Imo it made more sense to go after the water tribes. Earth nation was too fortified to break, but killing the water tribe ensured they just had to kill the avatar now to win since he won't be able to be reborn. By attacking the air nomads, even IF they killed the already born avatar, he'd be reborn in the water nation now, which mean the process got a whole lot more complicated- since now getting getting rid of the avatar requires getting rid of the earth nation entirely first- Either they kill the water avatar and he's reborn as earth bender, but now the nation will guard him + train him to the end, or they first target and finish off the earth benders BEFORE they get the avatar, hence ending the cycle once they eventually kill the water avatar. Either way its a prety non-sensical decision to go after the existing avatar instead of ending the cycle

I would argue though, that Zhao would not have been promoted and would not be leading the invasion, in fact, I do not think there would have even been an invasion in the north at the same time, if the avatar wasn't known to be traveling there for training.

Yep, I've been thinking of that. I had wondered how it was that Zhao was promoted to such a high rank so suddenly in The Blue Spirit, then I remembered he had captured the Fire Sages in claiming them all as traitors after the gaang went to the Fire Temple, which is probably the main thing that made Ozai promote him (even though it's not explained). However how he somehow came from Captain from the last time Zuko's met him (probably a year or 2 into his banishment) to Commander (so before Aang's thawing) isn't known. We know that Zhao is pretty good at getting what he wants by coaxing the right people's interests (like he did to hire the pirates to kill Zuko) and definitely strikes me as a pretty skillful social climber from the start. I think if Aang didn't show up he might have eventually found another way to become admiral in order to lauch his attack on the Northern Tribe eventually. I've always wondered what the heck Iroh had originally planned to do once the Comet arrived if the Avatar didn't show up. I think he and Zhao would've faced each other eventually. So many possibilities hey, what do you think ?

I do still think that Zhao would have still found the scroll to kill the moon spirit. He would have probably used this information to go up in ranking. I believe this would have been sufficient information to convince Ozai of the invasion, whether he leads the fleets or not, Ozai would had still order the invasion and managed to kill the moon spirit as the mechanist would had still provided the air balloon. So yeah maybe not Zhao, maybe another random general would have killed the moon.

@@valeriasanta1598 Maybe, though I'm not sure that only bringing information to Ozai might suffice to get you promoted. I think you really need to have battled people and bring them as prisoners or at least bring a more concrete proof of the existance of spirits in order to get his "recognition." Ozai isn't the "understanding type" as his brother said, as what he demands is complete hostility towards enemies and complete submission to him. But even more importantly, as much as Zhao seems to want to impress the Fire Lord, he knows the latter and himself ultimately just follow their own interests, so because Zhao wants all the glory for himself, I don't think he was ever planning to reveal important information to someone who might just send someone else to complete the mission and "steal" him the spotlight (which is why he only revealed his plan to Iroh when he's ALREADY begun the siege so that none would steal his idea and the General could tell everyone about it after his success). The fact is, it's so big that everyone in the Fire Nation is probably already aware of this mentality of Ozai's that causes rivalry in his own army and just deal with it. It's the same reason Zuko didn't want to reveal he's found the Avatar to anyone in the first place, despite how messed up it is already.

Without its invention, the Northern Water Tribe would still remain a fortress and impenetrable to outside forces. Remember Aang never met the two siblings(Sokka&Katara) or bonded long enough to be friends with them hence this means Sokka never assisted in fixing the small issue that prevented the prototype air balloon to assume flight. Without Sokka being present, the hot air balloon would've never been a success and in addition would also have never landed in the Fire Nation's hands hence no air power/superiority and hence no victory in the Northern Water Tribe.

Moon Spirit is slain, Yue takes its place, La wipes out the Fire Nation Fleet, Sokka & Katara reunite as Iroh releases her at the North Pole as Zuko is assumed dead. Katara becomes a Waterbending Master under Paku. Season 2 - Katara & Sokka start their journey in search of the real Avatar as Katara doesn’t believe she is. Azula chases after Katara. Everything occurs the same excluding Omashu, possibly meeting Toph as Sokka wanted to see the Earth Rumble, journey to Ba Sing Sei, the Drill Breaks through. The Dai Li fortify the inner Wall and leave the outer wall and lowerclass to the Fire Nation. Azula infiltrates as a Kyoshi Warrior & conquers the inner Wall. Sokka & Katara escape in preparation for the Invasion. Season 3 - Sozin Comet arrives, The White Lotus regains Ba Sing Sei, Zuko faces Ozai after rejoining his Uncle. Katara faces Azula. Sokka, Suki & Toph take down the Air Fleet. Zuko redirects Lightning killing Ozai. Katara freezes and chains Azula. Zuko becomes FireLord. The War Ends! Season 4 - Aang returns to a World just recovering from the end of the 100 Year War & wonders around on Appa adventuring & catching up on everything he’s missed.
