Or, at the very least, the lenders do not emphasize that enough.

If I go back to college to get my B.S. it will cost about $40,000 books, computer, tuition, coverage residency, bills. In order to actually pass the 1st 2 semesters I wouldn't be able to hold a job so the loan would have to cover all of that. Then if I wanted to go back for my masters it would cost even more and I would be paying it off for the next 30yrs. Is that normal, to have to pay back a student loan for 30years?

I want to choose a country that's cheap and will not leave me in huge amounts of student debt, so I'm leaning towards Eastern European countries for university, however most universities in Europe too cost around 15k usd tuition for the degree that I'm interested in which is medicine. I just need to figure out how I can pay off my debt since I'll be approximately 120k+ debt should I work part time when I'll be in first year? If so which one is the most reliable? When do you typically pay private loans back? Should I get a part time job as a freshman? Can you really get money from survey junkie? Thank you in advance!!
@DebtFreeMillennials4 жыл бұрын
I think you need to ask yourself: how much is tuition/books/living expenses? Do I have enough to cover those things? Then you can look at the amount that was awarded to you and see if you have enough. One thing to note, you do NOT have to accept the full amount that was offered to you. I made this mistake by accepting the entire amount and had a surplus a few semesters. Don't do this! Yes, you should get a part-time job. Even better if you can find something on campus! Survey Junkie is not a good way to get income. It is a good way to build up small gift cards for coffee or Christmas gifts.

The student loan debt is not the only crisis. When you add child support payments on top then problem is worst. With both programs you cannot discharge in bankruptcy. Why is the government imposing this restriction on our future population.
@ChildSupportMadeSimple5 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct. College loan is self imposed but child support is forced upon you. My message is if you have both (mostly men) then start the process to remove yourself from child support.
@ChildSupportMadeSimple5 жыл бұрын
My statement is student loan is self-imposed (by choice). However "child support" and "support of your child" is not the same. Child support is a debt collection agency. 45 CFR 301.1 Child Support Office means the Office of Child Support Enforcement which is the separate organizational unit within the Department with the responsibility for the administration of the program under this title.

I never had student loans so I don't understand how they really work. My daughter has friends in college that have huge student loan debts. These kids have used student loan money to buy cars, go on expensive European vacations, one bought bit coin and lost their butt on it, one used student loan money to buy real estate. How are these kids doing these things? I thought student loans where paid to the school and only used for educational purposes. Please explain how they can do this. Very confused.

If you accept more loans than what you really need, university's can refund the remaining loan amount into a student's personal bank account. It happened to me. For example if tuition is $10,000 but you took out a $15,000 loan, the remaining $5,000 gets refunded directly to the student's bank account. Then that student could be wreckless and spend it on bitcoin, expensive European vacations, etc. The problem is it can be confusing to know exactly how much you need to pay in tuition prior to accepting a loan.

Im literally so confused 😩. Im entering college as a freshman this fall. On my financial aid report, i have $1,750 for subsidized and $1,000 for unsubsidized loans thats are offered. None of then have been applied yet and i have to pay $787 on August 10th of this month but thats too much. What do I do? Im so confused. Do i ask my school if they can add it for me?
@adjandoye12384 жыл бұрын
Hey hon email your financial aid office with your issues. Be honest and don't be ashamed. If the loan money hasn't posted yet in your account and the balance is 787$, then you shouldn't worry about it. once it goes through the balance will be solved. If it has already been posted and you still have to pay that much ask for any other scholarship grants available and/or to be put on a payment plan. Never be scared to ask for money!!

You have to log on to your school account and accept or reject your financial aid. Then it gets applied towards your tuition bill. If you only owe $787, I would only accept $787 of the subsidized loan because the interest doesn't accrue while you're in school. If you have Qs, DM me on Instagram and I can try to help @debtfreemillennials_

@DebtFreeMillennials5 жыл бұрын
I would try to cashflow tuition as much as possible. What bachelor's degree are you studying? Will the job have a salary that can help you pay off debt? I paid off $35k with a $37k salary but it wasn't always fun and took me over two years to pay off. I'd much rather walk away from school with no payments!

