I'm 57 years old. I grew up in southern California. I started to learn Spanish in 2003 when I was 36 years old. Off and on since then I've studied Spanish and I'm at maybe B1 now. I can understand way more than I can speak. I can watch telenovelas and totally follow and understand. I'm also studying Afrikaans now and it's coming along nicely. My first foreign language was in 1994, when I was around 27, and I taught myself German! I didn't know at the time how much more difficult that language was, but I learned it and enjoyed it. I got to the low intermediate level there too. I 100% agree with you, Nate. Just put in the time and be consistent. Also, enjoy the learning process! I really LIKE studying grammar! Haha. Nate, your story about how you learned Spanish reminds me a lot of how I learned Spanish. I started learning in the beginning of 2017 after I started my first job after graduating high school working in a warehouse where there were a lot of Hispanics that only spoke Spanish, and I didn’t know any Spanish, I thought I need to learn Spanish in order to get by to work with my coworkers and understand them. So I got motivated and I bought a CD and headset for Rosetta Stone and I was always on Rosetta Stone practicing and learning consistently for a good six months on there only on Rosetta Stone, then after the six months, I decided I needed more ways to learn. What I did was I started to practice and speak as much as possible. Any chance I got whether if it was learning the lyrics to a song and singing it out loud, or finding someone in my community that speaks the language and practice with that person, I practiced any chance I got and I went through a lot of embarrassing moments in the process but I didn’t care. I wanted to learn and also fun fact another thing that really pushed me was the fact that when I was a kid, I went through bullying from Hispanic kids in my class or in my grade, because I was Hispanic and didn’t know Spanish. I am a second generation Guatemalan, American of that I feel even more encouraged to learn the language because I wanted to know more about my background and my roots and the family that I never got a chance to get to know because of the language barrier. Today in the present day, I speak very fluently I never gave up, and I never stopped being consistent and putting in the work and like you said in this video, the only way you’re gonna keep learning and keep that consistency is if you find some type of routine that is sustainable a type of routine where you’re always using the language every day what I do personally, is I listen to podcasts, I listen to music in Spanish. I have friends that speak Spanish that I talk to only in Spanish. I also got really inspired by Dustin, Luke, and this channel that I saw on KZbin called bilingual blogs. If us as gringos can do it. Anyone can.

Hi Gabriel have you ever asked your parents why they decides not to teach you spanish? it is very common that as 1st generation we don’t pass down a littlw of the language we know.

The comment about how learning a language can change your life OMG, YES! You can meet people from different parts of the world and to get to know them, you feel safer and more relaxed while you're traveling because you know you'll find a way to communicate with people if you need help, you can look at things from different perspectives because you learn how people from other cultures see the world, there's so much to learn from other people (it's not only interesting but it challenges your own beliefs and your worldview as well). And in general, you're learning so much more when you're learning a language. It's amazing

I'd like to despell age related limiting beliefs.. tengo 31 años y llevo 7 o 8 meses aprendiendo español con constancia.. empecé con el idioma en colegio cuando era mas joven pero nunca llegué a hablar con fluidez... He progresado más este año que nunca y es porque he estudiado todos los días con constancia. I recall seeing a video where polyglots all said that "consistency" is the key to language success. Also, it helps to speak the language you're learning despite one's embarrassment at making mistakes. P.S. Nate, for looks and survival, I really do think you should do a combination of body weight exercises and hit the gym but lift for strength.

para una sola R es algo fuerte pero suave y al usar RR pulsas mas tu lengua, es un poco mas fuerte como recalcando la R y dura como un segundo mas 😅 soy de México así que espero te ayude en algo for a single R is something strong but soft and when uses RR you press it more your tongue, it is a little stronger as if emphasizing the R and it lasts like a second longer, Im from México so i hope it helps you

Example: “Jake and I went to the theatre” can be replaced by “We went to the theatre” If you can use the word “Us”, it’ll be “you and me” Example: “The dentist gave a toothbrush to both jack and me” can be replaced by “The dentist gave a toothbrush to both of us”