@@DebtFreeMillennials the degree im going for is computer animation so there are a number of jobs i can get with that that would allow me to pay off the debt that could be in excess of 60-70K of debt it would just take some time my biggest concern is i guess getting the job after the degree as this can be a scary time for some people. I'd rather have no debt but its looking like the best option for what i want to do involves me incurring a good amount of debt or wasting 4-6 years building myself up on my own to get into a position the degree would help prepare me for
@DebtFreeMillennials5 жыл бұрын
If I were you... I would start looking at companies that you want to work for. Make a list. Then reach out to each company and ask if you can shadow them for a day. Or ask them if you can pick their brain over a cup of coffee. Networking is KEY to getting a job right after graduation. All it takes is just reaching out to people.
@jasonhale7705 жыл бұрын
You should not take out that much debt. Consider taking a extra year or two to work and cashflow the degree. Graduating with $100k in debt with an animation degree that will not guarantee a job right out of college is scary. I would say try not to take out more than half of what you will be making after college. Also, take into account how difficult it will be to get a job in your assessment. Think of it as an investment and don't forget to include all the risks in your analysis.

do you think its a good idea to get a credit card to make your credit score higher? my credit is bad due to my student loans and which credit card would get approved
@DebtFreeMillennials4 жыл бұрын
I do think a credit card helps establish credit, but the best thing you can do to improve your score is make on-time payments on those student loans. I didn't get a CC until I was 26 and my credit score was good because I made payments to my student loans. If you have never applied for a CC before, I suggest applying for one with your local bank first. It's not going to be the best in terms of rewards programs, but you're more likely to get approved. Then after a year, you can switch to a better card, like Chase Freedom/Freedom Unlimited which has no annual fee and a great rewards program.

I borrowed $20,000 federal student loans. In 2006 I defaulted and got a $5000 penalty. Today I've paid back $37,000 and still owe $8,600. Thankfully I never went to graduate school. I'd be in debt for life. Recently I put my $8,600 into a direct loan consolidation on Income Based Repayment. If Biden is able to forgive that $10,000 I'm out. It'll be a tax refund for me. Also, I did get private loans and paid probably around $20,000 for that when it was only about $10,000. I paid $8000 in cash on that one a few years ago to get it out of my hair. Also, I recently paid $8000 in cash to get out of my private student loan. I'm a disabled veteran and lost my ability to speak normally for 20 years due to my disability. I worked as a nighttime security guard making $13 an hour. Thankfully I never got credit card debt.

So you can’t take a student loan out greater than your school costs
@DebtFreeMillennials3 жыл бұрын
In my experience, you can. I frequently received refunds from the student loans I took out which means I was taking out more loans than needed to cover tuition. Student loans can also be used for housing/transportation which could be why your student loan amount is more than tuition.

Back before to student loans were more to great lakes. I found a trick if you paid 2 months. And then stayed a month ahead of what is due. Everything you paid would go to the principle and no interest 👍🤔. Pointless info now though 🙄

Why doesnt the US government forgive the accumulating interest on all existing college loans (both private & govt) and let borrowers just pay off the original principals on their loans? Obviously our govt has done nothing except create some incipid repayment programs that dont eliminate this burden on our graduates who cant find good paying jobs. UNECESSARY FOREIGN AID could B diverted 2 help subsidize colleges & universities with tools 2 effectively teach curriculums emphasizing science, technology, or medicine (not fine or liberal arts, social studies, law, sports). College tuitions and professor salaries need 2B capped. All future college loan interest should also B capped permanently @ 2% with no compounding. We need smart, proactive people - they are the antidote to a stupid government.

Good question. People have been debating this for years. You essentially put an entire generation in debt. A cycle of debts as well. And depending on the person, they may not know how to escape from this trap. Anyone can learn just as much if not more just from regular employment and community colleges are always a thing. A heck of a lot cheaper too.

@DebtFreeMillennials5 жыл бұрын
The lesser of the two evils would be subsidized! That's because subsidized loans do NOT accrue interest while you are in school. Keep in mind, you do NOT have to accept all of the loans you see in your account. What I would do is figure out how much tuition you owe first before accepting anything.
